W.C. Fields Comedy Collection (The Bank Dick / My Little Chickadee / You Can't Cheat an Honest Man / It's a Gift / International House)W.C. Fields Comedy Collection (The Bank Dick / My Little Chickadee / You Can't Cheat an Honest Man / It's a Gift / International House)
Buy new: $44.99 / Used from: $41.97
I hate to put box sets on here, but you can't find these classics apart from this set. Fields' films are still great even today; this set contains two of his all-time best in "It's a Gift" and "The Bank Dick." He likes a stiff drink and dislikes children. What's not to like?
Airplane! (Don't Call Me Shirley! Edition)Airplane! (Don't Call Me Shirley! Edition)
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $3.26
All parodies post-1980 want to be Airplane! There's only one, and the sequel is merely a re-make without the guidance of the Zuckers and Jim Abrahams. If this film doesn't make you laugh, then you might not have a sense of humor.
Duck Soup [Chico Marx and Zeppo Marx]Duck Soup [Chico Marx and Zeppo Marx]
Buy used from: $19.99
Another fantastic comedy from the 1930s, the Marx Brothers are at their best in this ridiculous farce. I plan on moving to Freedonia in the near future myself.
Monty Python's Life of Brian (Criterion Collection Spine #61)Monty Python's Life of Brian (Criterion Collection Spine #61)
Buy new: $28.49 / Used from: $6.90
Fans can quibble, but I like this one better than "Monty Python and the Holy Grail." Both are great fun, however, and show off the peculiar brand of humor of the Pythons.
Strange BrewStrange Brew
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $2.19
Being a big fan of SCTV, I have a soft spot for this one. Dave Thomas and Rick Morranis bring their creations Doug and Bob McKenzie to the big screen in one of the most alcohol-fueled films since the days of W.C. Fields.
CaddyshackCaddyshack
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.11
Simply a classic, bringing together many great comedians in one film. Bill Murray steals the show here, though.
The Jerk (26th Anniversary Edition)The Jerk (26th Anniversary Edition)
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $4.73
I'm not sure if anyone - even Steve Martin - could get away with this movie today. Good thing he got away with it in 1979! A great classic comedy that I can watch over and over again.
W.C. Fields: 6 Short Films (Criterion Collection Spine #79)W.C. Fields: 6 Short Films (Criterion Collection Spine #79)
Buy new: $24.49 / Used from: $13.50
A collection of Fields' short subjects, this is an excellent collection. My favorite is "The Fatal Glass of Beer," which is so surreal it probably plays better now than it did back when it was originally released in the early 1930s.
What About Bob?What About Bob?
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $2.61
I could have gone with "Groundhog Day," but I never hear anyone else mention this one. Murray is a disturbed man who latches on to Richard Dreyfuss and family when Dreyfuss becomes Murray's shrink. It's very funny stuff.
Blazing Saddles (30th Anniversary Special Edition)Blazing Saddles (30th Anniversary Special Edition)
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $1.93
My favorite Mel Brooks' film, this is another that probably couldn't be made today. I always wondered how they came up with the non-ending ending, though.
SpaceballsSpaceballs
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $0.99
This is another sentimental, but funny, favorite. It doesn't hold up as well as "Blazing Saddles," but does effectively parody "Star Wars" and space operas in general.
Kentucky Fried MovieKentucky Fried Movie
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $2.20
This is where the Zucker brothers and Jim Abrahams honed their skills before they hit the big-time with "Airplane!" Some of the movie seem over the top now, but the commercial parodies are still very funny.
Horse FeathersHorse Feathers
Buy used from: $18.80
Another Marx Brothers classic, this time they destroy the world of higher education, with very funny results.
