![]() | Full Moon by Brandy
Buy new: $7.98 / Used from: $1.98 A true classic album, which unfortunately did not receive the promo it deserved because Brandy was pregnant at the time. Brandy's voice had matured considerably, as had her material. She shines especially on the ballads.

![]() | Come Away with Me by Norah Jones
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.98 A Grammy-award winning debut, preceded by some excellent singles such as Don't Know Why and the title track. This album never interested me as a whole, to be honest. I found it a little same-y, but the tracks individually are quite good.
![]() | A New Day Has Come by Celine Dion
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.47 A solid album, and the singles from it were everywhere. It's more of what we'd expect from Celine although there is absolutely nothing groundbreaking here.
![]() | Ashanti by Ashanti
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $0.99 An underrated debut. Ashanti sounds best on darker material, such as Scared or Rescue, and many of the songs showcase her songwriting skills. However, the majority of the public could not get past her vocal limitations, albeit Ashanti generally knows how to stay within her limits.
![]() | Southern Hummingbird by Tweet
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $2.75 Another classic album, which ended up being overshadowed by Ashanti's debut which came out the same day. This is a deep album and quite dark, which is not what people expected after Tweet's more upbeat singles. It was likely this inaccurate representation which caused the album to go largely underrated.
![]() | Heart to Yours by Michelle Williams
Buy used from: $0.01 The first solo debut from a member of Destiny's Child. I haven't listened to much of it, to be honest, as I don't like Gospel music. However, from what I have heard, it sounds like a solid album which plays to Michelle's strengths.
![]() | Be Not Nobody by Vanessa Carlton
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $0.03 2002 was toward the end of the bubblegum pop trend, and ushered in the "anti-Britneys", including Vanessa Carlton. While her voice may be something of an acquired taste, Vanessa's debut shows real talent both for playing the piano and as a songwriter. It's not her best material anymore, but it is an excellent debut.
![]() | Let Go by Avril Lavigne
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $0.13 The most famous of the anti-Britney trend, and also the most underrated. This album stirred up some debate over how to classify Avril (ie. punk or bubblegum). However, when it comes down to the music itself, it's an enjoyable debut with several excellent songs.
![]() | Twisted Angel by LeAnn Rimes
Buy new: $7.98 / Used from: $0.01 The only LeAnn Rimes album I have ever listened to. This was her attempt at a more pop and less country album, and it worked incredibly. LeAnn has a stunning voice, and the material here certainly shows that off.
![]() | All Eyez on Me by Monica
Buy used from: $29.99 The Japan-only release of Monica's third album, containing much of the same material as the worldwide release the following year. Personally, I would have liked some of the tracks available here (Just Another Girl, What My Heart Says). It's too bad this album was pirated before it was properly released, it was quite good.
![]() | Simply Deep by Kelly Rowland
Buy used from: $0.01 The second member of Destiny's Child to release a solo album, although I still fail to see what makes it "alternative". Kelly's albums are always underrated, which means some of the stunning material here went ignored. Some of her best work are the songs written by Solange, so I'd be interested to see them work together again.
![]() | Stripped by Christina Aguilera
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $1.64 The unnecessarily controversial sophomore album in which Christina attempted to shed her bubblegum image, although arguably she was never as "innocent" as some of her fellow stars (look at some of the lyrics to her debut). This album has quite a bit of Christina's best material, although it could do with one or two songs being removed.
![]() | Justified by Justin Timberlake
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $0.75 An average debut from the N'Sync frontman. The first two singles were excellent, but not much of the rest of the album lived up to it. There is very little here which is really bad, but there is unfortunately also very little that is great too.
![]() | 3D by TLC
Buy used from: $0.01 An excellent album by TLC, although it came under the shadow of Lisa Lopes's death. It doesn't live up to some of their earlier work, but it remains a solid addition to a fan's collection.
![]() | More than a Woman by Toni Braxton
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.70 One of the most underrated albums of the year. Although it does not come close to touching Toni's earlier work (especially Secrets), this is by no means a bad album. Many saw it as an attempt to appeal to the younger audiences, which may be true, but the majority of the material remains strong nonetheless.
![]() | Slicker Than Your Average by Craig David
Buy new: $18.98 / Used from: $0.09 Another rather underrated album, falling under the shadow of his excellent debut. It isn't quite as solid an album, but highlights such as Rise and Fall or What's Changed at least serve to remind us how good Craig can be. This is another album that has nothing particularly bad, but merely suffers from comparisons to earlier work.
![]() | Charmbracelet by Mariah Carey
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $1.83 Mariah's first post-breakdown album, and the follow-up to the failure of Glitter. This album has some excellent songs, such as I Only Wanted and the stunning Bringing On the Heartbreak. However, much of the material also suggested that her voice was deteriorating, and lacked the lyrical quality of earlier albums.
![]() | Just Whitney by Whitney Houston
Buy used from: $0.69 As with Mariah, this was the first Whitney album to suggest that her voice had lost its power. While ballads like Tell Me No and Try It On My Own were good, they could not make up for weak attempts at addressing the public (Watchulookinat). Whitney is capable of so much more.
![]() | I Care 4 U by Aaliyah
Buy used from: $4.92 An excellent compilation of Aaliyah's singles and some unreleased bonuses. This is one of the few compilations that really seemed like effort had been put in to make a coherent album, rather than putting songs in chronological order. This flows just as nicely as a new studio album.
![]() | 200 km/h in the Wrong Lane by t.A.T.u.
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $0.75 The controversial debut of Russian duo Tatu, which, in spite of all the personal criticism, remains an excellent pop album. The lyrics are quite deep, which shows that it is possible to make a good pop album without sacrificing meaningful lyrics.
![]() | Voyage to India by India.Arie
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $2.66 The extremely underrated sophomore album by India Arie. Ironically, it attempted to be more radio-friendly and ended up failing to immediately grab attention the way her debut did. It's a definite grower, and deserves a fair chance.
![]() | All I Have by Amerie
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.59 Another extremely underrated debut, which starts out sounding a little same-y but grows quickly. Amerie has a beautiful voice that suits this kind of material well.
