Predator (Widescreen Collector's Edition)Predator (Widescreen Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $2.49
(B+) It's not quite on the level of "Aliens" or "The Terminator" and has a few pacing problems, but this is still a classic bit of 80s sci-fi/action/horror.
PumpkinheadPumpkinhead
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $3.32
(B-) Entertaining, if not altogether remarkable monster flick from fx genius Winston. Henriksen is typically good, and the monster is impressive, though it's too alien-like to quite fit the film.
The SkullThe Skull
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $5.50
(B) One of the better non-anthology Amicus pics I've seen. It's effectively low-key and with a more intriguing plot than most of these films. Also, Cushing is great in the lead, as always.
AliceAlice
Buy new: $25.49 / Used from: $17.25
(A-) Czech-made "Alice in Wonderland" from Jan Svankmajer. A truly surreal, unsettling mixture of live action and stop-motion animation. It's overstayed its welcome by the end, but the astounding visuals are impossible to deny. A remarkable film.
The Sender [VHS]The Sender [VHS]
Buy used from: $1.38
(B) Largely forgotten and underrated telekinesis-oriented horror flick from the early 80s. The plot isn't always coherent, but the terrific, surreal set-pieces are always intriguing.
Dead CalmDead Calm
Buy used from: $2.20
(B) A solid, small-cast thriller with effective, slightly over-the-top performances. It gets a bit too goofy by the end, but it works as a whole.
Phase IV [VHS]Phase IV [VHS]
Buy used from: $2.95
(B+) Severely underrated sci-fi horror flick about ants taking over the world. It's surprisingly serious-minded, and the documentary-type footage of the ants is remarkable, as are the visuals in general. Those looking for easy thrills will be bored, but those with a taste for moody, vaguely intellectual horror should like it.
I, MadmanI, Madman
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $3.90
(B-) Cheesy but fun horror flick comes off as a mix of "Nightmare on Elm Street" and "Phantom of the Opera" with a lot of noir stylings. It's nothing special, but is quite different from typical movie of the era.
PiranhaPiranha
Buy used from: $9.97
(B) A very entertaining horror flick/parody. It's fairly witty and enjoyably straight-faced.
The HearseThe Hearse
Buy used from: $11.95
(C) Completely run-of-the-mill and rather tepid horror flick, though horror junkies like myself will probably find it at least watchable.
Horror of DraculaHorror of Dracula
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $3.58
This is a place-holder for "The Man Who Could Cheat Death" (B-) Talky early Hammer horror film. Enjoyable in the way that they always are.
FaustFaust
Buy used from: $59.91
(B) Another crazy Svankmajer film, this time with puppetry added on top of the animation and live action. It's too diffuse and meandering to match "Alice", but it's still a rather unique experience with some stunning moments.
The SignalThe Signal
Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $1.94
(A-) Sometimes hyped, sometimes maligned horror flick proves to be one of the best in recent memory. The three directors combine visceral horror, psychological horror and black comedy adroitly, making each element work. The stlyistic transitions can be awkward, but it works very well as a whole, especially the genuinely creepy first third.
Funny Games (2008)Funny Games (2008)
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $2.40
(B+) Virtually identical to the original, but the acting and production values are improved substantially, making the original obsolete. I have no patience for Haneke's ludicrous, heavyhanded message, but it's very intriguing formally by how it manipulates and warps thriller conventions.
The Lair of the White WormThe Lair of the White Worm
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $4.47
(C) Self-consciously campy horror flick from Ken Russell. It's watchable, but it doesn't seem to do anything in particular: it's too campy to work as a horror flick, but it's not really funny. Also, Russell sure does lay on the phallic symbols. Oh Ken, you scamp!
GothicGothic
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $2.20
(B-) More drug-fueled incoherence from Ken Russell. The visuals are great, but thinking back on it a few days later I can't remember a damn thing that actually happened. I remember being interested at the time, though, so it's worth a watch for horror fans.
Visiting HoursVisiting Hours
Buy used from: $24.97
(B-) Ironside makes a great killer in this tense thriller/slasher. Would rate higher were it not for Lee Grant as the "strong" feminist protagonist who spends the whole movie shrieking, whining and sniveling like Veronica Cartwright in "Alien". Even with this worthless protagonist it's above average for the genre.
Back to the Future - The Complete Trilogy (Full Screen Edition)Back to the Future - The Complete Trilogy (Full Screen Edition)
Buy new: $29.49 / Used from: $12.78
(A- for the original) I probably wouldn't love this movie the way I do were it not for nostalgia, but it is still, by all rational standards, a million times better than just about any mainstream blockbuster pics coming out now.
NomadsNomads
Buy used from: $8.94
(B-) Strange, forgotten 80s thriller/horror flick about an anthropologist pursued by malevolent nomad spirits who appear as a street gang The execution is middling, but the premise is so intriguing and novel that it's worth a watch.
Road GamesRoad Games
Buy used from: $39.88
(B-) Self-consciously and legitimately Hitchcockian thriller from Franklin, who would make Psycho II. It's too slow and meandering, but it has stronger characters than most thrillers, and it delivers pretty well in the end.
Night of the CometNight of the Comet
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $5.94
(C+) Okay mid-80s flick that plays like a mix of "Omega Man" and "Dawn of the Dead" w/o the gore and w/two valley girls as the leads. It's passable, though it presages the unforunate kiddie-horror trend that would dominate the late 80s.
Icons of Adventure Collection (The Pirates of Blood River / The Devil-Ship Pirates / The Stranglers of Bombay / The Terror of the Tongs)Icons of Adventure Collection (The Pirates of Blood River / The Devil-Ship Pirates / The Stranglers of Bombay / The Terror of the Tongs)
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $19.95
(B for Stranglers, C for Tongs) Two early Hammer pics about murderous secret societies in foreign lands. "Stranglers of Bombay" is quite good, very bleak and gruesome for a Hammer film. "Terror of the Tongs" is an inferior take. It lacks atmosphere and the Whites playing Asians, while not offensive to me, are unpleasant and distracting.
Zatoichi the Blind Swordsman, Vol. 10 - Zatoichi's RevengeZatoichi the Blind Swordsman, Vol. 10 - Zatoichi's Revenge
Buy new: $10.49
(B) If you've watched the first 9 Zatoichi films, I can't think of any reason why you wouldn't want to watch the 10th.
Who Saw Her Die?Who Saw Her Die?
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $8.10
(B-) This giallo has particularly good visuals and a cool, though repetitious, score from Morricone and a relatively likable protaonist, but the story is overly meandering and inexplicable even by the genre's standard.
VampyresVampyres
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $8.72
(C+) Another famed lesbian vampire movie. Much better than the tedious, pretentious "Daughters of Darkness", but it's nothing to get to worked up about.
One Dark NightOne Dark Night
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $8.86
(C-) Kiddie-oriented horror movie deserves credit for actually trying to be scary, even if it doesn't much work. The climax is fairly entertaining, though it's quite dull before then, and rather cheap and poorly put together.
House on Sorority RowHouse on Sorority Row
Buy used from: $27.85
(C+) Completely generic early slasher, apart from the atypically appealing protagonist. It passes the time.
Fatal Attraction (Special Collector's Edition)Fatal Attraction (Special Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $2.17
(B-) Starts out as a solid psychological thriller, though the move towards a slasher style climax doesn't work. On the downside, it allowed critics to indulge in tedious, hypocritical feminist pandering, though I can't get into that here. Also, Close has the jaw of a prize fighter.
The Silent PartnerThe Silent Partner
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $5.00
(B) High concept crime drama about a bank clerk who learns of a robbery and steals 50k beforehand, though the robber finds out. It's not as thrills-oriented as you might expect, but it has an interesting story, solid performances (especially Gould) and it delivers well in the last act.
Futurama: The Beast with a Billion BacksFuturama: The Beast with a Billion Backs
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $1.85
(B) Like the previous Futurama release, it suffers from the format, though it's generally quite funny, if not as good as the show in its prime.
The Bloodstained ShadowThe Bloodstained Shadow
Buy used from: $4.98
(C) Late giallo has its moments, but is derivative and lacking in the style of the earlier films.
Miracle MileMiracle Mile
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $3.99
(B) Ultra-bleak thriller about a man who discovers nuclear war will begin in an hour. Well-done for the most part and effectively gloomy. On the downside, it's a bit dated, and I'm not much of an Edwards fan.
The Case of the Bloody IrisThe Case of the Bloody Iris
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $8.54
(B-) Apart from the relative lack of blood and a more straight forward plot, this is another wholly typical giallo. If you're a fan of the genre it's worth a watch, though don't be surprised if most of the plot details leave you in a few days, to be lost in the great mound of giallo cliches.
The FanThe Fan
Buy used from: $9.77
(B-) Much maligned tale of a murderous fan/stalker, though I thought it was decent. They spend too much time on Bacall's comeback, but the actual thriller elements work well, and I always like Michael Biehn, though this is some of his weaker work.
The GeneralThe General
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $3.54
(B+) Famous Keaton film is indeed one of the more purely entertaining silent films around. Keaton's stunts are great, and it's a surprisingly effective combination of drama, action and comedy.
To Die ForTo Die For
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $2.88
(A-) This media satire was much hyped at the time, though it seems a bit forgotten now. That's too bad, cause it has some very funny black comedy and is interesting from beginning to end. An excellent film, and definitely superior to "Election", the most popular media satire of recent years.
