Buy new: $89.99 / Used from: $59.99
Incredible collection of 133 films from the earliest days of cinema. The condition of these old pieces of film is often less than stellar, but they are almost always fascinating as we see the development of cinema as it happens before us. The five-disc set is broken down by topic, with a certain unavoidable amount of overlap.
Unseen Cinema - Early American Avant Garde Film 1894-1941Unseen Cinema - Early American Avant Garde Film 1894-1941
Buy new: $66.99 / Used from: $59.99
The films in this massive collection are not so avant garde as they are unseen. They are only avant garde in the sense that all cinema in its early stages could be seen as experimental. There are tons of home movies made by average people, too.

Thanhouser CollectionThanhouser Collection
Buy new: $9.99
7 classic silent films that were produced between 1911 and 1915 by the pioneering Thanhouser Company of New Rochelle, New York. What most impressed me about them were their lack of excessive sentimentality and their ability to strip a story to its essentials and tell it in a short amount of time. Good fun.
Mad Love - The Films of Evgeni BauerMad Love - The Films of Evgeni Bauer
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $18.99
These three short films from the years 1913-16 are like classical literature expressed visually, with the morbid heaviness of Edgar Allan Poe combined with 'highbrow' culture of Russia just before the Russian Revolution. They are sad and haunting stories beautifully and elegantly presented by director, Evgeni Bauer, who uses various techniques to create a mood, or underline an idea or emotion.
Winsor McCay - The Master EditionWinsor McCay - The Master Edition

This 1911-1921 work still ranks as some of the best animation ever. It is simple to see how it influenced everyone from Miyazaki to Disney. It is also easy to see that from the start, animation had elements for adults, and elements that appealed more to kids. "The way a mosquito operates" resembles a Picasso drawing in motion, except with Windsor's quirky sense of humor.

Without the generosity and support of comedian Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle, the cinematic art of Buster Keaton may never have blossomed. The 12 existing shorts in "The Best Arbuckle/Keaton Collection" made between 1917-1919 display Arbuckle's comedic skill while revealing the astonishing speed in which co-star Keaton mastered the medium.

Buster Keaton was arguably the cinema's first modernist, an old-fashioned romantic with a 20th-century mind behind a deadpan visage. In addition to the previously released 11 features and 19 shorts, this set boasts the exclusive Keaton Plus, a collection of rarities and tributes. The greatest find is the long-lost ending to Hard Luck (1921), now restored to complete the film's final inspired gag.
The Harold Lloyd Comedy Collection Vols. 1-3The Harold Lloyd Comedy Collection Vols. 1-3
Buy new: $75.99 / Used from: $51.99
Definitive account of one of silent cinema's greatest comedians, and for a time, its most popular star. Has virtually all of Lloyd's 1920s features, most of his talking pictures, and a healthy collection of shorts. Because Lloyd retained control over much of his output, the films have remained under his estate's control through the decades, & the quality of the key titles is generally excellent.
Erich Von Stroheim's GreedErich Von Stroheim's Greed
Buy used from: $25.94
Erich Von Stroheim's 1924 silent classic continues to have profound impact. Warner Home Video is restoring this film for DVD.

These four films are the height of German expressionism. "Nosferatu" is on the next DVD set in the list, but the other three are unduplicated.

Buy new: $89.99 / Used from: $75.99
Murnau, of course, was one of the giants of silent cinema. It's surprising how well these films hold up today as works of art AND as entertainments. Only the comedies of Keaton, Chaplin, and Lloyd are more compelling.
Fritz Lang Epic Collection (Metropolis/Die Nibelungen/Woman in the Moon/Spies)Fritz Lang Epic Collection (Metropolis/Die Nibelungen/Woman in the Moon/Spies)
Buy new: $89.99 / Used from: $69.99
Metropolis and Die Nibelungen are the two stand-out titles here. Metropolis looks as if it were filmed yesterday in B+W. The score was completely rerecorded and it sounds amazing. Instead of just random music played in the background, it conveys the emotions occurring in the film. It and Die Nibelungen contain various extras that are quite interesting.
Nanook of the North (Criterion Collection Spine #33)Nanook of the North (Criterion Collection Spine #33)
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $16.95
Has a place in cinematic history as the first feature-length documentary, shot by Robert Flaherty in 1922 near Inukjuaq on Hudson Bay in the arctic part of Quebec, Canada. A former explorer and prospector in that region, Flaherty decided to document the lifestyle of the Inuit. The result was a movie that showed a distant place and a foreign culture, rather than something staged in a studio.

Stylistically, this film (1925) is a revolutionary film, not only in subject matter, but also in its unique use of montage. As a pioneer who championed a new purpose for cinema, Eisenstein proposed a "kino fist" approach to filmmaking, in which the film attacks the viewerÂ’s senses with symbolic metaphors, rhythmic editing, & highly-charged melodrama.

In 1924, Douglas Fairbanks is a superb thief, bringing his trademark humour and athleticism to the role. Julanne Johnston is a beautiful princess hiding demurely behind her lacy veil. The film also has great villains with Sojin a particularly wicked Mongol prince out to get Johnston, while Anna May Wong schemes to aid him.

Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $13.40
Known primarily for the memorable contribution by Lon Chaney as actor & makeup artist. His moving portrayal of the disfigured escaped convict who haunts Paris Opera House is perhaps the sole reason to watch this film. As a makeup artist he created one of the most indelible images in film history: the skull-like head of the phantom that conveys sadness, anger, and horror at the same time.
The Lost World (Restored Edition)The Lost World (Restored Edition)
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $8.29
The dinosaurs in this 1925 film are certainly not of the caliber of those in Jurassic Park, but for their time they were shockingly realistic. The sequences with them are interesting because they take on human characteristics. When they are attacked, they scream in pain. When they defend themselves and their children, they hug in happiness. They even inspect their own wounds.

Harry Langdon ...The Forgotten ClownHarry Langdon ...The Forgotten Clown
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $19.98
Harry Langdon is considered to be the 4th great silent comedian next to Chaplin, Keaton & Lloyd. The 3 films on this DVD show Langdon at his best & are the reason why briefly, during 1926-27, he was very popular indeed. Afterwards his decline into obscurity was swift, not least because he left one of the people most responsible for nurturing and developing his talent - Frank Capra.
Wings [VHS] (1927)Wings [VHS] (1927)

The first film to win an Academy Award for Best Picture is rather long, but the combat flying sequences are still some of the best ever filmed, and are well worth the effort.
Crowd, The [VHS]Crowd, The [VHS]

Due to limitations imposed by early 1928 sound filming techniques, the film's moving camera innovations would not be equaled for another decade. Likewise, audiences sought escapism over The Crowd's style of stark realism.

Man With the Movie CameraMan With the Movie Camera
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $19.06
This playful 1929 film is at once a documentary of a day in the life of the Soviet Union, a documentary of the filming of said documentary, and a depiction of an audience watching the film. Even the editing of the film is documented. We often see the cameraman who is purportedly making the film, but we rarely, if ever, see any of the footage he seems to be in the act of shooting!
