Beethoven: The Complete Piano Sonatas & Concertos [Box Set]Beethoven: The Complete Piano Sonatas & Concertos [Box Set] by Claudio Arrau
Buy used from: $298.98
Arrau's complete Philips set is almost incomparable. From the Waldsteins final mvmt, to the final three sonata's- this is one that combines poetry, intelligence, and virtuosity in perfect meaure. When recorded properly, Arrau has the most beautiful tone I know. OF THE HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.
Beethoven: The Complete Piano SonatasBeethoven: The Complete Piano Sonatas
Buy new: $57.99 / Used from: $37.49
Kempff and Arrau reflect the beauty of interpretation and are perfect examples of why you should have more the one recording. Kempff recorded these works three times and this, his final cycle, is the culmination of a lifetime knowledge. OF THE HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION
Beethoven: Piano Sonatas, Vol. 4Beethoven: Piano Sonatas, Vol. 4
Buy new: $38.98 / Used from: $22.99
Paul Lewis' new cycle is an absolute pleasure. How one so young can have so much to say about such profound works is almost surreal. Though unavailabe at the moment in a single box set, it is worth every penny and, even though it is new, is surely one of the finest sets ever recorded!
Artur Schnabel Beethoven KlaviersonatenArtur Schnabel Beethoven Klaviersonaten by Schnabel
Buy new: $19.98 / Used from: $12.98
Schnabel's survey is really the old testament of the new testament. With a combination of authenticity and intelligence, I cherish this cycle and recommend it especially for those experienced with these works. Of particular interest is Schnabels adherence to Beeth metronomone markings.
Beethoven: The Complete Piano Sonatas; Bagatelles Op. 119, Op. 126 [Box Set]Beethoven: The Complete Piano Sonatas; Bagatelles Op. 119, Op. 126 [Box Set]
Buy new: $98.98 / Used from: $57.99
This inexpensive cycle is all fire and brimstone. It might lack some of the beauty of Arrau and Lewis, but it certainly demands your attention. The playing is phenomenal and is a wonderful introduction for the passionate youth.
Beethoven: The Great Piano SonatasBeethoven: The Great Piano Sonatas
Buy used from: $191.06
Though not complete, Serkin was my first Beethoven experience. I still return to his recordings for authority, passion, and intelligence. I adore his Beethoven and rank it as one of my personal favourites.
Beethoven: Complete Piano Sonatas [Box Set]Beethoven: Complete Piano Sonatas [Box Set] by Alfred Brendel
Buy new: $152.98 / Used from: $83.31
Brendel has recorded these sonata mulitple times for multiple labels. His Vox and Philips cycles are an ideal example of how ones view of these pieces alters as one ages. From the fire of his early vox set, to the intellect of his Philips set, Brendel always has something important to say.
Beethoven: Complete Piano Sonatas [Box Set]Beethoven: Complete Piano Sonatas [Box Set]
Buy new: $168.98
Annie Fischer[Hungarton]Very expensive and not to everyone's taste. This is, however, for those who know these works. I adore this set and return to it almost more than any other. This is one of the most passionate and individual sets on the market.
Beethoven: Piano Sonatas [Box Set]Beethoven: Piano Sonatas [Box Set]
Buy new: $58.99 / Used from: $35.99
This was one of my favourite sets as a teenager and I still find the same intensity. Though it contains some dry spots, Gilels is at his best when Beeth is at his most passionate. This set belongs in every Beeth afic's collection. Not complete.
Beethoven: The Complete Sonatas [Box Set]Beethoven: The Complete Sonatas [Box Set] by Ludwig van Beethoven
Buy new: $99.98 / Used from: $64.00
Love it or hate it, I love it and regard it as one of the top five finest sets on the market. The playing is as virtusoic as Kovacevich and as intelligent as Brendel. Absolutely unmissable and, for one looking to have the most well rounded cycle on the market-I would recommend this.
Beethoven: The Piano Sonatas [Box Set]Beethoven: The Piano Sonatas [Box Set]
Buy new: $66.99 / Used from: $38.99
Ashkenazy is really overlooked due to the oversaturation of his recordings and limitless rep[think Richter], but when he is gone there is going to be a serious re-evaluation of his pianism. Ashkenazy is as reliable as ever and transcendent at times[slow mvmt of the Hammer is breath-taking].
Beethoven: The Complete Piano SonatasBeethoven: The Complete Piano Sonatas
Buy new: $54.98
This is a wonderful cycle re-released by Music and Arts. I would recommend it more for Afic's than those seeking their first cycle. For those looking for a new cycle however, this is not to be missed.
Beethoven: Piano Sonatas Opp. 90, 101, 106, 109, 110 & 111Beethoven: Piano Sonatas Opp. 90, 101, 106, 109, 110 & 111 by Ludwig van Beethoven
Buy used from: $12.95
Solomon is one of my favourite interprs. To acquire his cycle will be expensive[not in a single box] but it is worth it. His Hammer is regarded as the finest on disc, his late sonata's are stunning. I cant wait till they get smart and put it together so more people can enjoy it.
The Glenn Gould Edition: BeethovenThe Glenn Gould Edition: Beethoven
Buy used from: $54.53
Gould did not record them all and this set should only be bought by Gould fans. This is more Gould than Beethoven and despite some incredible playing-Gould ignores repeats, dynamic markings, and whatever else he feels like. I listen to this more out of a perverted fascination than for insight[though insight it has aplenty if only to hear these pieces anew]
Ludwig van Beethoven: Piano SonatasLudwig van Beethoven: Piano Sonatas
A unique bargain for collectors-early Serkin, Moiseiwitsch[Path], Rubinstein, Horowitz, Gieseking, Backhaus, Horowitz in all the name sonata's and op31.2. Includes one the wildest and fastest Appasionatas I have ever heard.
Walter Gieseking: Unissued Broadcasts from Radio FrankfurtWalter Gieseking: Unissued Broadcasts from Radio Frankfurt
Buy new: $31.98 / Used from: $9.08
[Hessian 1940's Broadcasts]-This is the single fastest version of the Appasionata I have ever heard-and almost note perfect, this even outdoes Richter's Carnegie Hall triumph in both speed and accuracy. Obviously you need to have heard the piece to appreciate what is going on.
Beethoven: The Last Three Piano SonatasBeethoven: The Last Three Piano Sonatas
Buy used from: $23.95
Richter only played[and recorded] 22 of the Beeth sonata's. His interps arent for everything, but when he is on[as with everything he touched] he is revelatory. His Op109-111, Hammer, Appass, Diabelli, are all must haves-of particular interest was his love and advocacy for the early classicalesque sonata's
Beethoven: Piano Sonatas (Complete) [Box Set]Beethoven: Piano Sonatas (Complete) [Box Set]
Buy used from: $65.00
Some love it, some hate it. Gulda's cycle is somewhat legendary. I particularly dont care for it, but many do, so it should be considered.
Piotr Anderszewski - Beethoven: Diabelli VariationsPiotr Anderszewski - Beethoven: Diabelli Variations by Ludwig van Beethoven
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $8.25
Many pianists regard the Diabelli Var as the culmination of Beeth's pianistic art-Rec Recordings[no order]-Richter, Arrau, Kovacevich, Anderszewski, Pollini, Brendel, Serkin, Horszowski, and Ashkenazy.
Beethoven: The Five Piano ConcertosBeethoven: The Five Piano Concertos
Buy new: $23.97 / Used from: $21.52
Rec Concerto REcordings-My favourite two are Fleisher's and Perahia's. Both are absolutely stunning and can be considered almost definative.
Wilhelm Backhaus: Decca Beethoven SonatasWilhelm Backhaus: Decca Beethoven Sonatas by Beethoven
Buy new: $123.49 / Used from: $74.99
Too expensive here, but a remarkable set from one of the great Beethoven minds.
Beethoven: Die Späten KlaviersonatenBeethoven: Die Späten Klaviersonaten
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $13.23
Pollini is a wonderul Beethoven interp, proven here by his early DG recording of the last Five sonata's which I still listen to often. He is recording all the sonata's currently for DG
Barenboim on Beethoven - The Complete Piano Sonatas Live from BerlinBarenboim on Beethoven - The Complete Piano Sonatas Live from Berlin
Buy new: $134.99 / Used from: $41.52
This is interesting and should be viewed by all who love the Beeth. Regarding his CD cycles[DG and LondonDecca?] I am not the biggest fan. The playing is great, but the fire and passion arent always there. I almost never listen to it anymore[I have never heard the LondonDeccaSet]
Great Pianists: Moiseiwitsch 2Great Pianists: Moiseiwitsch 2
Buy used from: $24.95
Moiseiwitsch recorded Piano Cto's 3 and 5, and sonata's op53,13,27.2,and the Kreutzer Sonata. I love him so maybe that is why I love them. For collectors.
Michelangeli Plays BeethovenMichelangeli Plays Beethoven
Buy used from: $49.98
Michelangli's Beeth is interesting and, at its best, brilliant. He only record cto's 1,3,5 and sonata's, op 2.3, 7, 22, 26,111 but he is note perfect and, in op111, a must hear.

Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $6.99
My favourite interpr of the Triple Concerto[Richter, Oistrakh, Rostropovich, Karajan---what more could you ask for[maybe a little less Karajan but hey......] Also contains the finest Brahms Double Concerto ever from Szell and Cleveland[Oistr,Rostro]
Beethoven: Complete Music for Cello & PianoBeethoven: Complete Music for Cello & Piano

More Richter and Rostro-these Cello Sonata's are standard requirements for any Beeth fan.
Beethoven: Complete Music for Piano and VioloncelloBeethoven: Complete Music for Piano and Violoncello
Buy new: $25.98 / Used from: $10.76
unlike his recent beethoven sonata survey, these cello sonata's are a complete success. I cant say enough about how unique and lively they are. Wonderful!
Beethoven: Complete Violin SonatasBeethoven: Complete Violin Sonatas
Buy new: $50.98 / Used from: $64.99
It is almost impossible to find one set of Violin Sonata's that is perfect, though there are many very good ones. This one is highly recommended. I would avoid Mutter's. Argerich and Kremer are good most of the time. So many. So many
