City of Thieves: A NovelCity of Thieves: A Novel by David Benioff
Buy new: $16.47 / Used from: $5.40
A beautiful book! I couldn't put it down. I've read other fictional WWII war narratives before but this one was the first one that truly intrigued me with its story, themes, and humanism.
Plain TruthPlain Truth by Jodi Picoult
Buy new: $11.52 / Used from: $2.98
I'll admit that I wasn't expecting a whole lot from Jodi Piccoult. I thought her writing would be a step above a romance writer... but she surprised me. I liked her characters and the story kept me intrigued. I can understand why people like her so much.
Code Talker: A Novel About the Navajo Marines of World War TwoCode Talker: A Novel About the Navajo Marines of World War Two by Joseph Bruchac
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.54
While this book hasn't made it onto my list of favorite children/YA lit, it certainly packs a punch. The book tells what it was like for a Navajo man to use the language of his ancestors as a code during WWII. It's ultimately a story of cultural survival and pride. But it's also a great war story for the 12+ crowd.
Naruto, Vol. 2Naruto, Vol. 2
Buy new: $7.95 / Used from: $0.76
I'm still curious about this entire manga/anime craze. I've read Full-Metal Alchemist and liked it but it just seems like it's never going to end. From what I've heard the Naruto series has built a pretty solid narrative. I'm already looking forward to reading the next one.
Kindred (Bluestreak Black Women Writers)Kindred (Bluestreak Black Women Writers) by Octavia E. Butler
Buy new: $9.75 / Used from: $3.06
I couldn't put this one down. Butler's writing is completely captivating and realistic. Her depictions of slavery and the psychological torment of slaves are thorough and understandable to readers. This would make a great addition to any high school history class!
Night (Oprah's Book Club)Night (Oprah's Book Club) by Elie Wiesel
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $1.99
An incredibly sad story as all Holocaust stories tend to be. I finally understand why it's on every high school and college required reading list.

The girls finally show their strength. They're still not as interesting as the guy characters but I'm eagerly anticipating their growth as fighters and characters.
