![]() | Jazz for Kids: Sing, Clap, Wiggle and Shake by Various Artists
Buy used from: $34.73 These are '40's jazz and swing selections by the original top musicians and singers, like Ella Fitzgerald, Lionel Hampton, and Louis Armstrong, that just happen to be children's songs. Includes a jolly unknown treasure called "Potato Chips", and Armstrong's heartbreakingly beautiful "Wonderful World". Good remasters.

![]() | Silly Reflection by Lunch Money
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $11.95 This makes the top of my list. The tunes are utterly fresh alternative-style, and cheery and upbeat enough for young ears. The whimsical, strikingly original lyrics are pure poetry, written from a child's-eye view about things in real life that interest children. Don't be surprised if you find yourself playing this one in your bedroom after the little one is asleep.

![]() | Mediterranean Lullaby by Various Artists
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $5.99 Outstanding musicianship. This is my personal favorite for children from among the quality Ellipsis Arts label lullaby series. I'd either program tracks 3 & 14 to play first, or skip them altogether, not because they're not beautiful, but because they're more energetic than the others and might interrupt the progression toward sleep.

![]() | Postcard from Summerisle by Patrick & Eugene
Buy used from: $70.22 For all you indie-rocker parents out there, here's one for your kids. Should have them bopping around in their carseats while you drive with a great, big grin on your face. Nothing too harsh or too sappy. Totally original and undescribable. You just have to listen to the samples.

![]() | Big Blues: Blues Music for Kids by B.B. King
Buy used from: $4.91 The amazon.com page gives the names of the composers instead of the performers who are listed on the cover and include Sonny Terry and BB King. The tunes are kid-friendly, but they're the real thing. Like most blues, the tempo is a little too leisurely to dance to--more music to play to or ride in the car to.

![]() | Got No Strings by Michelle Shocked
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $6.48 If you pin me down, I'd have to call most of the music on this album "alt. country-western" or "country-western/pop", except for track 5 which is bluegrass. These are Disney tunes from some of the older, classic movies, reinvented. Whatever you call it, if your family grooves to string bands, this CD is a pleasure.

![]() | A Child's Celebration of Song 2 by Various Artists
Buy used from: $4.91 This is close to a traditional kiddie CD, because many of the songs are children's classics. However, all but one of the singers are better known for their music for adults, so the quality is up a few notches. It has a few unconventional choices from styles such as zydeco and R&B, and even one selection that includes a little gentle rap.

![]() | Between Me and You by Denis Gauthier
Another bedtime album. This one is alternative folk with fresh-sounding arrangements--an almost solo effort by Denis Gauthier of Canada's group, theBetween. Even if no one told you, you'd know that this was by a father for his child. Though never sappy, his heart shines through.

![]() | I Got Shoes by Sweet Honey in the Rock
Buy new: $12.98 / Used from: $4.41 Sweet Honey in the Rock is a magnificent a capella group of African-American women. This CD is mostly spirituals with a few African-inspired songs thrown in for good measure. It includes a short narration encouraging self-esteem. Though oriented toward African-American children, the glorious music can be enjoyed by anyone.
|
![]() | A Child's Celebration of Folk Music by Various Artists
Buy used from: $5.00 Traditional-style American folk music performed by the all-time greats of the genre. Includes Woody Guthrie himself performing his classic for children--The Car Song. Fun for children and enjoyable for any adults around. Worth handing down when your child outgrows it.

![]() | Shake Sugaree: Taj Mahal Sings And Plays For Children by Taj Mahal
Buy used from: $2.77 Taj Mahal can't be classified. His laid-back style spans blues, Caribbean, story songs, African, and all are charming. It invites singing along. Great for the car.
