This makes the top of my list. The tunes are utterly fresh alternative-style, and cheery and upbeat enough for young ears. The whimsical, strikingly original lyrics are pure poetry, written from a child's-eye view about things in real life that interest children. Don't be surprised if you find yourself playing this one in your bedroom after the little one is asleep.

For all you indie-rocker parents out there, here's one for your kids. Should have them bopping around in their carseats while you drive with a great, big grin on your face. Nothing too harsh or too sappy. Totally original and undescribable. You just have to listen to the samples.

If you pin me down, I'd have to call most of the music on this album "alt. country-western" or "country-western/pop", except for track 5 which is bluegrass. These are Disney tunes from some of the older, classic movies, reinvented. Whatever you call it, if your family grooves to string bands, this CD is a pleasure.

Another bedtime album. This one is alternative folk with fresh-sounding arrangements--an almost solo effort by Denis Gauthier of Canada's group, theBetween. Even if no one told you, you'd know that this was by a father for his child. Though never sappy, his heart shines through.

Traditional-style American folk music performed by the all-time greats of the genre. Includes Woody Guthrie himself performing his classic for children--The Car Song. Fun for children and enjoyable for any adults around. Worth handing down when your child outgrows it.
