Leonard Bernstein's hit musical updating the story of Romeo and Juliet to the mean streets of New York. The fusion of music, dance, and story is fantastic. 10 Academy Awards. TopkapiTopkapi
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $6.30
Suspense and comedy in a jewel heist from the most important treasure museum of Istanbul. I was terribly impressed with this film when I was young...trying to imagine how someone might steal the gem collection in the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. The director, Jules Dassin, cast his wife Melina Mercouri in the film and she is effortlessly effervescent.
The Wizard of Oz (Three-Disc Collector's Edition)The Wizard of Oz (Three-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy used from: $17.62
The Wizard of Oz" and "2001: A Space Odyssey" are in a class by themselves. And their special effects are still dazzling decades later. The "Wicked Witch of the West" has become one of the most recognized icons in American culture...see, for example, her reappearance in Tim Burton's animation fantasy "The Nightmare Before Christmas.
The Lion in WinterThe Lion in Winter
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $5.88
Bitter family quarrel between King Henry II and his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine. Katherine Hepburn's performance defines what great acting should be like
The Flight of the PhoenixThe Flight of the Phoenix
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $2.10
You can taste the sand on your teeth in this one. A cargo plane crashes in the vast Sahara and 11 survivors desperately seek a way to find water and escape from the merciless heat. Amazing cast.
ExodusExodus
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $5.95
A gripping epic about the struggle to get a boatload of Jewish holocaust refugees into Palestine when it was British controlled. Based on true events. [In 2007, a remarkable documentary was made about the incident entitled "We Were Exodus" which showed the French support for the boatload of Jewish survivors]
Ballets RussesBallets Russes
Buy new: $27.49 / Used from: $11.94
A biography of the (two) ballet troupes that carried the flame of Russian ballet after Diaghilev's death. Even today, old age does not stop the dancers from contributing to their art. I thought the film made a more convincing statement of "living for art's sake" than even the better known "Red Shoes.
Death of a Salesman (Broadway Theatre Archive)Death of a Salesman (Broadway Theatre Archive)
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $12.00
One of the 5 best NYC theatrical performances preserved on film. It is a shattering drama of a middle class American squeezed between the dark twins of aging and failure. Others within the top 5 might be Claudia McNeil's volcanic performance in "Raisin in the Sun" or "Paul Robeson - James Earl Jones One Man Show" or Jason Robards in "The Iceman Cometh.
Midnight CowboyMidnight Cowboy
Buy used from: $2.00
A parable about friendship and transformation between two unlikely acquaintances - lost and forgotten in the gritty underbelly of New York City.
Lust for LifeLust for Life
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $4.47
Film mimics art in this gloriously photographed biopic of Van Gogh. I remember a scene with the artist wearing a straw hat circled by candles against a backdrop of glittering blue water...here, the canvas of the film is an impressionist masterpiece. In my opinion, only John Huston's "Moulin Rouge" comes as close as this movie in reproducing the color subtlety of the great 19th century painters.
The Boy Who Wanted to Be a Bear (Collector's Series Edition)The Boy Who Wanted to Be a Bear (Collector's Series Edition)
Buy used from: $4.95
Astonishing - visually and musically...Other dazzling animation are "Igor Stravinsky - The Soldier's Tale" (Russia), "The Book of the Dead" (Japan), "Old Man and the Sea" (Canada), "Sita Sings The Blues" (India), "Persepolis" (Iran), "Lady and the Tramp" (USA), "Princes et Princesses" (France), "Fantastic Planet" (Czech), "Mary and Max" (Australia), and "Raining Cats and Frogs" (France)
Pinocchio (Disney Gold Classic Collection)Pinocchio (Disney Gold Classic Collection)
Buy used from: $8.75
Jiminy Cricket - the conscience with a sense of humor - introduces us to a wonderland where dreams come true, moral choices affect human form, and a simple wooden puppet comes alive. This film along with "Disney's Fantasia" probably represent the finest art of his team of animators. The two movies were so cost intensive they actually lost money when first released.
The Shoes of the FishermanThe Shoes of the Fisherman
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $4.99
As tensions mount about nuclear escalation, the Vatican elects a Russian Pope. Balancing religion and politics, the Pontiff tries to use the prestige of his office to avert world disaster.
One Day in SeptemberOne Day in September
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $2.00
The story about the actual terrorist kidnapping of the Jewish athletes during the Munich Olympics. Fictional plots about criminal terrorists do not have the nerve-shattering suspense of the real thing...but yes I did enjoy "Black Sunday, Die Hard, From Russia with Love, The Odessa File, and The Taking of Pelham One Two Three.
The Ramallah Concert - Knowledge Is the Beginning/West-Eastern Divan Orchestra/BarenboimThe Ramallah Concert - Knowledge Is the Beginning/West-Eastern Divan Orchestra/Barenboim
Buy used from: $89.99
One of the most inspirational films you will ever see. In the battleground that is "the Middle East", a world-renowned symphony conductor creates a young people's orchestra of Israelis and Arabs to allow them to work harmoniously towards a common goal. Daniel Barenboim is one of those rare persons who knows how to break down walls between adversaries. The other side of the coin is "The Lemon Tree.
The Other Conquest (La Otra Conquista)The Other Conquest (La Otra Conquista)
Buy new: $18.99 / Used from: $5.75
One of the turning points of world history was the clash of civilizations between Europe and pre-Columbian Mexico. Both vast in scale and intimate in portrait, this exciting film shows the war between these two cultures and the contest between a Catholic priest and an Aztec priest to win over each other's souls. I often compare the movie's themes with "Black Robe.
The Caine MutinyThe Caine Mutiny
Buy used from: $6.95
A compelling human drama of the high seas. It was praised for its hot, intense portrait of a man damaged by war - a soul in distress - through the brilliant performance of Humphrey Bogart as the unstable captain. Another fascinating film of a command breakdown at sea is Charles Laughton's "Mutiny on the Bounty.
The Horse's Mouth - Criterion CollectionThe Horse's Mouth - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $15.50
A satire about an eccentric artist: arrogant, roguish, irritating, dishonest, unkempt, uncouth ... and yet transcendent. Put simply, the character Alec Guinness creates on film is positively unique.
Controversial Classics Collection (Advise and Consent / The Americanization of Emily / Bad Day at Black Rock / Blackboard Jungle / A Face in the Crowd / Fury / I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang)Controversial Classics Collection (Advise and Consent / The Americanization of Emily / Bad Day at Black Rock / Blackboard Jungle / A Face in the Crowd / Fury / I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang)
Buy new: $66.49 / Used from: $54.50
Each of these films is essential viewing for creating a socially just world..."A Face in the Crowd" is a scathing movie about media manipulation. But don't overlook "Bad Day at Black Rock" which is a superbly directed suspense drama. Controversial classics that ought to be in this collection are "Elmer Gantry, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Dr. Strangelove, and (of course) Rebel Without a Cause.
Portrait of JenniePortrait of Jennie
Buy used from: $9.84
"We were lonely and unloved...then time made a mistake." A struggling artist finds a bewitching girl in NYC Central Park, opens his heart, then meets her again and again, each time remarkably older and more lovely. This other-worldly romance is filmed first in dreamy black and white (as if framed by photographer Alfred Stieglitz), then it shifts to tints of green, rouge, and sepia.
Fahrenheit 451Fahrenheit 451
Buy used from: $7.89
An essential story of science fiction that, for the most part, has accurately predicted a future where people do not read. In this culture, owning and sharing books is illegal...but a few dissidents try to resist.
Phase IVPhase IV
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $7.49
In the desert, as scientists begin studying a colony of ants that is exhibiting intelligent behavior, the question becomes which living being is testing the other. This film boasts amazing insect photography. I recommend this film for those who enjoyed the metaphysical subtext of the 1950's classic "Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
Apocalypse Now - The Complete Dossier (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition)Apocalypse Now - The Complete Dossier (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $9.99
War helicopters against an orange sky - the smell of napalm - chaos midst ancient temples - this is the quintessential film of America in Vietnam Regarding the colossal political blunders of getting involved in these conflicts, I can do no better than to recommend "The Fog of War" or "In the Loop.
ProteusProteus
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $14.75
In the time of Charles Darwin, a German zoologist discovered thousands of new species of single cell organisms and he meticulously drew their symmetrical shapes as an art form. Fast forward to the twentieth century. A filmmaker spent 20 years photographing these exquisite drawings to create a kaleidoscope of the infinite richness of nature.
Live and BecomeLive and Become
Buy new: $25.99
Ethiopia, drought 1980's. In the war-torn country a mother - who is Christian - instructs her son to masquerade as a Black Jew so that he can be airlifted to safety into Israel. Haunted by the past, loved by different mothers, the boy struggles with his "identity" and the meaning of his mother's last command "go, live, and become." A very powerful ending.
