![]() | Ludwig Wittgenstein: The Duty of Genius by Ray Monk
Buy new: $16.50 / Used from: $5.22 One of the best philosophical biographies available. Read about Wittgenstein's strange life, learn your way around his work, and get a detailed picture of Cambridge philosophy in the early 20th century.

![]() | BERTRAND RUSSELL: The Spirit of Solitude 1872-1921 by Ray Monk
Buy used from: $12.70 Ray Monk's follow-up. Not as good as the Duty of Genius, but a solid introduction to Russell. I still haven't made it to the second volume.

![]() | Men of Mathematics (Touchstone Book) by E.T. Bell
Buy new: $12.53 / Used from: $3.00 One of my all-time favorite books. Bell gives short biographies on twenty-some of the most important thinkers in history. His stories and style are very engaging and often hilarious. While the book is not always as accurate as you might like, it is an excellent way to get a sense of how modern mathematics emerged and what the main debates are.

![]() | The Road to Stockholm: Nobel Prizes, Science, and Scientists by Istvan Hargittai
Buy used from: $8.85 This book is slightly disjointed and redundant, but nevertheless gives an interesting perspective into the minds behind Nobel-winning science. I particularly liked the chapter on mentors and the introduction, which is chock full of Nobel trivia.

![]() | The Man Who Knew Too Much: Alan Turing and the Invention of the Computer (Great Discoveries) by David Leavitt
Buy new: $11.21 / Used from: $3.40 A solid biography of Alan Turing, whose life is so interesting, it is hard to tell badly. Leavitt has a slightly irritating writing style, but he lays out the narrative well and does a commendable job of explaining Turing's important to philosophy. Too much time is spent on the enigma code and not enough on the end of his life.

![]() | Isaac Newton by James Gleick
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $4.99 This is probably the most popular scientific biography in recent memory. I don't see what all of the fuss is about. The book is very readable, but at times overly redundant or speculative. Still, it does a good job of motivating Newton's creativity and far-sightedness.

![]() | A Beautiful Mind: The Life of Mathematical Genius and Nobel Laureate John Nash by Sylvia Nasar
Buy new: $12.48 / Used from: $0.01 Forget the movie! This book is a page turner. It does great justice to Nash's struggle with Schizophrenia as well as his deep contribution to mathematics. I read it in a single Saturday; I just could not put it down.

![]() | The Honors Class: Hilbert's Problems and Their Solvers by Ben Yandell
Buy new: $29.95 / Used from: $13.78 Great collection of short biographies of contemporary mathematicians.

![]() | The Time of My Life: An Autobiography by Willard Van Orman Quine
Buy new: $32.58 / Used from: $29.00 A bit hard to find and not exactly a page-turner, but definitely worth a glimpse if you (1) love Quine, or (2) are interested in all of the excruciating minutiae of academic life in the middle part of the last century. I fall into both categories and found a great hardcover copy for 4 bucks at a used bookstore.
