TV recording of the famous concert captured on the Anniversary and Serenity CDs. Some of the finest and most beautiful jazz on record. Its fun to watch live. Getz fiddles a lot with the microphone and loses his cool. Rufus Ried looks cool in his T-shirt. Lewis and Barron's body language.... Plus the hip audience with its syncopated clapping. A joy!

Its one thing to listen to Wes, quite another to see him in action. Not so much a surprise, but a delight - as he has such an interesting technique. Round Midnight is just extra-ordinary. (PS. No wonder the MC on the CD Smokin asks after one tune "How do you do that...Wes, how to you do that?").
Stephane Grappelli: A Life in the Jazz CenturyStephane Grappelli: A Life in the Jazz Century

This is a very classy documentary. Its full of film clips of Grappelli, and of course Django Reinhardt. If you want to see what all the fuss is about Django's playing, this the place to start. It has every Django clip available. Grappelli's post-Reinhardt music was exceptional, but invariably overshadowed by his illustrious partner, so this redresses the balance.

I've got two Blakey live CDs from 1958, from Paris, that are notable for the quality and the energy of the performances (and the audience's performance come to think of it). This DVD is indeed a real treat. If you haven't seen Lee Morgan at this age on film before (e.g. on Jazz 625), you may be shocked at how young he looks compared to the maturity of his playing.

A great period for Brubeck and Desmond. I'm hooked on Brubeck's music and style from this period personally. Highly rated by the reviewers.

This is the Jazz 625 concert on DVD. With Ray Brown on bass. If you've heard, but never seen, Peterson in action...you'll be amazed. I was, but then I always am with Peterson.

Although I've read Pepper's harrowing autobiography, nothing quite prepared me for the film's impact. The real plus points are seeing Pepper play live. It would be good to have a CD of the specific music played during the film. Its good stuff.

This film fascinated me in my teens, and it still does. Not just the music or the performances and performers - the whole scene.

Its Billy Holiday's Fine and Mellow song that most reviewers write about. Quite right. Its a magic moment. The rest of the DVD is good too. There a good reason why Miles and Billy are on the front. Classic jazz.

Buy this to see and hear the sublime and supreme Benny Carter in action..plus a stella front-line, with some favourite performers - Pass, Sims, Flanagan et al.

The perfect line-up for storming performances.
Jazz : A Film By Ken BurnsJazz : A Film By Ken Burns

I got this expensive set for a present combining several birthdays/Christmasses. Was it worth it? Yes, for the film clips and the chance to dip into eras and genres I'd otherwise ignore. The commentary was OK, the talking heads were so-so. I'd have like to have seen more artists interviewed..."not him again" was a thought often comes to mind.
Norman Granz Jazz In Montreux Presents Oscar Peterson Trio '77Norman Granz Jazz In Montreux Presents Oscar Peterson Trio '77

Interesting to see and hear Peterson play with two basses (and great bass players at that - Brown and NHOP). Of course, Peterson had the talent to play and out-play even these legends, and he does...in the nicest possible way.

Its worth getting another Wes DVD. What a star. I never tire of hearing his live music. And what great music, not just from Hamburg. The London recording (from Jazz 625, 1965) is especially good.
Blue Note: A Story Of Modern JazzBlue Note: A Story Of Modern Jazz by Various
Buy new: $25.99
I started my jazz collection with Blue Notes (Ike Quebec's Blue and Sentimental - what a place to start in retropect). I loved the music, the cover photos and the type-face lay-out of the back of the records/CDs. Just like those CDs, this DVD does what it says on the sleeve. Since then, I've strayed far and wide, but there's still nothing quite like putting on a Blue Note.
