![]() | The Beatles (The White Album) by The Beatles
Buy new: $29.99 / Used from: $8.25 Most Beatles fans go with Revolver as #1 but The White Album is not only the most diverse and most ambitious album in the Beatles oeuvre, but it contains John at his most emotional, Paul at his most adventurous, and George delivers "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Savoy Truffle". It all adds up to nothing short of a breathtaking whirlwind.

![]() | Revolver [UK] by The Beatles
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $2.79 The Beatles blend art and pop like no other band before or since on this masterpiece. This album is absolutely essential to any great rock collection.
|
![]() | The Velvet Underground & Nico by The Velvet Underground
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $3.93 Avant-garde music has never sounded so listenable. Lou Reed and John Cale apply their vision of art to rock music with breathtaking results. Challenging yet accessible at the same time, this is one of the five most influential rock albums of all time.
|
![]() | Blonde on Blonde by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $6.88 No album has better lyrics. One of the most consistent double albums of all time, Dylan has never sounded more confident. Not as important as Highway 61 Revisited, but far more entertaining.
|
![]() | Axis: Bold as Love by The Jimi Hendrix Experience
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $5.50 Quite simply, the most underrated album of all time. The sequencing of the songs is perfect and the drumming on "She's So Fine" ranks with the greatest drumming in rock history.
|
![]() | Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $2.50 Paul's vision is in full bloom on this famous masterpiece, but George Martin is the true star here. The production is flawless and cannot be topped, not even by the pristine clarity of the "immortal" Pet Sounds which failed to make my list (a bit TOO emotional for my tastes).
|
![]() | Let It Bleed by The Rolling Stones
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $9.99 This is the kind of album where all the songs put a smile on my face. "Gimme Shelter" and "Monkey Man" are absolutely masterful and rank with the best the Stones have to offer. The band's confidence is on full display here.
|
![]() | Highway 61 Revisited by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $3.79 I have to say something here. I believe this is the most important album of all time because it made everybody try harder. However, the album just doesn't entertain me the way the previous seven albums on the list do. Having said that, my ears think that "Like a Rolling Stone" is the greatest rock song of all time.
|
![]() | Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $7.64 Perhaps the most original album ever made, Trout Mask Replica is a challenging and rewarding masterpiece that demands attention.
|
![]() | Strange Days by The Doors
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.99 In my opinion, the most consistent Doors album. Most of it sounds like carnival music, which is just fine by me, but the dark ambition of the band is fully realized here. "Love Me Two Times" contains one of classic rock's greatest riffs and "Moonlight Drive" is one of Morrison's finest songs.
