David Copperfield (Everyman's Library)David Copperfield (Everyman's Library) by Charles Dickens
Buy new: $17.16 / Used from: $0.01
Loved it. Although it takes its time, it was never boring, and the characters, the humor, and the general good-naturedness of the book made it extremely enjoyable. Contains perhaps the best and most convincing account of childhood I've ever read. Highly recommended.
Great Expectations (Everyman's Library)Great Expectations (Everyman's Library) by Charles Dickens
Buy new: $16.50 / Used from: $1.17
Loved this one too. It moved a little faster than David Copperfield and was a little shorter, so it was an easier read, but the scope of the story wasn't quite as sweeping. The best part of this one for me was watching Pip's character change and grow, and I also really enjoyed Jaggers, Wemmick, Joe, and Magwitch - classic characters. Highly recommended.
For Whom the Bell Tolls (Scribner Classics)For Whom the Bell Tolls (Scribner Classics) by Ernest Hemingway
Buy new: $20.45 / Used from: $10.94
It took me a little while to get into it because the dialogue seemed strange at first, but once I realized that Hemingway was using English to convey the feel of Spanish, I really enjoyed it. Basically, I read it as a critique of individual, political, and national reasons for going to war and as a reminder that there are human beings on both sides of any conflict.
Crime and PunishmentCrime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky
Buy new: $11.53 / Used from: $2.07
It took me about forty or fifty pages to get comfortable with the russian names, but after that this was a page-turner: feverish and intense, with characters who felt absolutely real. To me, it's an argument for the reality of morality, the consequences of inhumanity in terms of isolation and guilt, and the redemptive power of love and engagement with others.
Pride and Prejudice (Everyman's Library)Pride and Prejudice (Everyman's Library) by Jane Austen
Buy new: $13.85 / Used from: $0.07
I enjoyed this one much more than I thought I would. The characters are extremely well done and memorable, and the plot is engaging. I sort of knew the outcome going into it, but Elizabeth's journey from detesting to admiring Mr. Darcey was more convincing than I expected. The book also portrays what is, for me, an interesting lifestyle and time period. Pleasantly surprised.
The Inimitable Jeeves (The Collector's Wodehouse)The Inimitable Jeeves (The Collector's Wodehouse) by P.G. Wodehouse
Buy new: $12.89 / Used from: $10.19
This is essentially the first Jeeves collection of short stories. It's not quite as consistent overall as Carry On, Jeeves - but the highlights were hilarious. My favorites were as follows: The Pride of the Woosters is Wounded & The Hero’s Reward...Introducing Claude and Eustace & Sir Roderick Comes to Lunch...and Bingo and the Little Woman & All’s Well.
Carry On, Jeeves (A Jeeves and Bertie Novel)Carry On, Jeeves (A Jeeves and Bertie Novel) by P. G. Wodehouse
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $9.49
Hilarious...a joy to read. I thoroughly enjoyed each story, but my favorites were as follows: Jeeves Takes Charge...Jeeves and the Unbidden Guest...The Rummy Affair of Old Biffy...Without the Option...and Bertie Changes His Mind.
Very Good, Jeeves!Very Good, Jeeves! by P.G. Wodehouse
Buy new: $12.89 / Used from: $8.81
Also hilarious and a joy to read...probably the funniest and most consistent of the Jeeves short-story collections. My favorites were: Jeeves and the Impending Doom...Jeeves and the Yule-Tide Spirit...The Spot of Art....Jeeves and the Kid Clementina...The Love that Purifies...and Jeeves and the Old School Chum.
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Book 3)Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Book 3) by J.K. Rowling
Buy new: $14.61 / Used from: $0.42
Probably the most entertaining reading experience I've ever had. I only read the first Potter book because my wife begged me, but then I tore through the rest of them in less than two weeks. This is the one that took the series to a whole new level, and this is my third time reading it.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Book 6)Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Book 6) by J.K. Rowling
Buy new: $9.35 / Used from: $3.37
Another amazing and wildly entertaining installment of the Harry Potter series. I've read it three times and continue to enjoy it.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7)Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7) by J.K. Rowling
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $8.61
A wonderful ending to my favorite series of all time, and just as fun to read the second time around as it was the first (I read it so fast the first time that I could barely remeber what happened).
Portuguese Irregular VerbsPortuguese Irregular Verbs by Alexander Mccall Smith
Buy new: $8.60 / Used from: $0.79
A wonderful introduction to the world of Professor Dr. von Igelfeld, a stuffy philologist who embarks on a number of absurd and hilarious adventures.
The Finer Points of Sausage DogsThe Finer Points of Sausage Dogs by Alexander McCall Smith
Buy new: $8.60 / Used from: $0.44
This is the second of the Professor Dr. von Igelfeld entertainments, and probably the best. A couple of scenes and many of the one-liners in this book are among the funniest I've ever encountered in fiction. Immerses you in a very unique point of view. Highly recommended.
At the Villa of Reduced CircumstancesAt the Villa of Reduced Circumstances by Alexander Mccall Smith
Buy new: $8.64 / Used from: $0.37
This is the third and final Professor Dr. von Igelfeld entertainment. It's probably my least favorite of the bunch, but still very enjoyable.
A Thousand Splendid SunsA Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $2.70
Not quite as addictive as the Kite Runner, but maybe better overall. The Kite Runner's plot was a little too tidy for me, whereas this one felt more like real life. It was depressing at times (most of the time, actually), but the characters were endearing, and for me the ending was poignant and uplifting.
SpudSpud by John van de Ruit
Buy used from: $0.01
It started off a little slow, but I ended up enjoying it. It's basically the journal of a fourteen-year-old kid's first year at a boarding school in South Africa in the early nineties. Imaginative and interesting.
Oliver Twist (Everyman's Library)Oliver Twist (Everyman's Library) by Charles Dickens
Buy new: $14.96 / Used from: $2.35
This is the third Dickens book I've read so far. It was okay, but I didn't like it nearly as much as David Copperfield or Great Expectations.
World Without EndWorld Without End by Ken Follett
Buy new: $14.96 / Used from: $5.62
I enjoyed World Without End - and it kept me up reading at night - but I liked Pillars of the Earth better. For me, this one felt too much like a medieval soap opera, plus it didn't have quite as much substance, and some of the characters are so modern in their viewpoints that it doesn't really feel like a historical novel. Fun to read, but not fully satisfying.
Duma Key: A NovelDuma Key: A Novel by Stephen King
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $0.01
It was interesting at times (especially in the middle), and it was a little spooky at times (especially as the middle transitioned into the end), but I thought the ending wasn't all that satisfying.
Blaze: A NovelBlaze: A Novel by Richard Bachman
Buy used from: $0.01
To me this one was an interesting mixture of Dashiell Hammett, Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, and the Cohen Brothers' Raising Arizona - (a nice idea, but not nearly as good as any of the above...still somewhat entertaining).
Slapstick or Lonesome No More!: A NovelSlapstick or Lonesome No More!: A Novel by Kurt Vonnegut
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $4.84
Good but not great. On one hand, it was enjoyable: creative, interesting, quick, and sometimes funny or thought-provoking. But it wasn't structured very well, and it took some getting used to. Main idea: human relationships and circumstances (countries, families, technologies, etc.) are mostly arbitrary, so they shouldn't divide us: what really matters is treating each other with common decency.
Eclipse (The Twilight Saga, Book 3)Eclipse (The Twilight Saga, Book 3) by Stephenie Meyer
Buy new: $11.69 / Used from: $4.49
I'm reading this series at my wife's request, and to me this one is similar to the rest of them: an easy and quick read that's sometimes entertaining and sometimes extremely annoying. I can see why these books are so popular, but at the same time I'm sure a lot of people would not be able to stomach them. This one was probably my favorite of the bunch.
The Last Olympian (Percy Jackson & the Olympians, Book 5)The Last Olympian (Percy Jackson & the Olympians, Book 5) by Rick Riordan
Buy new: $9.71 / Used from: $7.97
A satisfying conclusion to a very good series in the young adult fantasy genre. I'm sad to see this one end, although it seems Riordan left a window open for a follow up series.
Grip of the Shadow Plague (Fablehaven)Grip of the Shadow Plague (Fablehaven) by Brandon Mull
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $4.44
Like the rest of the Fablehaven books (this is the third), it was fun to read (especially good for for kids). The entire series has a lot of imagination and innocence, and Seth and Kendra are strong characters.
Fahrenheit 451 (Wheeler Large Print Book Series)Fahrenheit 451 (Wheeler Large Print Book Series) by Ray Bradbury
Buy new: $23.35 / Used from: $15.49
Not nearly as good as I hoped. Basically, I agree with the general idea that we're becoming a superficial society that values mindless entertainment and distraction, but his way of making this point didn't resonate with me. Also, his writing style is too overwrought for my tastes.
Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the WestWicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire
Buy new: $11.52 / Used from: $0.01
On the one hand, this was an imaginative and intelligent read. On the other hand, I thought it was pretentious and uneven at times, and the plot didn’t flow very well – some parts were interesting, others were boring.
