On my Listmanias:INSPIRATIONAL FILMS and BURIED TREASURES. Mitchum just as good a Philip Marlowe as was Bogart. You'll always remember Moose and his Velma. Great scenes in this film. Soon after, they tried a remake of The Big Sleep with Mitchum as Marlowe again. It was awful. Why mess with a classic?

A southern soap opera but a good story. It's the kind of movie where you want to tell the whole plot to a friend, boring him/her to death. George Peppard, whom I've never paid much attention to, is very good.

Impressively directed by Charles Laughton. Mitchum plays a psychotic preacher.

Like 'Night of the Hunter', Mitchum plays the bad guy, and well of course.

Mitchum was a disheartening choice for the role as the cuckolded school teacher. Sure a departure from type. I guess one could argue it was a 'broadening' role.

Follows the affairs of the amoral Maria, one of which is with Mitchum.

Both an in-joke and a tribute as Mitchum, the villain in the original film, is given a minor role in this quality remake.
