The Sixth Sense (Collector's Edition Series)The Sixth Sense (Collector's Edition Series)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $2.00
(A-) The Shyamalan backlash may never end, but I'm not buying into it. This is a superb supernatural horror film in absolutely all respects.
Race With the DevilRace With the Devil
Buy used from: $24.99
(B-) In spite of the silly title this is a fairly staid, seriously minded satanic cult horror movie, with some action scenes added on. This one has an unexpectedly good cast, though the characterization of the women is fairly condescending, and I'm the last guy to complain about such things.
Southern ComfortSouthern Comfort
Buy used from: $13.50
(B-) This tale of some foolish National Guardsman running afoul of a group of largely unseen cajuns takes too long to get going, but it hits nicely once it does, and has some effective visuals.
Salvador (Special Edition)Salvador (Special Edition)
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $2.21
(B) Stone's sprawling film about civil war in El Salvador and the US response often lacks focus, but it rarely lacks energy and intensity. Woods is excellent in the lead as a cynical, amoral and fast-talking journalist. Too bad some of the subplots don't work at all.
The BeguiledThe Beguiled
Buy used from: $14.55
(B+) This fairly obscure Siegel/Eastwood film is something of a forgotten gem. It's a rarity, a southern gothic film. It may seem like nothing more than period melodrama initially but, true to the genre, things get very, very bad and twisted by the end.
Hardware [VHS]Hardware [VHS]
Buy used from: $0.74
(B+) "Hardware" is pretty much pieced together from all the major sci-fi movies from the late 70's and 80's, but it's an effective rehash with controlled, inventive direction, powerful visuals and a cool monster in the MARK 13 robot.
Insomnia - Criterion CollectionInsomnia - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $24.99 / Used from: $9.95
(B-) This Norwegian crime thriller reminds of another european thriller "The Vanishing", because it's a killer-thriller that approaches the story in a cold, cerebral way. Too much so, in fact, and it ultimately proves too flat and lifeless, even as it has a clever, well-constructed plot.
Aguirre, the Wrath of GodAguirre, the Wrath of God
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $7.57
(B) Visually impressive and made under ardurous circumstances, though the story is mostly only moderately compelling, up until the harrowing finale. I don't see Kinski genius, though. He's good, but nothing more.
Midnight ExpressMidnight Express
Buy used from: $1.99
(B) A bit long, but still an intense, well-crafted prison drama. Just don't be expecting a documentary on the Turkish prison system.
Stalker: A Film by Andrei TarkovskyStalker: A Film by Andrei Tarkovsky
Buy new: $25.49 / Used from: $20.49
(B-) Nominally sci-fi, but this is really a glacially-paced, philosophically concerned art film. It has more than enough interesting ideas and effective scenes to recommend it, but its pretentious manner grows wearying as the film progresses. To steal a line from Kim Newman, Stalker proves that a film can be interesting and boring at the same time.
Zatoichi the Blind Swordsman, Vol. 5 - On the RoadZatoichi the Blind Swordsman, Vol. 5 - On the Road
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $9.99
(B) More of the same, of course, but perhaps the best one yet, not that there is much separating the various films.
Born on the Fourth of July (Special Edition)Born on the Fourth of July (Special Edition)
Buy used from: $2.08
(C) The first hour sucks and is a long cliche fest. Once it stops being the grand fable of Vietnam and becomes Kovic's story it gets more interesting, particularly in its unglamorized portrayl of the hippies. Still, it can't erase the bad beginning, and we never understand Kovic's mind: He's still a hawk for years after his injury, then, one day, he's a hippie. Why? We dunno.
Death Race 2000 - Special EditionDeath Race 2000 - Special Edition
Buy used from: $18.00
(A-) This movie rules, simple as that.
Double Indemnity (Universal Legacy Series)Double Indemnity (Universal Legacy Series)
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $15.73
(A) A classic, sharply plotted and extremely bleak film noir. Must-see stuff.
SecondsSeconds
Buy used from: $24.79
(B+) An underappreciated effort from director Frankenheimer. The whole sci-fi concept of trading your old identity for a new, better, younger one wasn't new even then, but they do it well, and it has a delightfully bleak ending.
Coffin Joe - Awakening of the BeastCoffin Joe - Awakening of the Beast
Buy used from: $10.00
(-) This is, literally, the worst piece of crap I've ever seen. I'd give it an F, but that's an insult to any other movie I've given an F. Imagine the worst porno, the worst art film, the worst horror film and the worst drug-trip movie, all combined, and you've got a slight taste of this. Only a taste though: mortal imagination cannot conceive of the horror of this movie.
The ConversationThe Conversation
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $4.58
(B+) Hackman is truly excellent in this drama about a cautious, isolated surveillance man. It has the elements of a classic, but falls short due to the overly slow pacing in the first half.
The Man Who Wasn't ThereThe Man Who Wasn't There
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $4.99
(B) Perhaps the weirdest Coen film, and that's saying something. It's a bit slow and doesn't all quite fit together, but it has enough of the their oddball genius and gorgeous cinematography to make it worth while.
JFK - Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition)JFK - Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy used from: $7.60
(B+) Technically/Visually brilliant and always watchable, yet it strains under the weight of its own bullcrap. "JFK" has a trillion lies in it, ignoring testimony, ballistics, common sense etc. Some excuse Stone, saying it's not a documentary. True, but "JFK" is meant to promote conspiracy theories about JFK, and Stone lies to do so. Sorry, LHO acted alone -- and this is propaganda.
The Man Who Shot Liberty ValanceThe Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
Buy used from: $3.97
(B) I'm more of Leone and later kinda guy when it comes to westerns, but there were some good ones before then, and this is one of them. A bit slow, but it has an excellent cast.
Wall Street (20th Anniversary Edition)Wall Street (20th Anniversary Edition)
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $6.00
(B-) Well-made and well acted, but it suffers from a subject matter that just doesn't appeal to me all that much. Douglas does give his definitive performance here, though, no doubt.
Coffin Joe - At Midnight I'll Take Your SoulCoffin Joe - At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul
Buy used from: $25.00
(B) After the seeing hideousness that was Marin's "Awakening of the Beast", "At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul" proves to be a surprisingly endearing debut effort from him. It's euro-gothic horror, Brazilian style. Pretty campy at times, but Coffin Joe is an entertaining villain and it manages to be genuinely dramatic at the climax.
The Devil's RainThe Devil's Rain
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $7.45
(B-) Yet another 70's satanic cult movie. Starts out straight but it becomes extremely campy in the second half. Still, I just like this sorta movie, and it has some nice cinematography and an amusing cast. (Shatner, Tom Skeritt, and Ernest Borgnine (as the head of the cult!)) I hope you like goo, cause that's what you're gonna get with "The Devil's Rain".
The Long Good FridayThe Long Good Friday
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $6.95
(B+) A dreary British gangster film about a cockney mob boss who finds his gang under attack one Easter weekend for unknown reasons by an unknown opponent. Hoskins is great in this as the central mobster, the sorta role he was born to play.
Solaris - Criterion CollectionSolaris - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $30.99 / Used from: $17.95
(B+) Tarkovsky's famed sci-fi epic is, unsurprisingly, a bit on the slow side, but it's the thoughtful, philosophically interesting work.
Platoon - 20th Anniversary Collector's Edition (Widescreen)Platoon - 20th Anniversary Collector's Edition (Widescreen)
Buy new: $15.49 / Used from: $4.48
(A-) Still Stone's best film, and unlikely to be topped, what with him having lost his mind and all. A bit skewed and heavyhanded, like all of his films, but not so gravely so that it detracts much. Contains the definitive turns from Sheen, Berenger and Defoe.
Coffin Joe - This Night I'll Possess Your CorpseCoffin Joe - This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse
Buy used from: $39.95
(B+) Fairly rad follow up to "At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul" which improves on the original on almost all fronts. (It is a bit unfocused, unlike the original, and could be trimmed a bit.) The goofy, Bava-gone-totally-mad hell sequence is especially entertaining.
Sudden ImpactSudden Impact
Buy used from: $1.10
(B) Another entertaining, if not altogether remarkable "Dirty Harry" film. Good action and Eastwood is cool as usual, though the plot is a bit pieced together and disorganized.
Nosferatu: The Vampyre/Phantom Der Nacht (2 Disc Set)Nosferatu: The Vampyre/Phantom Der Nacht (2 Disc Set)
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $13.13
(B-) Herzog's art-horror remake maintains the general manner of the original despite being a color/sound film from the late 70's. More admirable than entertaining, perhaps, but worth a watch, and it's nice to see any vampire film which eschews the whole tortured/romantic angle that has been so prevalent in recent decades.
Perfume - The Story Of A MurdererPerfume - The Story Of A Murderer
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $4.15
(B) This has unquestionably the most bizarre plot of any big-budget movie I've ever seen and has impressively detailed and controlled direction from Twyker. Too bad it contains some missteps, like a lot of pointless narration and an excess of exposition. The 20 minutes have to be seen to be believed, though.
Burnt OfferingsBurnt Offerings
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $3.57
(B-) Fairly standard haunted house film, but it's consistently entertaining in a campy-creepy way, as you'd expect from Curtis and this particular cast. Karen Black once again proves that she has the rubberiest face of any actress from her generation.
Street TrashStreet Trash
Buy new: $23.49 / Used from: $17.25
(D) This self-consciously tasteless gore comedy contains nary a laugh and sucky gore. It's quite professionally made for such a project, but it's all a waste. The filmmakers seem to think that if they approach potentially offensive material in a flippant manner it will automatically be funny. This is not the case.
Shadow of the VampireShadow of the Vampire
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $6.54
(B) Ultra-bizarre film positing that Max Shreck, star of "Nosferatu", was a real vampire. It's mostly a sort of satire of egomania on the part of directors and film stars. It drags slightly even at it's brief length, but it's novel enough to be worth a watch.
Kingdom Of The SpidersKingdom Of The Spiders
Buy used from: $6.94
(C) Shatner makes an entertaining hero and this isn't as amateurish and cheap as most killer animal movies. Trouble is, spiders don't do much for me. It doesn't help that the spiders are terrible actors: they don't seem interested in eating anyone. I also note that the protagonists board up their windows against the spiders. What the hell kinda sense does that make?
The Host (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)The Host (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $2.39
(B+) Fun horror/comedy/adventure/monster movie from S. Korea. Has a surprising amount of heart and unexpectedly good CGI.
Shallow GraveShallow Grave
Buy used from: $10.84
(B) Tense, nasty and very stylish debut feature from Danny Boyle. It's another Blood Simple/A Simple Plan "regular people get caught up in crime" kinda film. It has one notable flaw: the protagonists aren't appealing, which cuts identification down a lot.
Memories of MurderMemories of Murder
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $6.23
(B) Low-key, largely realistic police procedural concerning the first known Korean serial killer. Slow building, but effective. Reminds of the more recent "Zodiac".
Bullitt (Two-Disc Special Edition)Bullitt (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $8.66 / Used from: $7.50
(B+) Very cool early "lone-wolf cop" movie. McQueen is one rad mofo in spite of his various sweaters, and the major car chase is quite good, and I'm not generally much for car chases.
