Blonde Crazy [VHS]Blonde Crazy [VHS]
Buy used from: $44.98
Joan Blondell & James Cagney starred in seven films together, but this 1931 film was one of the few where they were both in the lead. Too bad, since they had great chemistry together and were the definitive precode couple. Here Cagney is an aspiring con-artist and he and Blondell take to the road in search of deep pockets to pick.

A poster for 1933's "Hard To Handle", one of Cagney's precodes that never made it to DVD or VHS. A very fun film with Cagney as an ad man who is after a girl with a gold-digging mother.

This 1934 film is important for 2 reasons: the first teaming of Cagney with Pat O'Brien and the fact that it was shot at San Diego Naval station with Cagney & O'Brien assigned to the U.S.S. Arizona. Many of the extras are the actual crew of that doomed ship. For historical reasons alone it should be on DVD, plus it's a good buddy film.
Devil Dogs of the Air [VHS]Devil Dogs of the Air [VHS]
Buy used from: $8.70
In 1935 this film signifies the trouble that many pre-code actors & actresses had in transitioning to respectable roles. This has Cagney as a wiseguy in the air. The entire film is uninspiring, though Cagney tries his best with mediocre material.

Cagney after the code: 1935's G-Men has Cagney in law enforcement. 1939's Each Dawn I Die has Cagney as a journalist who is framed for ferreting out corruption. 1940's "City For Conquest" has Cagney as a boxer whose career ends in tragedy.
A Midsummer Night's DreamA Midsummer Night's Dream
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $8.61
Made in 1935, this is a real departure for Cagney. All of the Warner contract players show up here with odd but effective results. Cagney plays Bottom, a man with a roving eye. The real star of this film, though, is a very young Mickey Rooney.
Ceiling Zero [VHS]Ceiling Zero [VHS]

1936 film has Cagney portraying a pilot responsible for delivering the mail despite the weather. Pat O'Brien is in charge of the airport and Cagney's pal, and June Travis is the young pilot that Cagney falls for. Cagney starts out irresponsible, but he learns his lesson. A very good film.
Great GuyGreat Guy
Buy new: $7.98 / Used from: $2.24
Cagney made this in 1936 while feuding with Warner's over his contract. It's a pretty good crime drama with Cagney as the good guy ferreting out corruption at the Bureau of Weights and Measures.
Something to Sing About (1937)Something to Sing About (1937)
Buy new: $9.99
The second film Cagney made while away from Warners. This is a musical comedy that is better than most you'll find in the public domain, mainly because of Cagney himself.
Boy Meets Girl [VHS]Boy Meets Girl [VHS]
Buy used from: $2.99
A fast-paced manic 1938 comedy about a couple of Hollywood script writers played by Cagney and Pat O'Brien. Good enough, but this one has much more energy than laughs.
The Oklahoma Kid [VHS]The Oklahoma Kid [VHS]
Buy used from: $14.00
This 1939 western has Cagney and Bogart turning in their urban environment for the American frontier. However, they are still the same two tough characters. Great western camp from two of my favorite tough guys.

In 1942 Cagney finally got the role that broke him free of playing strictly gangsters & got him out from under the thumb of Jack Warner for good. He wins the Best Actor Oscar as George M. Cohen. Cohen watched the film & liked it, but asked afterward "Who was that film about?" Obviously, some of the biographical facts got lost in the script.
Johnny Come Lately [VHS]Johnny Come Lately [VHS]

Cagney shows up in one of John Ford's war comedies in 1952. The posturing Ford has Cagney doing just doesn't work as well as Cagney's normal hands-on physical style. Part of the Ford at Fox set.
Lion Is in the Streets [VHS]Lion Is in the Streets [VHS]

James Cagney shines as a charming but corrupt rural politician trying to deceive the voters in this 1953 film. Barbara Hale is great as his sweet wife who is clueless about how dishonest her husband really is. It isn't Cagney's best film, but it is entertaining, and the performances are excellent. Available on DVD on demand via Warner Archives at WBShop.com.

Except for the Colorado scenery, this 1956 film is not your standard Western. The emphasis is on character rather than action. James Cagney plays a tough rancher who is actually not such a bad man. There is also a love triangle and a very good supporting cast.

Man of a Thousand FacesMan of a Thousand Faces

In 1957 Cagney gave perhaps his finest performance in a mature role. He plays Lon Chaney. The two don't look alike at all, but he does a great job of capturing the struggles the man had in his personal life.
Never Steal Anything Small [VHS]Never Steal Anything Small [VHS]

This odd little 1959 film is a story of labor union graft and corruption set to music. One of Cagney's few misfires, in my humble opinion.
Shake Hands With the Devil [VHS]Shake Hands With the Devil [VHS]
Buy used from: $34.49
This 1959 film is set in 1920 Ireland. Cagney gives an understated performance as a college professor who is an IRA activist by night. Don Murray plays the Irish American idealist caught in the middle & in love with an IRA hostage. Captures brilliantly the passions and emotion of the Irish Question, & the scene at Dublin docks is one of the best action sequences ever on film.
Gallant Hours [VHS]Gallant Hours [VHS]
Buy used from: $11.93
An episodic biography of Admiral William "Bull" Halsey during the early days of the Second World War while he was the naval theater commander for the Guadalcanal campaign. Cagney is superb in this very unusual war film without combat footage, relying instead on character development & the intensity of interpersonal relationships to tell its story.

The last film Cagney made before his initial retirement. Cagney plays an executive in Berlin who is trying to keep his boss' daughter from marrying a Communist. The pace is frantic and the humor is very Cold War.
