The ACME Novelty Library #16The ACME Novelty Library #16 by Chris Ware

I've never seen anything of such thoughtful and meticulous perfection in my life. The Building Cities stories blow my mind!
Kramers Ergot 7Kramers Ergot 7 by Sammy Harkham
Buy new: $125.00 / Used from: $183.90
Probably the coolest comic I've ever seen. Perfect document of today's comic avant-guard. Pretty much every page is done by a different artist. On a more personal note, it continues the Building Cities story that starts in Acme Novelty Library #16, which is a personal favorite story for me.
Jaka's Story (Cerebus, Volume 5)Jaka's Story (Cerebus, Volume 5) by Dave Sim
Buy new: $19.80 / Used from: $14.99
This chapter of the Cerebus story can stand alone and doesn't need to be read along any of the other stories, however the entire series gets my highest recomendation. This series still holds the title for the longest running, independently produced comic series.
Hey, Wait...Hey, Wait... by Jason
Buy new: $10.36 / Used from: $5.25
It's amazing and completely entrancing from the beginning, but by the end of the first half, everything changes and it goes off in a completely different direction. Interestingly somber and emotionless art that conveys so much emotional depth in its tone.
A Child's Life and Other StoriesA Child's Life and Other Stories by Phoebe Gloeckner

A child's story... not for children. Deals heavily with childhood sexual abuse and drug abuse.
Gods' Man: A Novel in WoodcutsGods' Man: A Novel in Woodcuts by Lynd Ward

Some of the first comics were wordless woodcut picture- novels made in Germany during the depression in the 20s and this is my personal favorite of what I've seen.
The ArrivalThe Arrival by Shaun Tan

Completely wordless absolutely amazing story about being an immigrant into a new world wildly unlike anything you've ever seen before.
The Hollow GroundsThe Hollow Grounds by Luc Schuiten
Buy used from: $35.00
A collection of French comic short stories from a well known French author. I've heard that the English reprint is much lower quality than the originals, but I still thought it was stuning.
Hidden WorldHidden World by Jon Strongbow
Awesome Seattle artist who sells his comics on the street in Pike Place. My favorite of what I've read is called "The Ocean of Time" which is available online from www.jonstrongbow.com/
CagesCages by Dave McKean

A comic epic from the same fellow who did the covers to Neil Gaiman's Sandman series. Reminds me of the movie Waking Life, except this first came out about 10 years earlier.
Through the HabitrailsThrough the Habitrails by Jeff Nicholson
Buy used from: $6.00
Surrealism at its best. Stories about corporate oppression and the enslavement of everyday life. Tons of Multi-layered symbolism makes this one of the coolest little gems I've found lately.
The Nightly NewsThe Nightly News by Jonathan Hickman
Buy new: $11.55 / Used from: $6.00
Busting onto the scene with a completely unique story in voice and style. His newest, Transhuman, I also really liked.
Stray ToastersStray Toasters
Buy used from: $12.95
This was both written and illustrated by Bill and is a pretty difficult read but so rewarding if you can make it all the way.
The Complete Essex County Hardcover EditionThe Complete Essex County Hardcover Edition by Jeff Lemire
Buy new: $32.97 / Used from: $28.66
One of the most exciting new writer/artists to break into comics since I started really reading. I'm very excited to see more from Jeff Lemire.

Buy used from: $9.95
Graphic narrative experimentation at its best!
The FilthThe Filth by Grant Morrison
Buy new: $13.59 / Used from: $8.69
At first simply flabbergasting, but the smallest scenes from this can really stand out to show the possibilities of comics while continuing to haunt you, waking or dreaming.
100%100% by Paul Pope
Buy new: $26.39 / Used from: $21.25
So far this is the only thing I've read from Paul Pope and its absolutely fabulous. I can't wait to read more.
The Adventures Of Luther ArkwrightThe Adventures Of Luther Arkwright by Bryan Talbot
Buy new: $12.89 / Used from: $10.89
Completely masterful art and a story so dense, it deserves your complete attention for about a week to fully understand and appreciate it. Don't rush this one, it likes to be read slowly.

Awesome old Japanese comic short stories from a previously unknown master of the form. This is the third of these archival books and it is my favorite so far, but the others (The Push Man and Other Stories, Abandon the Old in Tokyo) were both great as well.
When the Wind BlowsWhen the Wind Blows by Raymond Briggs
Buy new: $10.40 / Used from: $7.82
Often not thought of as a comic artist, Briggs' books are usually sold as children's stories, but in this case that couldn't be much farther from the truth.

The acclaimed, but still little known first graphic novel from newcomer Zak Sally.

Voodoo Child: The Illustrated Legend of Jimi Hendrix (Penguin Studio Books)Voodoo Child: The Illustrated Legend of Jimi Hendrix (Penguin Studio Books) by Martin I. Green
Buy used from: $4.75
I think this is the best work I've seen from Bill Sienkiewicz. His style is so apparent here, but while maintaining a really clear story told in large part though song lyrics and quoted sections from Hendrix' private journals. This also comes with a CD of home recordings.
Percy GloomPercy Gloom by Cathy Malkasian

This collects tons of shorter Will Eisner stories, many of them as short as one page. All of them symbolize an aspect of city life.
