In 1873, a group of white men descended upon the town hall in Colfax, LA, while it was occupied by black defenders. In the ensuing chaos, over 150 blacks were killed. The US Attorney charged the defendants with violating their civil rights. The US Supreme Court ruled that federal courts did not have jurisdiction, and that the murders were a state matter.
