![]() | THX 1138 - The Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $2.67 An excellent first and little known film by the man who would bring the world Star Wars. In this orderly Dystopia, people are controlled by drugs and strictly enforced laws. One man, THX 1138, is nudged from the comfortable mindless haze of this world when he finds himself facing the unexpected terror and exhilaration of forbidden passionate love.

![]() | Naqoyqatsi
Buy new: $18.49 / Used from: $7.25 Dystopia "now" from Godfrey Reggio depicting the shift from a world organized by the principles of nature to one dominated by technology, the synthetic and the virtual. Extremes of intimacy and spectacle, tragedy and hope fuse in a tidal wave of visuals and music (Phillip Glass) , giving rise to a unique, artistic experience that reflects the vision of a brave new globalized world.

![]() | Nineteen Eighty-Four [Region 2]
Buy used from: $24.38 A good adaptation of the book. An impossible love story in the world of Big Brother. John Hurt is excellent.
![]() | Soylent Green
Buy used from: $5.99 The wrath of extreme overpopulation. Set in New York, population 40,000,000. Soylent green is the answer to epidemic hunger and starvation - the perfect solution? Charleston Heston is the protagonist.
![]() | The Ultimate Matrix Collection (The Matrix/ The Matrix Reloaded/ The Matrix Revolutions/ The Animatrix)
Buy used from: $23.79 An outstanding cinematic presentation (3 movies) of a future where machines/technology have taken control of the planet and humans are plugged into an ostensibly perfect virtual world, completely unaware of reality. Extensive philosophical symbolism pervades. The box set comes with many extras including animated short films and discussions about the philosophical influences in the script.
![]() | Brazil - The Criterion Collection - (Single Disc Editon)
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $12.37 Dark and Pythonesque humour envelops this love story in a future where prisoners are billed for their own torture costs. Superb movie. Excellent cast including a small part by Robert De Niro.
![]() | Blade Runner - The Director's Cut (Remastered Limited Edition)
Buy used from: $1.47 Ground breaking film making by the legendary Ridley Scott (Alien, etc..). Cinematically current 28 years later..without CGI. In a future dismal Los Angeles where 5 desperate androids set to be terminated must be tracked down. Loosely based on "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep". Definitely see the special features on this DVD... this movie almost never made it to the theatres. An amazing story.
![]() | Alphaville - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $25.49 / Used from: $12.89 coming soon
![]() | Logan's Run
Buy used from: $2.50 Another old classic... not the best movie but is obligatory for dystopians. In this future post apocalyptic society, what is left of society is contained within the safety of a big dome. The emphasis, similar to Brave New World, is unadulterated play and physical comfort/pleasure. The catch.... is you are only allowed to live for 30 years!
![]() | The Omega Man
Buy used from: $6.51 coming soon.
![]() | The Time Machine
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $9.01 Based on the H.G. Wells book that was way ahead of it's time... (sorry!!). The movie is dated but very enjoyable nevertheless.
![]() | Fahrenheit 451
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $3.98 Not a particularly great cinematic adaptation of the classic Ray Bradbury book. However, I enjoyed it and it is required viewing for any connoisseur of the dystopian genre.
![]() | Koyaanisqatsi - Life Out of Balance
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.85 Dystopia...now. Incredible imagery and music woven together illustrating the beauty of our world, the encroaching ugliness created by humanity and the loss of dignity and human identity resulting from overpopulation and crowding.
![]() | Zardoz
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $4.15 Bizarre post apocalyptic 2 tier society. This is most certainly one of the strangest roles Sean Connery has ever played. Some of the female Connery fans might want to watch this solely to check out Mr Bond's unusual attire.
![]() | Sleeper
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $5.31 Purely satirical and nutty film set in the future... classic early Woody.
![]() | Code 46
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $1.83 I enjoyed this modern depiction of a geographically segregated future society, one under the thumb of the other. An unlikely romance develops between an investigator from the dominant class with one of his suspects in a segregated part of the world.
![]() | Planet of the Apes (Widescreen 35th Anniversary Edition)
Buy new: $24.49 / Used from: $3.85 Another indelible classic. Oddly, even though the facial prosthetics and make up are now dated... I much prefer them, and the original movie, to the recent remake. A post-apocalyptic dystopia with a twist... our primate "ancestors" are the dominant species. Be nice to the primates....
![]() | Children of Men (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $1.70 Superb film making. Humans become globally infertile, countries collapse one after another leaving the UK barely standing but tearing itself apart from the inside out. The director religiously stuck to long single takes while filming this movie. It gives it a bit of an unpolished feel, which is nice. Ask yourself... is the ping pong ball real... or CGI..?
![]() | Westworld
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $5.99 Not exactly dystopic in the broader sense. An example of when android technology turns the tables on unsuspecting human joy seekers. I, Robot without the 3 laws.
![]() | Lord of the Flies - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $30.49 / Used from: $9.19 One of my favourite books as a kid. The movie doesn't have quite the impact as the book.
![]() | H. R. Giger's Necronomicon by H. R. Giger
Buy new: $43.79 / Used from: $11.75 More blending of human biology and technology in a way that only Giger's beautifully twisted mind can imagine. Is this the fate of Mankind?
![]() | H. R. Giger's Necronomicon II by H. R. Giger
Buy new: $46.90 / Used from: $12.27 If you want more of Giger's biomechanical visions of the future, here you go.
![]() | 2112 by Rush
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $3.79 Neil Peart and band had a Rand phase starting with Fly By Night, peaking in 2112 and eventually dissipated by the Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures albums. The title song in 2112 focuses on a citizen of a future dystopia where all history has been erased. An accidental discovery of a guitar leads to his "awakening" which inevitably leads to a clash with the authorities...
![]() | Brain Salad Surgery by Emerson Lake & Palmer

![]() | Joe's Garage: Acts I, II & III by Frank Zappa
Buy used from: $14.89 Sardonic, sarcastic, satirical, irreverant, stupid and genius... Zappa.
![]() | From Here To Dystopia
Buy used from: $4.99 Heavy Metal album with a Dystopia theme.
![]() | The Grand Illusion by Styx
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $3.30 Themes of Dystopia Now. Excellent rock record for the times that was popular and was succinct in stating the obviousness of contemporary humanity.
