An excellent first and little known film by the man who would bring the world Star Wars. In this orderly Dystopia, people are controlled by drugs and strictly enforced laws. One man, THX 1138, is nudged from the comfortable mindless haze of this world when he finds himself facing the unexpected terror and exhilaration of forbidden passionate love.

A good adaptation of the book. An impossible love story in the world of Big Brother. John Hurt is excellent.

An outstanding cinematic presentation (3 movies) of a future where machines/technology have taken control of the planet and humans are plugged into an ostensibly perfect virtual world, completely unaware of reality. Extensive philosophical symbolism pervades. The box set comes with many extras including animated short films and discussions about the philosophical influences in the script.

Ground breaking film making by the legendary Ridley Scott (Alien, etc..). Cinematically current 28 years later..without CGI. In a future dismal Los Angeles where 5 desperate androids set to be terminated must be tracked down. Loosely based on "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep". Definitely see the special features on this DVD... this movie almost never made it to the theatres. An amazing story.

Another old classic... not the best movie but is obligatory for dystopians. In this future post apocalyptic society, what is left of society is contained within the safety of a big dome. The emphasis, similar to Brave New World, is unadulterated play and physical comfort/pleasure. The catch.... is you are only allowed to live for 30 years!

Based on the H.G. Wells book that was way ahead of it's time... (sorry!!). The movie is dated but very enjoyable nevertheless.

Dystopia...now. Incredible imagery and music woven together illustrating the beauty of our world, the encroaching ugliness created by humanity and the loss of dignity and human identity resulting from overpopulation and crowding.

Purely satirical and nutty film set in the future... classic early Woody.

Another indelible classic. Oddly, even though the facial prosthetics and make up are now dated... I much prefer them, and the original movie, to the recent remake. A post-apocalyptic dystopia with a twist... our primate "ancestors" are the dominant species. Be nice to the primates....

Not exactly dystopic in the broader sense. An example of when android technology turns the tables on unsuspecting human joy seekers. I, Robot without the 3 laws.

More blending of human biology and technology in a way that only Giger's beautifully twisted mind can imagine. Is this the fate of Mankind?

Neil Peart and band had a Rand phase starting with Fly By Night, peaking in 2112 and eventually dissipated by the Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures albums. The title song in 2112 focuses on a citizen of a future dystopia where all history has been erased. An accidental discovery of a guitar leads to his "awakening" which inevitably leads to a clash with the authorities...
