![]() | The World at War (30th Anniversary Edition)
Buy new: $40.99 / Used from: $32.99 10.80; This 1974 documentary is here because its the only one youll need. The 26 episodes detail everything from the causes of the war, to the war itself and the aftermath, and include many interviews with participants on both sides. Eleven discs with over 22 hours of footage, plus twelve hours of extras! $129 when I began; my historian friend paid $100, I got it for $75. Look at the price now!

![]() | The Great Escape (2-Disc Collector's Set)
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $5.33 10.18; Great fictionalized account of a true story. Steve McQueen, James Garner, Charles Bronson and Donald Pleasance head an all-star cast of POWs with one thing on their minds: escape the 'escape-proof' camp. McQueen's motorcycle ride is an iconic scene in film history.
![]() | The Bridge on the River Kwai (Limited Edition)
Buy used from: $8.34 9.82; What can I say about this story of British POWs in the Burmese jungle? Seven Oscars, including three of the 'Big Four' (Picture, Actor-Alec Guinness, and Director-David Lean), four BAFTAs and three Golden Globes. Brilliant performances from Guinness, William Holden and Sessue Hayakawa. Among the best movies ever, not just war movies. Do yourself a favor and watch it!
![]() | The Longest Day (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $10.97 9.58; While the beginning of SAVING PRIVATE RYAN gets all the glory, this movie is a better depiction of D-Day as a whole. The beginning moves slowly enough that by the time the all-star invasion force leaves for Normandy, the audience is also saying, 'Lemme at those stinkin' Nazis already!'
![]() | The Dirty Dozen (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $24.49 / Used from: $3.98 9.48; Lee Marvin and Richard Jaeckel turn 12 GI convicts into a formidable Special Ops team. Best WWII movie not based on a true story, with an all-star cast. Tom Hanks' commentary on this film in SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE is what prompted me to start this quest for the best.
![]() | Stalag 17 (Special Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $9.77 9.03; Another POW film, this one and THE GREAT ESCAPE combined to inspire the creation of TV's HOGAN'S HEROES. William Holden won the Best Actor Oscar for playing Sgt. Sefton, the guy every other POW suspects is an informer. But is he? Directed by the great Billy Wilder (SOME LIKE IT HOT, and the underappreciated ONE, TWO, THREE).
![]() | Judgment at Nuremberg
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $2.24 8.92; Powerful story of the dilemma faced by an American judge (Spencer Tracy) at the famous war crimes trials. Also features an all-star cast that includes Burt Lancaster and Werner Klemperer (HOGANS HEROES) as defendants, Richard Widmark, Marlene Dietrich, Maximilian Schell, Judy Garland, Montgomery Clift, and a young William Shatner!
![]() | Patton (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $8.95 8.80; Oscar-winning performance (George C. Scott) in an Oscar-winning film about the larger-than-life general. The opening scene in front of the huge US flag is a part of American cinema history. Karl Malden also does well as Gen. Omar Bradley, one of the few men who could deal with Patton.
![]() | Kelly's Heroes
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $4.07 8.67; What is the best way to describe this movie? 'War/Action/Comedy/Caper in Yugoslavia' (WACCY). While most praise goes to the film's 'big four' (Eastwood, Savalas, Rickles and Sutherland), my favorites are Carroll O'Connor (ALL IN THE FAMILY) as the unsuspecting general cheering on these men, and Gavin MacLeod (LOVE BOAT) as the tank crewman who has to put up with Sutherland's Oddball.
![]() | Operation Petticoat
Buy used from: $9.39 8.63; Best World War II comedy ever! Cary Grant (my wife's favorite actor of all time) and Tony Curtis star as the Captain and Executive Officer of the Sea Tiger, a submarine that has many misadventures in the Pacific theatre. This was later made into a TV series in the 70s.
![]() | Twelve O'Clock High (Special Edition)
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $14.16 8.60; Gregory Peck takes command of a bomber unit suffering from low morale and whips them into fighting shape. Dean Jagger won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar playing Peck's aide. Released in 1949, this film is still used to demonstrate leadership in action. And Fox recently gave it the Special Edition treatment it deserves. Too bad I had bought it already!
![]() | Where Eagles Dare (Clint Eastwood Collection)
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $7.75 8.60; Eastwood's 'other' WWII film (actually he made three, but AWAY ALL BOATS didn't make the cut). British commandos and an American lieutenant raid a Nazi-held castle to rescue an Allied general. But is everything as simple as it seems? As Clint says to Richard Burton, 'Major, right now you got me about as confused as I ever hope to be.'
![]() | Tora! Tora! Tora! (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $10.43 8.52; This movie about the attack on Pearl Harbor is almost as accurate as a documentary (unlike that other movie), but with enough action to keep you interested. Recognizable but not 'star' actors help to maintain the documentary feel. Considered a flop in the US, it was a huge success in Japan. Maybe that's because the Japanese characters really speak Japanese!
![]() | The Caine Mutiny (Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $11.00 8.47; Would you want to cross ship Captain Humphrey Bogart, especially if you thought he was insane? Well, that's just what Fred MacMurray goads Executive Officer Van Johnson into doing in this adaptation of Herman Wouk's novel. Who knew that the nice guy from all those Disney films could be such a heel?
![]() | The Enemy Below
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $5.58 8.35; It doesn't have the status of RUN SILENT, RUN DEEP, but I still like it. This stars Robert Mitchum and Curt Jurgens as a US destroyer captain and a German U-Boat commander playing a game of cat-and-mouse across the Atlantic. Note: If Jurgens looks familiar to you, he also played the villain Stromberg in the James Bond flick THE SPY WHO LOVED ME.
![]() | Mister Roberts (Keepcase)
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $12.96 8.08; You can't go wrong with Henry Fonda, even when his tyrannical captain (James Cagney) won't let him transfer to a ship that actually sees some action. Also features the always great Jack Lemmon as Ensign Pulver.
![]() | Battleground
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $4.81 8.03; A movie about the Battle of the Bulge, but not as epic in scope as BATTLE OF THE BULGE. It focuses on a squad of the 101st Airborne Division trapped in the besieged city of Bastogne. Another gem written by Robert Pirosh (creator of TVs "COMBAT!"), this stars war movie veteran Van Johnson and features a very young Ricardo Montalban.
![]() | Father Goose
Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $9.85 7.95; Another War/Comedy from Cary Grant. This time he's a boozing civilian plane spotter who by circumstance finds himself taking care of the still-lovely Leslie Caron (GIGI, CHOCOLAT) and seven school girls on a deserted Pacific island. One of the wife's favorites!
![]() | To Be or Not to Be
Buy used from: $39.49 7.87; The oldest movie here (released in 1942) stars Jack Benny and Carole Lombard (her last role). A Polish acting troupe matches wits with a German colonel during the occupation. Made while the US was still 'neutral', it is funny while also making political commentary. When researching this list I found that we owned this already as part of the CLASSIC COMEDIES COLLECTION box set.
![]() | Battle of the Bulge
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $4.69 7.77; This movie took liberties with the history of this last major German offensive, but the battle scenes and the all-star cast (Henry Fonda, Robert Shaw, Robert Ryan, Dana Andrews, George Montgomery, Ty Hardin, Charles Bronson, James MacArthur and Telly Savalas) make this one worthy of epic status.
![]() | Run Silent, Run Deep
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $3.76 7.73; This, the standard for all submarine movies, stars Clark Gable as the captain trying to make up for past mistakes and Burt Lancaster as the Executive Officer trying to keep Gable from recklessly endangering the sub and its crew. One of Gable's last films, and one of his best performances.
![]() | Von Ryan's Express (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $10.93 7.70; Yes, Frank Sinatra made a WWII movie, and it's a pretty good thriller. Col. Ryan is an American with mostly British soldiers in an Italian POW camp taken over by the Germans. The prisoners escape, and that's when all the fun begins. Like TWELVE O'CLOCK HIGH, Fox just issued a Special Edition version (after I bought the previous edition, of course).
![]() | The Dam Busters
Buy used from: $58.46 7.65; The British devise an ingenious device to carry out a daring attack on the dams of the Ruhr River Valley. If this looks familiar to you, this is one of the many movies George Lucas ripped off when he made STAR WARS (Ep IV) -- specifically the Death Star trench scenes.
![]() | Heaven Knows Mr. Allison
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $6.82 7.63; A WWII movie that even the 'chick flick' fan can enjoy! Robert Mitchum and Deborah Kerr star as a Marine corporal and a nun, stranded together on a Pacific island. Two things you probably already figured out: Romance is in the air, and Japanese troops want to spoil the fun.
![]() | Saints and Soldiers
Buy new: $18.49 / Used from: $6.37 7.62; The newest movie here (released in 2005) is a very 'up-close and personal' view of war. We follow four survivors of the Malmedy Massacre as they try to get back to Allied lines. While the character Deacon is implicitly a Mormon, this is not a 'Mormon movie'. It is a gripping war movie that shows that in war, things are not always us-versus-them. Find it if you can!
![]() | The Counterfeit Traitor
Buy used from: $5.96 7.60; William Holden takes a turn as a Swedish oil trader who is blackmailed by the British into spying on the Nazis. Sorry I don't have more, but I haven't seen it.
![]() | The Desert Fox
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $5.99 7.58; The underrated James Mason plays General Irwin Rommel, arguably the German's best commander, in this fairly good biopic. Also features a great performance by Luther Adler (ironically, a Jew) as Adolf Hitler. There is a sequel of sorts (THE DESERT RATS starring Richard Burton) in which Mason reprises his role, but it didn't make my cut.
![]() | Midway (Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $8.00 7.57; Good movie about the 'turning point' of the Pacific naval war, but it gets knocks for the love story and 70s styles. With this cast and score, though, I'll overlook them. Stars Charlton Heston, Edward Albert, Henry Fonda, James Coburn, Glenn Ford, Hal Holbrook, Toshiro Mifune, Robert Mitchum, and Cliff Robertson, with Erik Estrada (pre-CHiPs) and Tom Selleck (pre-MAGNUM PI). Wow!
![]() | They Were Expendable
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $5.21 7.53; While John Wayne was just a small part of the all-star cast of THE LONGEST DAY, here he is the big star. Well, he and the PT boats trying to defend the Philippines from the Japanese. Robert Montgomery is great here, too. Most movie buffs agree that this is one of the best WWII films ever made, period.
![]() | Battle of Britain (Collector's Edition)
Buy used from: $5.00 7.53; This all-star epic scores points with me because the Germans speak German! I could do without the Christopher Plummer/Susannah York romance, but can you leave a movie about the RAF's stand against the Luftwaffe off your list? Especially with some of the best aerial dogfights ever filmed? C'mon! Also stars Michael Caine, Curt Jurgens, Laurence Olivier and too many others to mention!
