This is a great watch with the gaunt Jimmy Stuart starring as a bounty hunter. Humorous moments in a noirish western coupled with a superior script lift this one to the top twenty of all time.
Rio Bravo [Blu-ray]Rio Bravo [Blu-ray]

RB is a decent John Wayne vehicle, starring in a semi-comedy, semi-dramatic role. Solid support from Dean Martin, Walter Brennan, and heart-throb Ricky Nelson. Angie Dickinson never looked sharper. This is a B+ oater from Director Howard Hawks.
Sam Peckinpah's Legendary Westerns Collection (The Wild Bunch / Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid / Ride the High Country / The Ballad of Cable Hogue)Sam Peckinpah's Legendary Westerns Collection (The Wild Bunch / Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid / Ride the High Country / The Ballad of Cable Hogue)

Sam Peckinpah's take on a popular Western topic, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. SP uses his typical slow-mo violence (though tame by today's standards). Bob Dylan has an odd movie role, and his music to the soundtrack is great (he wrote "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" for this flick). Solid oater.

For my money, Clint is much better in his later Westerns than the early ones. UNFORGIVEN, in this DVD set, for instance, is heads-and-shoulders above the others here. There are fewer eye squints and tough guy grimaces and real character acting emerges.

Jack Palance as a bad guy makes worth the viewing alone. Alan Ladd gives a polished performance in this picture now considered a classic.
The Man Who Loved Cat DancingThe Man Who Loved Cat Dancing
Burt Reynolds gives a creditable performance.
The OutlawThe Outlaw
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $0.59
Off-beat, old-time black & white film tells yet another tale of Billy the Kid and Pat Garrett. Most notably stars a buxom, sultry Jane Russell as Rio, Doc Holliday's girl. Also is enjoyable for the wry performance of the first-rate character actor Thomas Mitchell as Pat Garrett.
Joe KiddJoe Kidd

Ah, callow youth. I saw this Western at the movie theater at Fort Riley, Kansas, when it came out. Screenplay is by Elmore Leonard (ref: imdb). A better-than-average Clint Eastwood vehicle, the plot is a bit thin but the action makes up for it. A few bits of humor also helps the viewing.
My Darling ClementineMy Darling Clementine
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $5.69
Henry Fonda turns in a stunning performance as Wyatt Earp, sheriff of Tombstone. Victor Mature is a cranky Doc Holliday. Linda Darnell is a beauty on the screen, later to die in a tragic fire. For my money, Walter Brennan in a different role as bad guy Old Man Clanton alone is worth the viewing.
The ShootingThe Shooting
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $1.85
Some veiwers might enjoy watching a young Jack Nicholson star in an offbeat Western directed by Monte Wellman. I'm a big JN fan, so it was worth my time. Nothing cliched about this one. Warren Oates does a good acting job, too.
100 Rifles100 Rifles
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $5.98
Not a bad Western you might watch on a slow, rainy Sunday afternoon. Jim Brown (lawman) and Burt Reynolds (Yaqui Native American) become unlikely partners while Fernando Armas, a Mexican Army General, tracks them. Of course, Raquel Welch, as always, looks hot.
The War WagonThe War Wagon
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $4.32
I don't enjoy the later John Wayne oaters as much. WAR WAGON pairs Wayne with Kirk Douglas in an implausible but sometimes amusing plot. It's an above average star turn by both of the veteran actors.

Robert Redford. That's the vast appeal to this outdoor men's adventure film. The well-rounded narrative depicts Redford as a cantankerous mountain man in the title role. Great camera work captures the rugged alpine landscape. Social message behind the film doesn't detract from the drama.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid [Blu-ray]Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $18.49 / Used from: $19.89
Paul Newman and Robert Redford teamed up for this what has become classic Western about the celebrated outlaw partners. I guess that's what Hollywood calls "good chemistry". The humor and violence are well balanced. Highly recommended.
True Grit (Special Collector's Edition)True Grit (Special Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $7.02
The Duke won his only Oscar for this rollicking, good-humored Western. Kim Darby and, to a lesser extent, Glen Campbell are good in supporting roles.
The Magnificent Seven (Special Edition)The Magnificent Seven (Special Edition)
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $1.99
A watchable, ambitious Western featuring an all-star cast, headed by Yul Brynner. Eli Wallach is a riot as the mean bandito. Surprisingly effective scenes played by Charles Bronson and Steve McQueen. Brynner is a little stiff and formal as the leader. Still a good action flick if taken as a whole.
Wyatt Earp [HD DVD]Wyatt Earp [HD DVD]
Buy used from: $3.68
Even-paced, well-acted rendition of the famed frontier sheriff's life, including the bloody showdown at the OK Corral. Dennis Quaid plays Doc Holliday with cagey flair. Costner in the lead role sometimes comes off as a bit stoic but a good supporting cast with a short appearance of Gene Hackman carries off the movie.
Western UnionWestern Union
Frtiz Lang directed this Western (adapted from Zane Grey's last novel) shot on location in majestic Utah. Randolph Scott is intense and Robert Young mugs his way through the picture. Slim Summerville is the cowpoke humor. Overall effect makes for an entertaining historic flick.
Hang 'Em HighHang 'Em High
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $1.98
This 1968 oater stars a young Clint Eastwood with able support from Dennis Hopper, Ben Johnson, and Ed Begley (great performance). I recently viewed it again, and found it's aged pretty well. Eastwood isn't the most polished actor, but the story premise is interesting.
High Noon (Collector's Edition)High Noon (Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $18.49 / Used from: $6.98
I saw this years ago, and watched it again recently, and the dramatic tension hasn't abated one whit. Gary Cooper still stands tall. The clock still ticks off the seconds until noon. Grace Kelly never looked better. Adapted from John W. Cunningham's pulp story, "The Tin Star".
El DoradoEl Dorado
Buy used from: $3.99
I saw this one on the silver screen when it was released. Wonderful pairing of John Wayne and the droll Robert Mitchum. Leigh Brackett, the great noir writer, penned the script. Also stars James Caan and Ed Asner. Directed by Howard Hawks. Well worth the watch.
The Alamo [Region 2]The Alamo [Region 2]

The Duke directed this pet project and plays Davy Crockett. Richard Widmark and Laurence Harvey also star. Great camera work in an epic tale. Look for Linda Cristol later of TV's HIGH CHAPPARAL fame. Denver Pyle, Frankie Avalon, and Chill Wills also have parts. Very watchable film.
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (Two-Disc Special Edition)The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $8.66 / Used from: $8.58
"They don't make them like that anymore" applies to this movie title. Bogart as Fred C. Dobbs gave his arguably best performance. Directed by John Huston with his father Walter Huston as one of the miners.
Two Mules For Sister SaraTwo Mules For Sister Sara

I always get a kick out of watching this Western. Clint has met his match in Shirley MacLaine posing as a nun. Great humor and Shirley quickly takes center stage.

This light-hearted fare stars a youthful James Garner in a Maverick role. Bawdy humor and Garner's wit raise this above the usual Western. Enjoyable.
How the West Was WonHow the West Was Won

This epic picture featured an all-star cast including Jimmy Stewart, The Duke, Walter Brennan, Carolyn Jones (aka Morticia Addams), and Debbie Reynolds. I saw it at the drive-in theater, so the grandeur is a vivid memory. John Ford directed. Energetic, polished, and very watchable.
Blazing Saddles (30th Anniversary Special Edition)Blazing Saddles (30th Anniversary Special Edition)

How could I forget Mel Brooks' spoof on Westerns? I've only seen it four times, always getting a chuckle or two from it. Slim Pickens is a riot. Good bet if you're in the mood for a laugh.
Duel in the SunDuel in the Sun
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $4.90
Legendary producer David O. Selznick reshot GONE WITH THE WIND in this sweeping Western released in 1946. A young Gregory Peck is less interesting than the overall story. Jennifer Jones is a looker, and Butterfly McQueen is the delightful comic relief. A bit overdone but interesting for the large cast and great camera work.
The MisfitsThe Misfits
Buy used from: $2.17
THE MISFITS is the saddest Western ever made. Arthur Miller wrote it. John Huston directed it. Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, Montgomery Clift, Eli Wallach, and Thelma Ritter starred in it. Gable and Monroe never made another flick. Clift and Ritter died within a decade. Shot in black and white, all the actors give gritty performances, despite everything.
The BeguiledThe Beguiled
Buy used from: $14.55
Tagline: One man...seven women...in a strange house! A youthful Clint Eastwood as a wounded Union officer is nursed by a household of bizarre ladies. This Southern Gothic isn't great acting, but the plotline is creepily interesting enough. Eastwood's films before the Dirty Harry run. This one has a nasty ending.
HudHud
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $4.07
This one of my favorite star turns by Paul Newman. He plays an arrogant, loutish, womanizing cad to the hilt. Patricia Neal plays a worldly lady but who loves and hates Hud Bannon. ("I always say the law was meant to be interpreted in a lenient manner.") Rich and nasty.

Think: oil, and you can see why this movie still resonates today. From the popular novel by Edna Ferber (who's largely slipped from the radar), this sprawling epic features Liz Taylor, Rock Hudson (straight role), and James Dean. Also look for Dennis Hopper. Somewhat uneven, but worth a watch.
SilveradoSilverado

Kevin Kline starred in this Western in 1983 when the Westerns had all but gone extinct. Directed by Lawrence Kasdan with satisfying results. Danny Glover and Kevin Costner (before he hit super stardom) round out the cast of misfits.
City SlickersCity Slickers
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $1.84
The first CITY SLICKERS is the better of the two. One funny scene left me in stitches. Jack Palance hams it up. Billy Crystal is in top form. A feel good, humorous movie worth the rental.
Young Guns (Special Edition)Young Guns (Special Edition)

Plenty of action and slow mo violence give this movie its punch. The storyline is a little dicey but the kid actors do a good job.
Pale RiderPale Rider

Clint Eastwood plays a preacher (yes, you heard it right) in a morality flick. Not bad stuff though UNFORGIVEN is a better movie.
A Fistful of DollarsA Fistful of Dollars
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $1.93
This is a typical Sergio Leone flick, the so-called "spaghetti Western" (A Fistful Of Dollars, For A Few Dollars More, The Good, The Bad And The Ugly). Critics generally panned or ignored them. Even if, they make for an entertaining change of pace. Eastwood isn't in top form here, but the storyline clips along. Lots of blood and shoot-em-ups.
ShenandoahShenandoah
Buy used from: $6.49
Wel-done drama set in Virginia during the Civil War but Jimmy Stewart plays it with the grit and steel of an old-fashioned Western. Look for Katherine Ross in her first role and a young Doug McClure. Stewart's dominant role shows a proud father's emotion for his family and land.
The ShootistThe Shootist
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $5.09
Sentimental, tough story of dying gunfighter's last days (cancer). Good job by John Wayne and Lauren Bacall.
