Arabia: The Essential AlbumArabia: The Essential Album by Various Artists
Buy used from: $2.69
This is a great compilation with a lot of variety. Particular favourites are Cairo Bar, El Harba Wine and Alaoui - amazing drum piece!
Arabia: The Women's VoiceArabia: The Women's Voice by Various Artists
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $4.96
This gives a nice cross-section of some famous artists over time, from recent songs to more classic ones: my favourites are Ya Glebey, Herihtak, and Ana Bashak El Bahr.
Absolute OrientalAbsolute Oriental by Various Artists
Buy used from: $65.00
Definitely a mixed bag here ("Toi & Moi" by Nadim may be my least favourite song ever!) but has some really great tracks, including Wine by Assia, Ma Haddesh Ye Lomni by Hakim, and Iftah Albak by Mohammed Mouneer. Lots of variety!
HalimHalim by Natacha Atlas
Buy used from: $9.96
Natacha Atlas is a favourite artist of mine, and her work is extremely popular with bellydancers! This is a good early album, and you'll find tracks such as Marifnaash and Kidda showing up on lots of other compilations. Amulet is one of my stock pieces.
DiasporaDiaspora by Natacha Atlas
Buy used from: $6.94
Another one of Natacha Atlas's best albums (not counting the truly terrible Fun Does Not Exist - just skip past that one!) Iskanderia, Leysh Nat'arak and especially Duden are worth the price of the album in themselves.
Café Arabia: Rai Roots and Mint TeaCafé Arabia: Rai Roots and Mint Tea by Cafe Arabia
Buy new: $23.98 / Used from: $2.10
A nice introduction to North African music - I love N'Touma and Hagda.
NiyazNiyaz by Niyaz
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $7.24
This album was the best completely random selection from the World Music section I've ever made - every song is a gem. Two of the best are The Hunt and Minara, but they're all worth listening to - try the MP3 player on the Amazon site!
1, 2, 3 Soleils1, 2, 3 Soleils by Taha
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $6.73
Absolutely brilliant live album, with three of the biggest vocalists in rai and one of Middle Eastern music’s biggest instrumental stars on percussion. Favourite tracks are Khalliouni, Eray, and especially Abdel Kader - eight years after I first heard the song, it still gives me the shivers!
The Best of Hossam RamzyThe Best of Hossam Ramzy by Hossam Ramzy
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $6.99
Great instrumental CD - the first Middle Eastern music I ever bought, and excellent for starting off in bellydance. Sehr Oyounik is my personal favourite.
Best of Oriental Album in the WorldBest of Oriental Album in the World by Various Artists
Buy new: $18.98 / Used from: $0.45
The title might be overstating the case a little, but it is good value for money! The first three songs are all classics, as is Nezlen Ala El Boustan. Cheb Mami's insanely bouncy Le Rai C'est Chic is one of those songs that everyone either loves or hates with a passion - either way, worth a listen!
Sabla Tolo: Journeys into Pure Egyptian PercussionSabla Tolo: Journeys into Pure Egyptian Percussion by Hossam Ramzy
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $9.33
Excellent drum album, although some may be too fast or long for beginners. Personally I like Serena's Step (the titles are all rather kitsch in translation!)
Bellydance Superstars 1Bellydance Superstars 1 by Various Artists
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $6.95
The Bellydance Superstars compilations tend to have great quality songs, but their favourites get very overplayed - if you pick one for a show, be prepared to find somebody else dancing to the same tune! However, this is still worth it just for listening to. Ice Queen and Raks Africa are amazing pieces, and Talakik is ridiculously catchy (be warned – it’ll stay in your head for days).
Galactic Caravan: Intergalactic BellydanceGalactic Caravan: Intergalactic Bellydance by Various Artists
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $8.98
This is great for tribal-style work, although some of the songs are suitable for fast traditional or pop bellydance as well. Their covers of songs by Hakim and Faudel are my favourites.
Indestructible Arabian BeatsIndestructible Arabian Beats by Indestructible Arabian Beats
Buy new: $28.98 / Used from: $2.09
One of the best compilations I've bought. Very modern, nontraditional music - I really like La Muchacha Turka, the Spanish version of Tarkan's famous Sikidim (that "kiss kiss" song!), as well as Salla and Kim Dedi. Ya Saryan has somewhat disturbing lyrics, and Un Ange en Paix is a remixed version that falls short of the original, but in general there's a lot of great stuff here.
Yol BolsinYol Bolsin by Sevara Nazarkhan
Buy used from: $3.99
I love Sevara's voice. Favourite tracks are Yor-Yor and the title track, Yol Bolsin.
