Academy award and Golden Globes nominations earned by Phil Collins (Original Song). Jeff Bridges, a football player, between two teams, is asked by James Woods to find his girl-friend Rachel Ward who ran away to Mexico. Nice scenery but the movie is already forgotten.

	Mr. Horn Buy used from: $82.74 **1/2 1979. TV movie directed by Jack Starrett. Two episodes of Tom Horn's life. The search for Geronimo and the events leading to his hanging. Superb Richard Widmark performance in an average production. Already forgotten.
	Bear Island [VHS] Buy used from: $9.95 ** 1979. Co-written and directed by Don Sharp. Based on an Alistair MacLean novel. Located between Scandinavia and the Arctic pole, BEAR ISLAND is visited by a group of scientists. They are killed one by one by people trying to find a nazi cache on the island. One or two good things don't save this film from total oblivion. Inadvisable.
	The Swarm Buy used from: $6.93 ***1/2 1978. Produced and directed by Irwin Allen. Academy award in the Best Costume Design category. Texas. A swarm of killer bees is attacking people and soon entire towns. Militaries and scientists join forces to find an antidote. Above average environmental disaster movie deserving to be rediscovered today. Recommended.
	Coma Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $1.01 ***1/2 1978. Co-written and directed by Michael Crichton. Memorial Hospital, Boston. Dr. Susan Wheeler's best friend becomes comatose after a minor surgical operation. Susan discovers that an unusual number of patients fell into coma during the last 12 months. Look for Tom Selleck and Lois Chiles's small parts. Good thriller. Recommended.
	Rollercoaster Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $3.57 ** 1977. Directed by James Goldstone. A young man blackmails a group of amusement parks's owners and threatens them by provoking accidents. Harry Calder is asked by the F.B.I. to bring the money to the blackmailer. Between JAWS and DIRTY HARRY, the film is totally inadvisable unless you're a Widmark fan.
	The Domino Principle/March or Die Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $6.23 **** 1977. THE DOMINO PRINCIPLE. Produced and directed by Stanley Kramer. Gene Hackman, a convict, is approached by Richard Widmark who proposes to help him to escape. Hackman understands soon that he'll have to pay a price to his benefactors. There is a great zone 2 DVD of this film available in Europe. Check it out! Highly recommended.
	Twilight's Last Gleaming **** 1977. Directed by Robert Aldrich. Politique fiction at its best. A former US Air Force general, in the company of three escapees, manage to get into a military silo. He then threatens the U.S. President to launch nine nuclear missiles unless a secret document is made public. Highly recommended.
	The Sell-Out Buy new: $14.95 / Used from: $1.94 ***1/2 1976. Israeli co-production directed by Peter Collinson. The CIA and the KGB decide to eliminate Gabriel Lee, a spy currently working for the Russians. Lee finds refuge at Sam Lucas's home. Sam is a former CIA agent who retired a few years before. If you like spy thrillers on location, check this one. Not a masterpiece but still watchable. Recommended.
	To The Devil A Daughter Buy used from: $4.00 ***1/2 1976. Directed by Peter Sykes. A writer (Widmark), versed in mystic matters, is asked by Henry Beddows to take care of his only daughter Catherine. Widmark soon understands that the young girl has been chosen by Father Michael Rayner to host the return of the demon. In spite of the last five minutes, I recommend this Hammer movie.
	Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $3.90 ***1/2 1974. Directed by Sidney Lumet. Academy award earned by Ingrid Bergman and six other nominations by the movie. Widmark is killed in the Orient Express so the Belgian detective Hercule Poirot is asked to investigate about it. Recommended.
	When the Legends Die [VHS] Buy used from: $9.99 ***1/2 1972. Directed by Stuart Millar. Golden Globe nomination earned by Frederic Forrest. A young Ute Indian is forced to learn the "New Ways" of the Whites. A few years later, he's hired and trained as a rodeo man by Red Dillon who'll become his substitute father. Recommended.
	Death of a Gunfighter [ NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Reg.2 Import - Spain ] Buy used from: $33.99 **** 1969. Directed by Don Siegel and Robert Totten. Marshal Frank Patch is beginning to feel old but doesn't want to retire when the local authorities ask him to do so. Highly commendable western deserving to be rediscovered.
	Gun Crazy [VHS] Buy used from: $11.11 *1/2 1969. Directed by Richard Quine. A parodic western with Richard Widmark playing a gambler who wins a ranch in Mexico and marries a nymphomaniac young woman. Really inadvisable.
	Madigan Buy used from: $1.32 ****1/2 1968. Written by Abraham Polonsky and directed by Don Siegel. NYC. Detectives Madigan and Bonaro fail to arrest Barney Benesch who steals Madigan's gun. The detectives are given 72 hours to find the criminal back. Meanwhile, Commissioner Russell has to deal with various problems in the department. Highly recommended to amateurs of detective movies.
	The Way West Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $7.56 **** 1967. Directed by Andrew V. McLaglen. Undoubtedly, the best film of this director. Sally Field's first movie. 1843. Senator Kirk Douglas leads a wagon trail heading to Oregon. Indians, accidents, rebellions and dramas give rythm to this western. Although pompous at times, THE WAY WEST is nevertheless highly recommended.
	Alvarez Kelly Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $3.91 *** 1966. Directed by Edward Dmytryk. During the Confederation war, Texan Alvarez Kelly is forced to help Tom Rossiter to bring 2500 cows to Richmond through General Grant lines. Agreeable western but already forgotten.
	The Bedford Incident Buy new: $15.49 / Used from: $27.20 ***1/2 1965. Third Richard Widmark production, directed by James B. Harris. This film which belongs to the politic fiction genre tells the story of an American captain who hunts a Soviet submarine in the North Atlantic sea. At first, it's a kind of game. It ends apocalyptical. Recommended.
	Cheyenne Autumn Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $3.49 ***1/2 1964. Directed by John Ford. An Academy award nomination for William Clothier (cinematography) and a Golden Globe nomination for Gilbert Roland (Supporting actor). If the topic of the film is very important (The Cheyennes compared to the Jews during WWII), I'm not convinced by the form of the film. The James-Wyatt Earp-Stewart interlude is for instance rather ridiculous. Recommended though.
	Flight from Ashiya ( Ashiya kara no hiko ) [ NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Reg.0 Import - Spain ] ** 1964. Directed by Michael Anderson. US Air Force Base, Ashiya, Japan. Chakiris, Widmark and Brynner are working in the Air/Sea Rescue Service. During a mission in the China sea, they each think about a traumatic experience of their past. No talent in the direction and stupid romantic episodes. Inadvisable.
	The Long Ships Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $7.99 ***1/2 1964. Directed by Jack Cardiff. Vikings and Moors try to find a huge bell made of gold said to be hidden somewhere on the Mediterranean coast. Fun B movie with battles, tortures, harems and so on. For the kid in me and in you. Recommended.
	How the West Was Won (Blu-ray Book) [Blu-ray] Buy new: $23.99 / Used from: $18.47 ***1/2 1962. Written by James R. Webb and directed by Henry Hathaway, John Ford and George Marshall. Three Academy awards (Writing, Sound and Editing) and five other nominations. The movie depicts the difficulties of the first immigrants trying to make a living in the West. Very uneven, the film nevertheless deserves our attention. Recommended.
	Judgment at Nuremberg Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $2.16 ***** 1961. Written by Abby Mann and produced and directed by Stanley Kramer. Two Academy awards (Maximilian Schell and Abby Mann) and two Golden Globes (Schell and Kramer). 1948, Nuremberg. Judge Dan Haywood is asked to preside over the trial of four German magistrates guilty of various crimes against humanity. Masterpiece.
	Two Rode Together [ NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Region 2 Import - Great Britain ] Buy used from: $23.98 ***1/2 1961. Produced and directed by John Ford. Marshal Guthrie McCabe is asked by Maj. Frazer to meet the Comanches in order to negociate the return of the white prisoners kept by the Indians. Accompanied by First Lt. Jim Gary, he meets Chief Quanah Parker and manages to come back with two ex-prisoners. Recommended.
