![]() | Beginning Yoga: Erich Schiffmann's Backyard Series
Buy used from: $149.19 This is a terrific video for all levels and is a favorite in my collection. It features basic poses that anyone can do, but they are challenging.
![]() | Altar of the Heart
Buy used from: $35.00 Should be a staple of your collection. The video features more advanced poses, like headstand, but these can be modified/skipped. This video is my all-time favorite. It gives your muscles a nice stretch and includes creative strength work.
![]() | Backbends: Yoga with Erich Schiffmann, Backyard Series
Schiffmann is impeccable. Superb instruction. Don't be intimidated by the word "backbends." You don't have to do a wheel. Lots of asanas to improve back flexibility and strength.
![]() | Shiva Rea - Creative Core Abs
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $3.68 Fantastic DVDs\. Don't be put off by the cover. It is much more structured than Shiva Rea's Trance Dance, yet the movements are still fluid and creative. Recommend to anyone who dislikes traditional ab work and likes movement inspired by modern dance.
![]() | Yoga In the Garden of Serenity with Kathleen Anderson
I use this weekly. It's done completely seated. Well-chaptered. I use the 10-min. neck sequence at least weekly. Xllent for desk workers. One of my favorite restorative practices. Gentle. Therapeutic.
![]() | Bryan Kest Power Yoga Complete Collection
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $9.50 Make this a staple of your collection of you're looking for an aerobic-style yoga practice. Kest talks non-stop and his proverbial encouragements can be distracting, but his workouts are very good, and worth the money.
![]() | Power Yoga - Total Body Workout
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $6.72 Not as intense as Bryan Kest. You do hold the poses for a long time though. I recommend this video for advanced beginners and low intermediate students. The toughest move is a wheel. Lovely cinematography. Soothing.
![]() | Total Yoga: The Flow Series - Fire (Level 3)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $2.00 Surprisingly good workout for the price. Lots of sun salutations & chaturangas. This is a real strength building practice. Production quality is low. If you want intensity in under an hour and are tired of Kest, this DVD is the way to go.
![]() | Yoga Dharana: Aligning the Upper Body, Level 1
Buy used from: $78.52 This is a good "reference work" DVD. It's just under an hour and includes detailed instruction on how to keep the shoulders and neck aligned in several foundational poses like downward dog, warrior, and bridge.
![]() | Yoga with Ateeka: Divine Yoga Flow
Buy used from: $11.50 This is a nice slow flow workout for intermed. students familiar with yoga poses. In several places it's a little too New Agey for my taste (e.g. the shoulder stand allows you to see the world from a "different perspective"). The instruction, however, is clear and I never found myself lost.
![]() | Yoga Zone - Power Yoga for Strength and Endurance
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $7.20 This is a good video for Yoga Zone, which tends to cater to beginners. It's challenging. It has tons of chair twists, good leg workout, and is filmed outdoors. I still use this one occasionally. Drawback: the instructor's giggles seemed artificial and, long term, they are distracting.
![]() | Sacred Yoga Practice with Rainbeau Mars - Vinyasa Flow: Pure Power
Buy used from: $3.18 Good 25 minute workout, though it will work your arms much more than your legs. Adds some new twists on standards like the plank pose. Lots of push-ups. Quick power workout.
![]() | The Yogi's Companion
Buy used from: $8.98 If you like Shiva Rea's Yoga Sanctuary, you'll love this. I only did sections 1-4 plus savasana. Sections 5 & 6 were too advanced (handstands, etc.). Highly recommended.
![]() | Best of Both Worlds; Yoga Chant Kirtan Music
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $11.46 Music only (no workout). There are a lot of mediocre yoga-inspired CDs on the market. This one is worth purchasing though. The music is beautiful and uplifting. Xllent for fast flows. I love this CD.
![]() | The Pleasure of Strength
Buy new: $20.00 / Used from: $18.50 Excellent DVD. Forrest focuses on the healing power of yoga and core work. DVD begins with a long core sequence w/ variations of sit ups with your legs spread wide open above you. Really stretches the inner thighs & hip flexors. 30 & 60 min routine included.
![]() | Ali MacGraw - Yoga Mind & Body
Buy used from: $31.00 This is a good video for beginners who are physically fit. This was my first video and I still return to it every now and then. It is not challenging for the intermediate student.
![]() | Antonia Kidman Yoga - The Power and Style Of Ashtanga
Buy used from: $11.99 This video is a bargain. It takes you through a modified version of the Ashtanga sequence, which is very effective. The pace is very fast, however. It's a good video, but I find that I don't use it as often as others because of the pace.
![]() | Beryl Bender Birch Power Yoga: The Practice
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $6.24 Features the ENTIRE Ashtanga Primary sequence, one of my favorite forms of yoga because it is very challenging and increases strength and flexibility quickly due to its intensity. Downsides: pace is VERY fast, so that I often feel rushed. No music. 90 min. Many moves are much too advanced for me.
![]() | Power Yoga for Runners
Buy used from: $8.76 A solid 30-min. fast power workout. The production quality is low, however. There is no chaptering. And the opening clip (Thom Birch running 80s style down a lone road) is odd. It's still a keep for me on days when I'm short of time.
![]() | Baron Baptiste - Journey Into Power Level 2
Buy used from: $74.99 Good power yoga workout. Really gets the heart rate up. A little cheesy. Poor production quality, but does the job.
![]() | Hemalaya Behl: Yoga for Urban Living
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $2.94 Nice restorative yoga. Includes 3 workouts. I've done am and pm, which are both short 30m. routines. Relaxing. The focus is on breath and it feels "kundalini"-like to me without all of the esotericism of that style. Soothing. Slow. Sensuous. Nice.
![]() | Yoga For Your Moods
Buy used from: $24.95 20 min to 1 hr practices on 1 DVD. Vinyasa style. Not bad, but some of the shorter practices don't sequence well. Queing average. Mediocre overall. I prefer Rea, Pyle, Anderson, and Peterson.
![]() | All The Right Moves
Buy used from: $15.00 This is definitely NOT a traditional yoga video, but it's a strength DVD that combines elements from pilate, ballet, and yoga. I found it to be challenging, but a bit long at just about an hour. It's a nice way into yoga for those who like athletic style workouts, but are interesting in doing something more modern.
![]() | Om Yoga and Meditation
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $2.45 Mediocre overall. Lectures not useful. Nice CD with music. Four 15-min. challenging practices. Felt there wasn't enough of a warm-up, esp. for morning practices. These short practices would be fine if you did your own cardio warm-up first.
![]() | Rodney Yee: Yoga Burn
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $8.05 Title misleading. Some poses give you a "burn" (downward dog with raised leg). Too often, he modifies poses for beginners (e.g. lunge prayer twist). For genuine beginners only, but I suspect that they too will quickly tire of this one.
![]() | Mark Blanchard's Progressive Power Yoga Trilogy
Very advanced. Didn't care for Blanchard's videos because of his aggressive personality. I got rid of most of my Blanchard Sedona PPY DVDs for precisely this reason. No music. Good as strictly athletic style workouts, but instructor seems artificial.
![]() | American Power Yoga, Strength
Buy new: $12.95 / Used from: $9.51 Not impressed by this video. The instructor was imitating Bryan Kest down to his idioms. There were a few moves in this DVD that were slightly different that Kest's, but I found the instructor snarky and much less likable.
![]() | Chakra Yoga
Buy used from: $14.41 I didn't like this DVD because it was much too esoteric for my tastes. The DVD is 72 minutes long and Gurutej Kaur talks for a long time between poses. The focus is on breath. Form is not discussed and is not really important in Kundalini yoga. Nothing really physically challenging in this video and Gurutej seemed more vacuous than spiritual.
![]() | Seane Corn: Vinyasa Flow Yoga - Uniting Movement And Breath - Session One
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $7.77 Didn't like this one. I found Corn's voice harsh and distracting, I couldn't make it t hrough the entire workout. Nails on chalkboard effect. The set is also very dark. I prefer outdoor settings. The filming, combined with her voice made this video have a high dread factor for me.
![]() | Seane Corn: Vinyasa Flow Yoga - The Body And Beyond - Session Two (Beginner II/Intermediate I)
Buy used from: $12.51 I decided to give Seane Corn another try. I didn't like this video either for the same reasons.
![]() | MTV Yoga
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $3.11 Actually not bad, but clearly aimed at a younger crowd (14-23). In the end, it was too juvenile for my taste, but fun to try a few times as I was just becoming interested in power yoga-type videos. The instructor is VERY upbeat, but tolerable.
![]() | MTV Power Yoga
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.55 Ditto. Not too bad. A decent workout, but instructor's peppiness (a la Denise Austin) would bother me long term.
