![]() | Days of Heaven - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $35.99 / Used from: $19.98 This film features many parallels to the story of Abram and Sarai as they travel to Egypt from the book of Genesis. The film is outstanding in its own regard, but the subtle symbolism propels it to the next level.

![]() | Ordet [VHS]
Buy used from: $6.99 Dreyer's main theme is the difference between faith through fear of sin and death vs. faith through enjoyment of life. He does an excellent job portraying faith through enjoyment of life with the characters he gives us. Each and every character is deep and real, dealing with complex issues, doubts, and questions. The film propogates that faith through enjoyment of life is essential.

![]() | The Passion of the Christ (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $15.49 / Used from: $1.80 It's pretty obvious how this is spiritually significant. This is the realest depiction of the crucifixion ever seen on film. There is little focus on Jesus' message, which may be a fault, but it's powerful nonetheless.
|
![]() | The Virgin Spring - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $31.99 / Used from: $22.95 Bergman is a director that almost always discusses the idea of faith in his films. The numerous Bergman picks I have on this list should come as no surprise. However, this is his most deeply involving along the lines of faith. Many questions are asked, with little to no answer. But the questions asked are real and ones those of faith often have.

![]() | Into Great Silence (Two-Disc Set)
Buy new: $20.49 / Used from: $18.95 Watching the lives of monks is surprising entrancing. Knowing that these men have willingly chosen this path for their lives and seeing their passion (although in a very relaxed and focused way) unfold on-screen was powerful. It's a life I know I could never lead, but I have respect for those who can.
|
![]() | Stalker: A Film by Andrei Tarkovsky
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $20.25 Stalker deals with faith quite a bit. The main character acts almost as a Christ figure as the two side characters represent two different types of human. The various monologues alone are worth watching the entire movie; they were so elegantly written I wanted to hear them over and over.

![]() | Diary of a Country Priest - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $35.99 / Used from: $18.99 Diary of a Country Priest is a quietly beautiful spiritual film. Bresson gives us a good, realistic picture of a priest and his struggles. The central themes are commitment and passion, in my opinion. Bresson's use of non-actors has always been one that I actually like and it works best in this film. Claude Laydu plays a perfect priest, trying his hardest to be what the town needs spiritually.

![]() | Children of Men (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $1.50 Strangely enough, one of the best nativity stories I've ever seen. Never thought the nativity story could be told with swearing, violence, etc, eh? Well, the scene towards the end (which I won't reveal to stay spoiler free) is one of the most powerful I've ever seen.
|
![]() | The Gospel According to St. Matthew
Buy used from: $7.00 This is about as obvious as The Passion of the Christ. What makes this unique is that it was written and directed by a known athiest. He makes Jesus more human than I've ever seen Him on-screen, without sacrificing His spiritual side in the process.
|
![]() | Winter Light
Buy used from: $30.97 ...and niether does this film. Winter Light follows a pastor as he struggles with God's silence. His perseverence makes him a Noah figure. Many have called this Bergman's signature that God is silent because He does not exist. I think this is an illustration that although God can be silent, He is still there.
|
![]() | The Seventh Seal - Criterion Collection
Buy used from: $14.99 I've always compared the main character in this film to King Solomon from the book of Ecclesiastes. Both experience doubt; both want proof of God's existence. Both are on a true search to know God.
|
![]() | The Passion of Joan of Arc (Criterion Collection Spine #62)
Buy new: $27.99 / Used from: $22.83 There's a ton of spirituality in this film. The most obvious being that Joan was a martyr and a Christ figure. Pretty obvious, but still very powerful.

![]() | The Decalogue (Special Edition Complete Set)
Buy new: $79.95 / Used from: $55.04 |
![]() | The Bible - Genesis
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $2.95 |
![]() | Donnie Darko (Widescreen Edition)
Buy used from: $2.93 Donnie Darko is spiritually significant in the way I personally interpret it - Frank, the bunny, as God; Donnie as Jesus. Yeah, it's strange for anyone who's seen the film, but the parallels are there. Additionally, there is a lot of talk about God and time in this film, although that aspect of it was not as important to me.

![]() | Through a Glass Darkly ( Såsom i en spegel ) [ NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Reg.0 Import - Great Britain ]
Buy used from: $33.99 Bergman has so many significant films of faith. This is from his 'faith trilogy' where spirituality is experienced by a mentally unstable woman and her family. Like The Virgin Spring, this film doesn't make spirituality look like a cake walk...

![]() | Edward Scissorhands (Widescreen Anniversary Edition)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $5.43 Edward's story is a Christ allegory. Whether or not that was Burton's intentions (which I highly doubt), it is such an obvious interpretation that it's nearly impossible to see it any other way after you've noticed it.

![]() | The Lion King (Disney Special Platinum Edition)
Buy used from: $14.95 Although I haven't finished writing my comments, I felt I should address this film so that those who look at this don't immediately dismiss my list because of this one movie. The Lion King features more religious symbolism than I had ever noticed until I heard a sermon taught using this film. Funny enough, the parallels are there.
