It looks like Michael Douglas' character's life is turned into a game gone sadistically bad with real weapons and real consequences and done in an effort to ruin his life, when, in fact, as revealed at the end, the game was all very carefully simulated with special effects, prop guns, and everyone he knows in on it and done in an effort to improve his life.

To avenge his spreading a rumor of a brother having sex with his sister, the protagonist is taken prisoner for 15 years and, upon his release, is hypnotized to fall in love with his also-hypnotized daughter.

Honorable Mention: In a twist very similar to American Beauty's, Denzel Washington's character tells us in a voice-over at the very beginning that this is a story of how he ALMOST dies, but it's that "almost" (and a cat) that provides the twist.
