Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $4.45
Mitchum as Jeff Bailey opposite Jane Greer as Kathie Moffett in Jacques Tourneur's 1947 film noir masterpiece. It has been remade, but never equaled. My favorite film of all time, with so many memorable lines, that one realizes how inferior films are today. Regarding the past and this DVD: I sometimes go there. After seeing it, you will to. Where else is there?

Finally coming to DVD from Criterion. 1973
Angel FaceAngel Face

If Laura is Preminger's Citizen Kane, then Angel Face may be his Third Man. This underrated noir is a mood piece, and Mitchum understood cool like no one else.

Reunited with Jane Greer, Mitchum shines in The Big Steal, a sunny noir from Don Siegel.(1949)

For those unbelievers about Mitchum as a great actor, watch Scorcese's remake. DeNiro tries in vain to project malevolence, using every trick in the actor's handbook; in the original, Mitchum's Max Cady is simply the embodiment of contempt and malice, and perhaps the most frightening character in all of cinema, in J. Lee Thompson's 1962 noir classic.
The Night of the HunterThe Night of the Hunter
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $9.00
Charles Laughton cast just one leading man in his entire career as a film director- and he knew more than a little about acting and actors. Mitchum didn't disappoint, and his psychotic preacher haunts us still.
Farewell, My LovelyFarewell, My Lovely

The other great noir of the '70's was Chinatown. And perhaps the greatest Philip Marlowe was neither Bogart nor Montgomery. Projecting a world weariness within every scene, Mitchum bears his burdens like a modern day Sisyphus. Please studio mavens, re-release this on DVD.
El DoradoEl Dorado

Few went up against John Wayne on screen and won. Wayne had a command of the screen that was rarely challenged; his masculine, authoritative screen presence cannot be taught nor can it be denied. He met his match with Mitchum, and neither of them really ever needed that crutch.
Thunder RoadThunder Road
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $8.24
Many films owe a debt to this inside look at moonshining, and Robert Mitchum's portrayal won the hearts of libertarians everywhere. Perhaps the greatest drive-in film ever. When it played in my hometown,by sunset the line of cars stretched down to the 4 Mile Bridge. Forgive the personal reference, but hey, this was a personal film- there may be more of Mitchum in this role, than any other.

Paired with Jane Russell, Mitchum heats up the screen in this noir set in the Orient. Nicholas Ray replaced Von Sternberg at the helm, and the result is not "The Hanging Gardens of Babylon" to quote Mitchum as he looks up Jane's dress, but "it's not bad". Not bad indeed!
PursuedPursued
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $7.86
In this noir Western, Mitchum displays all his gifts, including his singing, as he serenades the always lovely Teresa Wright. This is what stars sound like. He projects a charisma that foretells the coming of Elvis, and the age of rock and roll.

Where Danger Lives / Tension (Film Noir Double Feature)Where Danger Lives / Tension (Film Noir Double Feature)

In John Farrow's Where Danger Lives Mitchum is on the run, losing Faith along the way. An underrated noir.

In the same way Streisand's forceful personality overwhelmed all her costars except Redford, Monroe's sexuality did the same to all her male co-stars but Mitchum. In this rousing frontier adventure, Mitchum is so assured, that neither Monroe nor Preminger can bring him down. This is what stars look like.

1970 David Lean. Mitchum was great at accents but Lean's pictorialism overwhelms the fragile story.
