![]() | The Painted Veil
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $4.90 Yes I am saying that this was the best of all the 2006 movies. This movie has it all: Wonderful cinematography thanks to idyllic Chinese locations and sumptious period production, continually twisting and gripping narrative thanks to Somerset Maughum's story and just plain addictive precision delivery by a strong cast headed by Norton and Watts who just sizzle in their roles. Yes. I like it.
|
![]() | Little Children
Buy new: $6.49 / Used from: $1.89 A wonderfully twisted, even sardonic tale of relationships exploring how fragile they are and we all are and how easy it is to flirt with disaster. The movie forces us to boldly examine taboo topics. Its structured like Crash and themed like American Beauty. Powerful acting performances further enhance.
|
![]() | Miss Potter
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $7.40 The story itself may be light and even whimsical but the subject matter is solid and the performances enchanting as you would expect from the seasoned, talented cast. Ultimately uplifting story of a lady who had a far greater benevolent impact on our lives than I had even realized until watching this.
|
![]() | Amazing Grace
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $2.40 As with Miss Potter, I am grateful that the life and work of such incredible, oft unsung people such as these is credited with a high quality biopic - that we can see their stories centuries later. yet another great ensemble cast bring the uplifting story of the wonderful William Wilberforce to life.
|
![]() | Notes on a Scandal
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $0.50 Deliciously twisted journey through the petty wickedness and flaws of very ordinary people. Masterpiece of orginality played inevitably well given the cast.
|
![]() | Zodiac (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $0.70 Not to be confused with 'The Zodiac' released not a year earlier, this movie offers a much more in-depth study of the crimes and investigations of this notorious serial killer. Why I prefer this over the other is it seems closer to all the events of the investigation and offers the most credible resolution to this case which still is officially unsolved.
|
![]() | Perfume - The Story Of A Murderer
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $5.25 As I reflect on this movie, I'm encouraged to assert it was clearly one of the better movies of the year. Certainly in terms of originality, an important factor for me, it was a total winner and that's tough for a murder mystery, especially one that's hardly mysterious. Just a great story, well performed, wonderful locations wonderfully photographed - formula for success!
|
![]() | Fracture (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $0.97 It would seem that Fracture is to thrillers what 'The Monkees' are to pop music: A carefully contrived fabrication including all the obvious ingredients for success. Nonetheless this formula piece works as it proves it very hard to fail once you have the likes of Anthony Hopkins as menacing superiority cast against Ryan Gosling as wise-cracking prodigy.
|
![]() | The Queen
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $1.84 The story is a small fragment taken from the life of its subject but what a fragment - certainly the most significant in recent times. It is played for us by a very able cast but way above all else is the performance of Helen Mirren who frankly shows herself here to be simply in a different league to everybody else in her profession. Incredible.
|
![]() | The Night Listener
Buy new: $24.99 / Used from: $0.78 I am starting to see a pattern in my selections now. Are you? Strong story and strong cast in a relationship story preferably with lots of twists - this seem to be the wining formula for movies to make the grade with me. Armistead Maupin is the master storyteller here with the wonderful Toni Collette and dependable Robin Williams acting it out. No spoilers-just watch it.
|
![]() | The Return (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $4.99 / Used from: $0.05 My favorite genres are comedy, horror and sci-fi. So why is the highest ranking movie from these genres down at #9 on my list? Quality. It has dropped year on year since they're the easiest money-spinners- Hollywood just got LAZY. Lamentable but true. This is not a great story, not even very original - just gives priority to mindplay over body count.
|
![]() | Why We Fight
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $4.29 This documentary explores a gloomy warning delivered to the U.S. by Dwight D. Eisenhower and how, on so many levels, it has come true and the impact that has had on the States (and the world) over the past 45 years. It is a must-see.
|
![]() | Sicko (Special Edition)
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $2.72 Okay- technically it should not be on this list because Sicko is a movie I saw in the theater as soon as it was released being a big Michael Moore fan. It's another must-see documentary not as strictly partisan as some of Moore's other offerings but delivering a very important message to the American people about the sorry state of healthcare in this country.
|
![]() | The Gift
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $0.78 Blanchett's versatility, considering I just got done reviewing 'Notes on a Scandal' for this list, continues to dazzle. Great plot and one of the better spook shows of the year.
|
![]() | Wind Chill
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $1.99 Nicely done - between The Return, The Gift and this one, my faith in a good old fashioned horror movie is slowly being restored.
|
![]() | Clerks II (Two-Disc Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $0.90 Kevin Smith is rising in the ranks of my favorite comedy directors. All the old favorites are back in this movie Smith claims he enjoyed making the most.
|
![]() | Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $1.49 Put simply, I'm a huge Jack Black fan and so as with Michael Moore, Jack's movies get preferential treatment from me. This was not really the best comedy of the bunch but because it was JB doing his favorite thing, it's an automatic hit with me.
|
![]() | Superbad (Unrated Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $1.93 You know how you see trailers for movies and think "That looks good" and hope it's as good as you anticipated when you finally get to watch it? This was my most anticipated comedy of the year and it did not disappoint!
|
![]() | Meet the Robinsons
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $2.53 Sweet story did a better job of satisfying my craving for comedy and sci-fi than just about any movie in either of those genres in 2006!
|
![]() | Casino Royale (2-Disc Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $5.49 / Used from: $2.29 I'm not an action movie fan and I've not been a James Bond fan since I was about 12 years old ("The Man With the Golden Gun" being the last Bond movieI was enthusiastic enough to see in the theater) but I agree with my brother on this: CR is refreshingly loyal to the Fleming book and Craig is the quintissential Bond - may even oust Connery.
|
![]() | Knocked Up (Unrated Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $1.99 (2007). As with 'Superbad' a much anticipated movie based on the trailer and further supported by the great reviews. Was actually even better than I expected in terms of witty dialogue and some originality. Still didn't warrant a top 10 placing though as comedies should given my taste.
|
![]() | The Namesake
Buy new: $4.99 / Used from: $1.99 |
![]() | The Last Mimzy (Widescreen Infinifilm Edition)
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $1.94 Light sci-fi fantasy for the family well performed from an original if lightweight story. Once again I have to look on the family shelf to get original sci-fi worth watching this year. Too bad.
|
![]() | The TV Set
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $0.75 |
![]() | The Simpsons Movie (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.99 (2007) Pretty much standard Simspsons fare topically themed on environment earned a spot in my list because once upon a time I was a huge Simpsons fan but that was over 10 years ago in the early days. Now they seem to have outstayed their welcome.
|
![]() | Futurama - Bender's Big Score
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $2.47 (2007) As with The Simpsons, I WAS a huge fan but now we're just recycling the same old jokes and so unlike the opinion of the characters in this movie, I think that possibly those idiots at Fox who cancelled the series might have had the right idea.
|
![]() | Breaking and Entering
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $1.00 |
![]() | The Lookout
Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $1.29 |
![]() | Mr. Brooks
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $1.44 Trailer looked good if formulaic. Like Fracture it was somewhat contrived and formulaic but also like Fracture it was pleasantly better than it could have been. The story was a little more twisted than expected, Costner was reliable if unspectacular in his role and I think mostly the pace kept this watchable in the end.
|
![]() | The U.S. vs. John Lennon
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $4.88 Not the first look at this topic but satisfactorily in-depth and even managed to show me what John Lennon was really all about better than all former documentaries. I came away much more sympathetic with Lennon's cause and life than I already was mainly because it gave me a reater understanding of the early stages of his life with Yoko.
|
![]() | The Holiday
Buy new: $5.49 / Used from: $2.58 Light comedy "chic flick" I would normally avoid for a couple of years but for the great cast of Diaz, Winslett and of course most notably Jack (albeit in the least of the four main roles). Also, I loved the portrayal of the snug English cottage in the snowy Surrey village - even though I know its rare and largely unrealistic- it still made me homesick!
|
![]() | Slither (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $0.88 The best of the big horror offerings of 2006 (even though I personally preferred the direction and spooky story of The Return) was at the very least original in its attempt to give us as many different horror genres in one movie as possible. There WAS a body count but at least there was an attempt at an original story. Kudoes for that at least.
|
![]() | The Hoax
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $0.40 Drawn to this by the good reviews I liked it better than expected even though it was a little lightweight. Apart from Molina, the stars are not really my favorite (the only movie I really enjoyed Gere in was The Mothman Prophecy) as they don't typically appear in movies I enjoy but this one is an exception. Watch it for the story alone and you'll like it.
|
![]() | The Last King of Scotland (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $1.00 Although Forest Whitaker definitely earned his oscar here, the film was surprisingly less about Idi Amin than the main character - the fictional Scottish Doctor - a fact which disappointed ultimately albeit throwing an interesting lens on Amin's despotic regime.
|
![]() | The Reaping
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $0.36 |
![]() | Lucky Number Slevin (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $1.68 |
![]() | Pan's Labyrinth
Buy new: $7.49 / Used from: $1.95 Perhaps my most anticipated DVD though good was marred (to me- sue me if its not an intellectual thing to say) by subtitles and was not quite what I expected BUT, that said, it was still very good.
|
![]() | Hannibal Rising (Unrated Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $1.48 |
![]() | Sunshine
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $2.79 Danny Boyle continues to prove his versatility as well as his accute familiarity with the darker sides of the human psyche.
|
![]() | 28 Weeks Later (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $1.97 At least as good as the first movie.
