Blackmail/Easy VirtueBlackmail/Easy Virtue

The fact is for Region 1 DVD players, there are no good transfers of Hitchcock's first talkie, 1929's "Blackmail". Thus one open source for this film is as good as another. Included is Hitch's 1927 silent "Easy Virtue" so you can see how he transitioned from silent to sound. The UK release "The Early Hitchcock Collection" is what I recommend for those that can play R2 DVDs.
All Quiet on the Western Front (Universal Cinema Classics)All Quiet on the Western Front (Universal Cinema Classics)

1930 film about a German college student during World War I who is brainwashed into enlisting in the Army by a zealot college professor. Once on the front lines, he quickly discovers that the glory of the Fatherland is of little concern to a soldier dodging bullets & explosions, whose comrades are dying in his arms. As powerful in its way as Platoon was almost 60 years later.

M - 2 Disc Special Edition - Criterion CollectionM - 2 Disc Special Edition - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $15.75
It is one of the first films (1931) about serial killers, and already Lang goes beyond depicting the pathology of such criminal; what M examines is the pathology of our contemporary society of urbanization, mass politics, and mass media: it's also a film about a 20th century metropolis of mass society and mass media culture.
TCM Archives - Forbidden Hollywood Collection, Vol. 1 (Waterloo Bridge [1931] / Baby Face / Red-Headed Woman)TCM Archives - Forbidden Hollywood Collection, Vol. 1 (Waterloo Bridge [1931] / Baby Face / Red-Headed Woman)
Buy new: $15.60 / Used from: $12.98
Here are three films of the early 30's that couldn't and wouldn't have been made at any other time. Contrary to popular belief, the history of Hollywood permissiveness, what filmmakers could "get away with" on screen, is not a steadily rising graph from puritanical early days to the party-hearty present.
The Busby Berkeley Collection (Footlight Parade / Gold Diggers of 1933 / Dames / Gold Diggers of 1935 / 42nd Street)The Busby Berkeley Collection (Footlight Parade / Gold Diggers of 1933 / Dames / Gold Diggers of 1935 / 42nd Street)
Buy new: $23.39 / Used from: $26.99
Berkeley revived the movie musical after a series of bad entries killed it in 1931. Berkeley's genius is conveyed by the various expert commentaries, but even their unbounded enthusiasm seems to fall short of the man's towering vision, and staggering achievement. Berkeley's talent was really geometric thinking more than dance.
Trouble in Paradise - Criterion CollectionTrouble in Paradise - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $35.49 / Used from: $21.90
1932 film is the supreme example of "the Lubitsch touch," that mastery of comic timing, diamond-cutter precision, and Continental sophistication. A pair of prodigiously talented, utterly charming scoundrels (Herbert Marshall, Miriam Hopkins) become personal assistants to an aristocratic Parisian widow (Kay Francis). Their target is her fortune.
The Complete Thin Man Collection (The Thin Man / After the Thin Man / Another Thin Man / Shadow of the Thin Man / The Thin Man Goes Home / Song of the Thin Man / Alias Nick and Nora)The Complete Thin Man Collection (The Thin Man / After the Thin Man / Another Thin Man / Shadow of the Thin Man / The Thin Man Goes Home / Song of the Thin Man / Alias Nick and Nora)
Buy new: $23.39 / Used from: $29.95
The first 2 Thin Man movies were the best, but the other 4 are good films too. Great chemistry between the two leads William Powell & Myrna Loy, plus some good detective stories. Takes the couple from being NYC high rollers in 1934, through parenthood, into the verge of middle age with their last film. The series is a good example of how film adapted to the motion picture code.

Buy new: $75.49 / Used from: $54.99
When you see her and hear her on the screen, you are in the presence of a very Old Soul neither feminine or masculine but a conglomeration of elements unique unto itself. Garbo was one of the few silent stars to transition very succcessfully to the talking era.

Each of these is the somewhat definitive version of the Universal monster stable, before camp took over. The main exception to this is Phantom of the Opera. The Lon Chaney version of the phantom remains the archetype. Each DVD is packed with features, including a special documentary for each monster type per disk. Somewhat pricey, though.

Buy used from: $99.00
This is a somewhat oddly matched set (one Lombard black comedy, one screwball comedy with Harlow, one sophisticated comedy/drama with Harlow, and three Hepburn titles - a screwball, a drawing room comedy, and a film that is more of a drama than a comedy) but they are all outstanding films.

Buy new: $24.99 / Used from: $39.99
Capra was an idealist, to be sure, and such wide-eyed optimism as a world view might be foreign to modern day audiences, but there is no denying the universal appeal inherent in the films of Frank Capra. Long considered one our finest directors, Capra won three directing Oscars and all of those films are included here.

Timeless fantasy brought to the screen in 1939. It is so easy to forget that Judy Garland is acting because her big eyes, wide smile, innocence, and voice are Dorothy. This collection is perfect example of films containing the hope to bring one's self up to a higher level, the un-acceptableness of divorce, the rich wanting to experience poverty, a mistake starting as disaster but bringing life to the unhappy, how we see ourselves, how we see others, and the true essence of love the way poets write about are contained in these films.

If this 1941 film is not the best of the century it is certainly one of them. Its influence on a generation of filmmakers cannot be ignored in the equation. People who watch this film and ask, "What's the big deal?" are comparing it with modern films that have borrowed from this film's techniques and undergone 60 years of evolution.

Double Indemnity (Universal Legacy Series)Double Indemnity (Universal Legacy Series)
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $14.98
There are several titles that always come to mind when discussing Film Noir, and 1944's "Double Indemnity" is one of those great titles. It's the story of insurance salesman Walter Neff (Fred MacMurray) who knocks on the door of sultry Phyllis Dietrichson (Barbara Stanwyck) one fateful afternoon.
The Lost WeekendThe Lost Weekend
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $5.92
I can understand why the studio did not want to release "The Lost Weekend" in 1945: it's a gritty and realistic (sometimes horrifyingly so) account of an alcoholic's weekend binge. Going against years of movies that portrayed drunkeness as something cute and harmless, this movie pulls no punches in illustrating to what depths a man will stoop when he just has to have a drink.
The Best Years of Our LivesThe Best Years of Our Lives
Buy used from: $12.95
The story focuses on three war veterans (Fredric March, Dana Andrews, and Harold Russell) and their rocky readjustment to civilian life. One is a bank executive, another a pilot in the war who is only a soda jerk in civilian life, the third a former high school athlete whose hands were amputated as the result of a war injury. Perfectly captures the mood of the post-war era.

This collection is not only some of Joan Crawford's best work, these are some of the best women's films from a period where women were really appreciated in film. It was not just the strong stars, it was the stories and casting. The style was heavy-handed by today's standards, but Joan Crawford took acting risks all the way.
