'Winky Dink & You' ran from 1953-57. The kit that comes with this was originally created to assist kid viewers with writing on their television screens @ home, along with the show's host Jack Barry. Interesting, huh? Mae Questel(voice of 1930's Betty Boop cartoons) provided the voice of the cartoon title character.

'The Mighty Mouse Playhouse' was on TV from 1955-66. Mighty Mouse, a Paul Terry Terrytoon for 20th Century Fox, originated during the war years.

'Heckle and Jeckle' was also a Paul Terry Terrytoon, televised from 56-60 in its orignal run, often popping up on TV later. I was lucky enough to see one of the return engagements when I was a child. The magpies are simply hilarious.

The original 'Alvin Show' ran for two seasons in 1962.

'The Bullwinkle Show'(1962-73) was a spinoff of 'Rocky and His Friends'. A mix of ironic humor, metaphor, and socio-political satire were its calling card, as it followed the misadventures of Rocket('Rocky')J. Squirrel-who could fly-& his rather dimwitted, awkward pal Bullwinkle the moose. Jay Ward was its creator(Cap'n Crunch ads). Bullwinkle also made an attempt @ prime time.

'The Hector Heathcote Show' ran for two seasons in 1963.

Casper the Friendly Ghost was one of those animated characters that probably became quite tiresome by the end of his run. Originating as a Harvey/Famous cartoon for theatrical shorts for Paramount Pictures, 'The New Casper Cartoon Show' was telecast from 1963-69. It costarred other cinema cohorts Wendy the Good Little Witch, Nightmare the Horse, and the Ghostly Trio.

'The Porky Pig Show'was busy recycling the same Warner Bros. shorts as 'The Bugs Bunny Show'. This one ran from 1964-67.

Tom and Jerry are easily the most famous cat and mouse team ever, created by Hanna-Barbera when the animation duo was just starting out @ MGM. In the war years, MGM often took the Oscar for Academy Award-winning animated short. Although seen for years on Sunday mornings, the 'Tom & Jerry Show' was broadcast on Saturdays in 1965 and, again, in the late 70s.

Saturday mornings saw reruns of the first successful animated prime-time show, having lasted a few seasons in the evening timeslot. 'The Flintstones' ran on Saturdays from 1966-69. Mel Blanc voiced Barney Rubble and Bea Benaderet('The George Burns & Gracie Allen Show', 'Petticoat Junction') voiced Betty Rubble.

A forgotten early superhero entry in a time slot that would eventually be ridden with the type, 'Marvel Superheroes' was a 1966 fairly crude, low-budget umbrella series, starring a different hero each week. The list included Captain America, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, The Mighty Thor, and the Sub-Mariner.

This 1966-67 series is where Filmation started with TV animation, revered by some and mocked by others. The original companion segment was Superboy(not included here), but once the show returned as 'Superman/Aquaman Hour', other heroes Aqualad, the Flash, Green Lantern, and the Teen Titans appeared. Superman would later appear with Batman(see below) and on 'Super Friends'.

'Frankenstein Jr. & the Impossibles'(1966-68) was, along with 'Space Ghost', Hanna-Barbera's debut of their stylish Alex Toth-designed shows. Brilliant boy scientist Buzz Conroy activated the giant robot Frankenstein Jr. when menace threatened. The Impossibles were the extra segment. 'Space Ghost/Frankenstein Jr.' was a 1976 Saturday hour, with reruns of these earlier shows.

This 1967 series had a shorter run than most but less to poor ratings than violent content, @ the dawning of the moral majority and political correctness period. Ironically, the character returned in the 90s as attorney Harvey Birdman, assisting cartoons in need of counsel.

The classic animated Hanna-Barbera original, 1967-70, is still considered the best adaptation of the popular Marvel comic(especially with the poor results of the recent film). Alex Toth, as always, adds panache to the show's design. However, its tacky 1978 return, with Johnny Storm replaced by a silly robot, fairly represents the peak of Saturday morning's moral majority.

Largely accepted as the best Hanna-Barbera series of all time, the show's first run was from 1967-72, then 79-81. Tim Matheson('Animal House') voiced the title character.

One of the very first prime-time animated series, appearing in 1961, six years later it began a run on Saturday mornings. An early TV comic, Arnold Stang('The Buick-Berle Hour'), voiced the title character. Stang would later appear together with one of the other voice actors, Marvin Kaplan(TV's 'Alice'), in the epic film comedy 'It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World'.
