![]() | The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference by Malcolm Gladwell
Buy new: $7.50 / Used from: $4.00 About as interesting as a statistic filled, non-fiction book can get. A well-done theory on how epidemics get started--whether it be the next fashion fad, teen smoking, children's TV shows, etc, etc. Plenty of interesting stories here and companies and people that everyone is familiar with... 4 Stars

![]() | Horseman, Pass By : A Novel by Larry McMurtry
Buy new: $9.36 / Used from: $5.31 McMurtry's first novel that was adapted into the Paul Newman film "Hud." The story of Lonnie and his life in a small town living with his grandparents, some ranch hands, a cook, and a mean, drunk half-uncle. It's a look at old ways vs. youth culture that's still relevant today. 4 Stars

![]() | Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs: A Low Culture Manifesto by Chuck Klosterman
Buy new: $9.89 / Used from: $5.70 A series of essays on pop culture. Some are funny and some might remind you of things you (or your friends) have discussed. There are a couple of stand out pieces, like when Klosterman goes to see a Guns'n'Roses cover band...but a little Klosterman goes a long way and you might tire of his views on everything before you finish. I did. 3 Stars

![]() | Mysteries of Pittsburgh: A Novel (P.S.) by Michael Chabon
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $2.54 Excellent, excellent, excellent story that's part comedy, part tragedy, and part coming-of-age novel...with some gangsters thrown in just for fun. Chabon's first book isn't his best known but it is a completely absorbing story. 5 Stars

![]() | The Palace Thief: Stories by Ethan Canin
Buy new: $11.16 / Used from: $2.39 A collection of longer short stories that are easy to read. The title story is the best. 3 Stars

![]() | Lullaby by Chuck Palahniuk
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $4.49 This one isn't that thick, the print is large, and there are lots of page breaks since chapters are rarely more than 5 pages. And still it felt like it wouldn't end. At times the writing is gripping, but the story doesn't add up to much. Palahniuk has a tendency to rely on gimmicks in his writing...it may have seemed original and endearing in "Fight Club," but now.... 3 Stars

![]() | Little Children: A Novel by Tom Perrotta
Buy new: $11.16 / Used from: $0.01 This story is about a child molester who moves into a suburban neighborhood, but it's also about an affair between two bored, married people in their late-twenties who aren't happy with the way things are going in their lives. It's an enjoyable read, even if it seems that author isn't always sure of whether or not he's trying to be satirical. 4 Stars

![]() | The Secret History by Donna Tartt
Buy new: $10.85 / Used from: $0.93 Implausible yet completely engrossing story of a group of students studying Greek at a New England liberal arts school. This book isn't flawless--the plot is implausible at times--but the story is excellent and so is the writing. 5 Stars

![]() | Hey Nostradamus!: A Novel by Douglas Coupland
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $1.49 I'm not sure I like the way this was structured--the story was delivered in 4 narratives from 4 different characters. But it was an interesting, sad story about a school shooting and how it touched the lives of people. 4 Stars

![]() | TEXASVILLE : A Novel by Larry McMurtry
Buy new: $10.80 / Used from: $2.79 This is the vastly inferior sequel to "The Last Picture Show," which focuses on the character of Duane, now 48 years old, married, and successful. It's not a bad book--once you get into it there is some charm and depth. The problem is it takes you 100 to 150 pages to sort through all the zany characters and actually get a feel for what's going on. 3 Stars

![]() | The Final Solution: A Story of Detection (P.S.) by Michael Chabon
Buy new: $9.35 / Used from: $0.21 |
![]() | Story of My Life by Jay McInerney
Buy new: $10.40 / Used from: $0.01 Hard to get into because of the first person narrative that resorts to 1980's New York party girl dialect....

![]() | A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $1.30 Easy to jump into at first, though the quirks might get old after hundreds of pages....
|
![]() | Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $1.48 A series of vignettes about common characters who are mostly drug addicts living in Scotland. Not the easiest read, since the author chose to stick to regional dialect. 5 stars

![]() | Mystic River by Dennis Lehane
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $0.01 For genre fiction, it's pretty great. Sometimes the author tries to get a little too cute with metaphors and so forth and strays off course, but when it's gritty, it's good. 4 stars

![]() | Prep: A Novel by Curtis Sittenfeld
Buy used from: $0.01 Not terrible, but I never really cared about the narrator. In fact, I thought she was a bit of a whiner. And the story didn't go any where. 3 stars
