Buy new: Too low to display A 500-GB portable drive is an excellent choice for offsite storage of digital images and other space-consuming files. The compact size of this drive and its portable nature make it a good choice for people who take a lot of high-res photos when traveling, because it's easily hooked up to a notebook or netbook along with one's digital camera.

Buy new: $119.77 / Used from: $119.99 This is my main notebook archive device because of its quality and array of connections. I wiped it and configured it for my Mac and set it as my Time Machine (programmable automated Mac backup utility similar to Retrospect, another great backup tool). I use the FireWire configuration to keep my USB ports free for other devices.

![]() | Western Digital My Passport Essential 250 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive (Intense Blue)
Buy used from: $84.95 I like Western Digital's self-powered 250-GB drives for routine backups and travel ... and let's face it, getting storage devices in candy-shop colors is both fun and functional. How about black for midweek backups (call that Set A) and blue for your weekend backups (call that set B)? The white drive is easy to spot in your camera or gear bag when you're on the road.

![]() | Kingston DataTraveler 8 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive DT100/8GB
Buy new: $17.30 Flash drives, also nicknamed thumb drives because of their handy size, have become so inexpensive that everyone should have a couple on hand. I keep one in my computer bag for easy file-swapping with friends and colleagues -- no wires, no operating system compatibility issues, no fuss. Don't expect them to last forever; replace after a couple years' heavy use.

![]() | Kingston DataTraveler 4 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive DT100/4GB
Buy new: $12.04 / Used from: $7.77 These little guys are excellent storage units for your personal data. Please give yourself the peace of mind of not storing any personal financial information on your home computer or on backup drives or discs not kept under lock and key. Although a larger size is fine, confining your confidential data to a 4GB stick may help you self-edit so you have fewer files over which to keep watch.

![]() | TDK 16X DVD+R 100PK Spindle
Buy new: $28.08 100 DVDs sounds like a lot, but it's wise to buy in bulk, because you'll find yourself enjoying the ability to burn what you want without pinching pennies or having to use multiple CDs for a single project. Make sure to watch the + or - on your burner's specs. Great for sharing snaps with the family or for taking down to a photo-processing place for enlargements or photo books.

![]() | Memorex 16X DVD-R (100-Pack Spindle)
Buy new: $23.98 "Redundant backups" is a phrase I live by. I make backup data sets on hard drives and also use DVDs for longer-term archiving. Yep, that means lots of files, but storage media do act up, so I reduce my risk by using both hard drives and optical media. Make a backup set of precious images and other files to store with a relative or in a safe-deposit box.

![]() | Multi-color CD/DVD Sleeves
Buy new: $7.32 / Used from: $0.99 CDs and DVDs will last longer if stored carefully. Jewel cases are all right but I prefer sleeves because there's less stress on the disc if it's not being snapped on or pulled off a center ring ... plus, sleeves save space. You can write on sleeves to your heart's content without shortening your discs' life span. Using a pen on discs is a no-no, a lesson I learned the hard way.

![]() | Taiyo Yuden - 100 x DVD-R - 4.7 GB 16x - silver - thermal transfer printable surface - spindle - storage media
Buy new: $36.90 These highly regarded DVDs are worth their cost for files you plan to keep for multiple years. If you take lots of photos, think of these as equivalent to those old Kodachrome or Ektachrome slides or your 35mm negatives. If budget is an issue, Taiyo Yuden also makes DVDs with slower write speeds.

![]() | Taiyo Yuden Shiny Silver 16X DVD+R Media 100 Pack in Cake Box
Buy new: $44.99 As mentioned above, it's worth spending the extra money on high-end DVDs that you anticipate hanging onto. When buying DVDs, you pay a bit more for faster top writing speed. These are 16x; you can save a little by buying 8x discs. It's important to check your DVD burner's specs for top speed and also to see whether you need DVD-R or DVD+R (these are the latter). Some drives can use both types.
