A Woman is a Woman - Criterion CollectionA Woman is a Woman - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $27.49 / Used from: $15.79
This is Godard at his warmest, funniest best. A Woman is a Woman is also his valentine to Karina, who looks luminous here in her cream beret and red tights. It's one of my favorite films of all-time. Remember to boycott women who don't cry!
Francois Truffaut's Adventures of Antoine Doinel (The 400 Blows / Antoine & Collette / Stolen Kisses / Bed & Board / Love on the Run) - Criterion CollectionFrancois Truffaut's Adventures of Antoine Doinel (The 400 Blows / Antoine & Collette / Stolen Kisses / Bed & Board / Love on the Run) - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $73.49 / Used from: $54.00
Absolutely worth the eighty bucks. The 400 Blows is a masterpiece, of course, but also check out the superb Stolen Kisses.
The Lady Eve - Criterion CollectionThe Lady Eve - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $30.49 / Used from: $22.64
One of the defining films of the screwball comedy era.
The 39 Steps (Criterion Collection Spine #56)The 39 Steps (Criterion Collection Spine #56)
Buy new: $32.49 / Used from: $14.99
British Hitchcock is the best Hitchcock! The 39 Steps is a classic comic thriller, and it hints at the 'wrong man' theme Hitchcock would later explore in greater detail in 1959's North by Northwest.
Pierrot le Fou - Criterion CollectionPierrot le Fou - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $35.49 / Used from: $18.90
Karina and Belmondo reunite in this Godard classic of love-on-the-run. The 'Ma Ligne de Chance' number is one of the most joyous moments in all of cinema, and the ending is mind-blowing...literally.
The Red Shoes - Criterion CollectionThe Red Shoes - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $32.49 / Used from: $18.50
This movie is solely responsible for making me want to become a ballerina.
My Man Godfrey - Criterion CollectionMy Man Godfrey - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $35.99 / Used from: $19.00
Possibly the definitive screwball comedy. My Man Godfrey earned Lombard her only Oscar nod, and rightfully so--she's in fine form, running the emotional gamut from A to Z. 'Godfrey, did you see his cheekbones?'
Band of Outsiders - Criterion CollectionBand of Outsiders - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $24.99 / Used from: $15.00
Godard always tended to borrow heavily from the crime genre, which is fully evident in Band of Outsiders. It's the tale of two petty thieves and a lonely, melancholy schoolgirl, who fill their days dancing in cafes and racing through the Louvre. It's a classic of the New Wave, and one of my personal favorites.
Trouble in Paradise - Criterion CollectionTrouble in Paradise - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $32.49 / Used from: $21.92
Classic Lubitsch. Hopkins is hilarious here.
Notorious - Criterion CollectionNotorious - Criterion Collection
Buy used from: $25.00
Contains the best kiss ever committed to celluloid.
Heaven Can Wait (Criterion Collection)Heaven Can Wait (Criterion Collection)
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $17.20
My favorite Lubitsch! And does Gene Tierney look stunning in Technicolor, or what?
Sullivan's Travels - Criterion CollectionSullivan's Travels - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $27.99 / Used from: $17.53
Possibly my favorite film of the studio era, and certainly Lake's best role. The scene where she meets McCrea in the diner is priceless. 'Get me ham and eggs before I bite you!'
Charade: The Criterion Collection (Widescreen Edition)Charade: The Criterion Collection (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $35.49 / Used from: $16.50
Who doesn't love Audrey? She looks beautiful here in her Givenchy pillbox hats, and Cary Grant is at his witty best. Sure, it's Hitchcock-lite, but who cares? A top-notch comic suspense thriller by Donen.
I Know Where I'm Going! - Criterion CollectionI Know Where I'm Going! - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $35.99 / Used from: $21.99
Romantic comedy done right.
Breathless - Criterion CollectionBreathless - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $35.49 / Used from: $24.95
One of the most influential films ever made. The jazzy soundtrack, Jean Seberg's New York Herald Tribune shirt, Belmondo's ginormous cigarettes, that great final bit of dialogue...what's not to love?
The Lady Vanishes - Criterion CollectionThe Lady Vanishes - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $27.99 / Used from: $15.00
This movie just makes me happy. Maybe it's not one of Hitchcock's deeper, psychologically-twisted films, but it's still a hell of a watch.
Eclipse Series 8 - Lubitsch Musicals (The Love Parade / The Smiling Lieutenant / One Hour with You / Monte Carlo) (Criterion Collection)Eclipse Series 8 - Lubitsch Musicals (The Love Parade / The Smiling Lieutenant / One Hour with You / Monte Carlo) (Criterion Collection)
Buy new: $53.99 / Used from: $34.99
The best of the bunch is probably The Smiling Lieutenant, but they're all amazing. Have I mentioned that I freaking love Lubitsch?
Stage and Spectacle - Three Films by Jean Renoir (The Golden Coach / French Cancan / Elena and Her Men) - Criterion CollectionStage and Spectacle - Three Films by Jean Renoir (The Golden Coach / French Cancan / Elena and Her Men) - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $71.99 / Used from: $42.19
Mmm, Jean Renoir! My personal favorite here is French Can Can, but Elena and Her Men is also great.
Amarcord (Criterion Collection)Amarcord (Criterion Collection)
Buy new: $32.49 / Used from: $18.95
My favorite Fellini! It manages to be bawdy yet touching at the same time. It's like the American Pie of the art-house set.
Grey Gardens / The Beales of Grey Gardens - Criterion Collection (2-disc set)Grey Gardens / The Beales of Grey Gardens - Criterion Collection (2-disc set)
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $36.81
Oh, man, is this a trip! It's sad, funny, and crazy, all at the same time. Big Edie is hilarious, and Little Edie could teach a philosophy class.
