Buy used from: $19.89 Great painter with a great graphic quality. If you want to learn to paint with thick, bold strokes studying this book should help. It is especially helpful if you want to learn to use the palette knife since Smith uses it exclusively.

Buy new: $65.00 / Used from: $50.00 This well written and beautifully illustrated volume is both practical and inspiring, without being pretentious like many books professing to reveal the mysteries of painting. If an aspect of painting remains a mystery Johnson doesn't gloss over the fact, but encourages working with paint to understand the ineffable.

Buy new: $32.97 / Used from: $45.67 The painters in the Group of Seven are all individuals but have a similar feeling for design and grand compositions. This book has beautiful, large reproductions and it lets the paintings do the talking with over 400 finely reproduced color images. A little expensive but if you love powerfully composed, colorful landscapes, this book is for you.

Buy new: $27.32 / Used from: $20.00 This book is a compendium of interesting letters, articles, and essays concerning Inness, interspersed with a few reproductions. I don't recommend this book for the art but this is the best book for text. Of special interest is the essay by Inness' son about Inness' technique.

Buy used from: $139.94 This book is very useful to see how one artist paints with rich, broken color. The text is not a series of recipes so be prepared to bring your own interpretation and knowledge to the instruction.
Extremely useful if you want to learn to paint with thick, impressionistic strokes.

Buy used from: $195.00 This nicely bound volume has plenty of large reproductions. Although the quality of the work varies, which is expected given the large number of artists represented, there are some real gems here. But the wide variety of styles insures that there is something for everyone.
