Nikon D80 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera (Body only)Nikon D80 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera (Body only)
Buy used from: $493.98
The D40 and D60 are more consumerist types that can limit you in some ways, whereas the D80 mimics the body of some of the prosumer and higher level cameras. Everything is accessible and viewable on the top LCD, giving you constant information for your learning curve. The D80 can autofocus all Nikon Lenses, whereas the D40/D40x and D60 bodies do not focus non AF-S lenses.

Buy new: $369.00 / Used from: $280.00
The kit lens that normally comes with the D40/D40x, D60 are usually the 18-55mm VR. I would reccommend going for this 18-105mm VR, which can be found on the new D90 kits. This lens has a little more reach in terms of zoom and should be just enough for the starters. It is a good compromise if you do not want to spend $600+ for the 18-200mm VR which is the ultimate walkaround.
Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED IF AF-S DX VR [Vibration Reduction] Zoom Nikkor LensNikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED IF AF-S DX VR [Vibration Reduction] Zoom Nikkor Lens
Buy new: $219.95 / Used from: $195.99
If you want to hold on to your 18-55mm VR kit lens I would suggest picking this lens up because it lets you have that really good extra reach for a really great price. Grab this if you don't mind switching out your lens on the field.

It's great for portraits, as well as subjects that you want to focus on. It is an amazingly fast lens and works wonderfully in low light. This lens to me, is the one that you use to get all those amazingly moving photos you aspire to capture.
Nikon SB-400 AF Speedlight Flash for Nikon Digital SLR CamerasNikon SB-400 AF Speedlight Flash for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras

If you are like me, and just starting out, this is sufficient enough as you wouldn't want something you have no idea how to control or use. I use mine almost all the time with family and friends and it is non obtrusive (unlike the larger sb-600 and sb-800.)

A great pack for your computer and DSLR. This backpack doesn't over do it! It houses just enough and doesn't go overboard with compartments. I like this one in particular because it holds a computer and doesn't look too bulky (nor does it scream I HAVE A CAMERA).
