One of the more resilient animated series of the late 60s-70s was this adaptation of the long-running comic book that started in the early 50s. The show ran from 1968-76, with several format & title changes, & a couple failed resurrections in 77 and 87. The song 'Sugar, Sugar' became a pop hit. Everybody liked this show. 'Go-Go Gophers' was a cartoon from 1968 that took place in the old West, where two 'native' gophers battled Kit Coyote of the Cavalry.

Spinoff of 'Wacky Races' ran from 1969-71, following the exploits of World War I aerial racers Dick Dastardly and his canine copilot Muttley.

'H.R. Pufnstuf' was the first in a series of Krofft live-action shows where actors would become 'human puppets' with big heads. The 'trippy' appearance of the series didn't hurt its popularity with teens, either. The tragic Jack Wild starred in both this and a movie spinoff.

One of the most popular, longest running Saturday morning shows had been introduced in title sequences for the Peter Sellers Pink Panther films. 'The Pink Panther Show'(1969-78) included segments 'Ant & the Aardvark'(now available, as well) and 'The Inspector'(03-04-08). The weak final season is all that's missing on this DVD boxset. This is my favorite Saturday morning show.

'The Smokey the Bear Show'(1969) was adapted from U.S. Forest Service ads. There had also been a Rankin/Bass stop-motion TV special. Smokey was inspired by the actual cub that had been saved from a forest fire.

The animated 'Dr.Doolittle', inspired by the books and 1967 Rex Harrison film, ran on TV from 1970-72.

A cartoon about a female rock trio which ran from 1970-72, then 72-74 as 'Josie and the Pussycats in Outer Space'.

'The Woody Woodpecker Show'(1970-72) was a Saturday morning cartoon which broadcast the classic character's film shorts and episodes from an earlier 1950s TV series. Walter Lantz was the creator. Other characters were Andy Panda and Chilly Willy. This is one of my all-time favs.

'Sabrina & the Groovie Goolies' was a 1970 animated spinoff of 'The Archie Show'. In 1971, Sabrina and the Goolies split, with 'Sabrina the Teenage Witch' running from 1971-74 and another attempt in 77. Nearly 2 decades later, the non-animated Melissa Sue Hart prime time series debuted. On 04-29-08, the show will arrive on DVD. See Goolies below.

'The Jackson 5ive' was a 1971-73 animated series based on a popular black singing quintet of brothers. Michael Jackson was the youngest. All the voices were supplied by the brothers.

1971 spinoff of 'The Flintstones' cartoon that followed the kids from that show, now teenagers. It ran again 1974-76.

'The Brady Kids'(1972-74) was an animated series based on the kids from the network sitcom 'The Brady Bunch'.

'The Flintstones Comedy Hour'(1972-73) was a return to TV for the first prime-time animated family. This Saturday morning cartoon featured the teens Pebbles & Bamm Bamm, who'd had a shot @ their own show(& would again). The family of yesteryear would appear in other formats, with different titles, throughout the late 70s and into the 80s.

'Multiplication Rock'(1972) were the original animated shorts that would lead to the 'Schoolhouse Rock' shorts series. These were seen between the regularly scheduled cartoons throughout the Saturday morning. Previous similar briefs had included 'In the Know'(live short documentaries for kids) and 'In the News', news briefs for kids that ran about 8-10 times Saturday mornings, thru the 70s.

'The Addams Family' animated series(1973-75), adapted from the mid 60s network series of the same name, was one I really liked as a kid. It was made in England by Hanna-Barbera. There were comic book spinoffs and a later Saturday morning run, too, with new entries.

Educational shorts(1973-84) using music, shown between regularly scheduled cartoons. These have now become one of the most popular artifacts of Saturday mornings. Episodes included 'Conjunction Junction', 'Interplanetary Janet', 'Interjections', 'Three is a Magic Number', 'Electricity Electricity', and the renown 'I'm Just a Bill'.

'Speed Buggy' was a popular animated series(73-77) about a talking dune buggy, voiced by the man of 1,000 voices, Mel Blanc(Warner Brothers cartoons, 'The Flintstones', 'The Jetsons'). For several years, Blanc had voiced another automobile(though it didn't actually talk) on radio's ever-popular comedy show 'The Jack Benny Show', from the late 1930s & into the late 50s.

'Super Friends'(1973-77, although only 1 season of shows was created) is one of those cartoons that cannot really live up to its cult status. Although it was the one real Saturday morning superhero show during the early 70s, it's weak animation didn't help things(example: this is the only version of the decade-long run of this ever-changing series that has yet to see DVD light of day).

'The Hudson Brothers' Razzle Dazzle Show'(1974) was a live-action kids show that this musical trio hosted. No comment.
