The Wall (Deluxe Packaging Digitally Remastered)The Wall (Deluxe Packaging Digitally Remastered) by Pink Floyd
Buy new: $27.99 / Used from: $16.24
Pink Floyd's best. Take time to read about the meaning of the album after listening a few times. It will take on all new meaning. Great music and writing
Pink Floyd - The Wall 25th Anniversary (Deluxe Edition)Pink Floyd - The Wall 25th Anniversary (Deluxe Edition)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $10.97
Incredible movie about the causes and results of blocking out the rest of the world emotionally. Bob Geldof plays a great Pink. Read about the album/movie then watch again and again.
Master of PuppetsMaster of Puppets by Metallica
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $8.99
Cliff Burton's last and best album. It's so sad to think of what he could have helped produce if he was around all these years, and I don't think he would have put up with the likes of ReLoad and St. Anger. Welcome Home (Sanitarium) is the best on the album. Title track is epic, and Orion is another incredible instrumental, something Metallica should do more of.
Ride the LightningRide the Lightning by Metallica
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $5.21
Thrash metal perfected, while adding in the first slower song, "Fade to Black". Also very informative on many possible ways to die: being trapped under ice, suicide, electric chair, war, etc.
Dark Side Of The MoonDark Side Of The Moon by Pink Floyd
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $5.49
Just buy this if you don't have it. There is no explanation needed, and you won't regret it.
...And Justice for All...And Justice for All by Metallica
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $3.80
Although the bass is turned way down on this one to be spiteful of rookie Jason Newsted, this is another powerful must-own from Metallica. One word: One.
MetallicaMetallica by Metallica
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $3.01
Metallica's last truly great album. Lots of good hard rock, but as Billy Joel sings, they made them "cut it back to 3:09" a few too many times to get radio play instead of playing the epics that the fans love them for. I don't know whether to praise Bob Rock or curse him, but the results of a Rick Rubin produced album seem to be leading me to the latter.
Nirvana: Unplugged In New YorkNirvana: Unplugged In New York
Buy new: $9.97 / Used from: $6.99
Very emotional performance, great music, and a great way to remember Kurt Cobain. The covers are the best part of the album, with songs like "Oh Me", "Where Did You Sleep Last Night", and "Lake of Fire". The album will leave you emotionally drained in a good way.
Sabbath Bloody SabbathSabbath Bloody Sabbath by Black Sabbath
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.00
People unfamiliar with Black Sabbath would never believe that the melodies and graceful music coming from this album was created and played by the band that invented heavy metal. Not exactly a "Greatest Hits" album, but it would be if I ran the world.
Led ZeppelinLed Zeppelin by Led Zeppelin
Buy new: $62.99 / Used from: $20.00
4 Disc Set with all of the essential Led Zeppelin. If you don't have all Zeppelin albums and you're not a die hard fan, this set will suffice.
Kill 'Em AllKill 'Em All by Metallica
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $4.52
This is the kind of stuff we could have enjoyed if Dave Mustaine didn't ruin his chance with Metallica. Amazing album with speed metal not just for the sake of speed, but real talented writing and melody. The album is also broken up nicely by Cliff's masterpiece bass solo, "Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth)".
Back in BlackBack in Black by AC/DC
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $4.61
I still can't believe they could come back from the death of their lead singer with such greatness. This album is by far their best.
Kind of BlueKind of Blue by Miles Davis
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $2.49
Even if you aren't into jazz, you need to own this album. Just give it a chance and listen a few times. You'll begin to see why this is the most popular jazz album ever.
Appetite for DestructionAppetite for Destruction by Guns N' Roses
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $1.89
This album killed glam rock. Thank them by buying 2. Welcome to the Jungle, Paradise City, Mr. Brownstone... These are all instant classics that will be around in sports arenas and everywhere else for a long time.
NebraskaNebraska by Bruce Springsteen
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $3.70
And this is what Bruce is like without the E Street Band. The joy and party atmosphere is gone, but that is the only way Bruce could have made such an emotional album. If you like depressing music (and we all do sometimes), you need to give this a try. He was highly criticized when this was released, but only because people don't easily accept change.
Born to RunBorn to Run by Bruce Springsteen
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $2.79
The time and dedication Bruce put into this one really paid off. He knew it was make-it-or-break-it time and did he ever make it. You can feel his desire to produce greatness with each song on this album, from Born to Run to Jungleland. Must-own music
DookieDookie by Green Day
Buy new: $8.97 / Used from: $0.59
Green Day's peak. This one is just pure rock and roll fun not seen in any other band since AC/DC. I can't think of any other way to describe Green Day in the 90's since no other scene would claim them as their own (Punk, grunge, etc.)
Use Your Illusion IUse Your Illusion I by Guns N' Roses
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $1.49
November Rain - possibly the best song of the 1990s. Also has "Don't Cry" and a ton of other GnR classics.
Wish You Were HereWish You Were Here by Pink Floyd
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $8.46
"Shine on You Crazy Diamond" alone makes this worth it, and you can say the same for "Wish You Were Here". Oh yeah, and the remaining songs are also Floyd classics. Everyone should own this.
SuperunknownSuperunknown by Soundgarden
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $1.31
Heavy heavy Seattle rock with Chris Cornell. Black Hole Sun, My Wave, Fell on Black Days, The Day I Tried to Live, Limo Wreck. I get excited just thinking about the music.
Darkness on the Edge of TownDarkness on the Edge of Town by Bruce Springsteen
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $2.75
Could be Bruce's best album yet. Great writing and music in every song.
Garage, Inc.Garage, Inc. by Metallica
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $6.49
2 CDs, 2 very different CDs. But both are full of awesome hard rock. The first is all new covers, which is very good. It has hits like "Tuesday's Gone", "Turn the Page", and "Whiskey in the Jar". The second CD has their covers from the late 80's, including hits from New Wave of British Heavy Metal bands, like "Small Hours" and "Am I Evil?" This second CD is much harder.
The RiverThe River by Bruce Springsteen
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $11.39
Another Bruce classic, what can I say that hasn't been said before about a good 70's Springsteen album. You should own them all.
Death MagneticDeath Magnetic by Metallica
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $4.95
Much much better than St. Anger, Load, & ReLoad. At least they're trying to get back to their roots: heavy metal and trusting Kirk with long solos. They've even graced us with an instrumental for the first time in 20 years (if you count "To Live is to Die").
LoadLoad by Metallica
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $1.95
I was sad when I was listening to this in public, and a young girl mistook it for country. All in all a terrible album with one or two worthwhile songs. But hey, at least it's better than what was soon to come after.
S&MS&M by Metallica
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $4.55
People who consider themselves die hard Metallica fans put this one down just because they played with an orchestra, but the truth is that it sounds pretty cool, especially the new singles from the record. Definitely worth a listen.
CoreCore by Stone Temple Pilots
Buy new: $8.97 / Used from: $0.49
Another defining album of the grunge era. Truly original music with a hard sound.
The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street ShuffleThe Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle by Bruce Springsteen
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $2.97
Great use of a tuba and a fun atmosphere with a live music feeling. There is something truly innocent about the sound.
The Best of FuelThe Best of Fuel by Fuel
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $6.06
Underrated band from the 90's that unfortunately split up. I couldn't decide on which individual album to recommend, so I went with the Best of. Another very original sounding hard rock band with a unique and talented singer.
Atom Heart MotherAtom Heart Mother by Pink Floyd
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $6.98
If you're looking for singles, this one is not for you. But the music is original and incredible. Albums like this make me truly love listening to music. I always seem to play this album twice.
AnimalsAnimals by Pink Floyd
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.98
No real singles, but this is another Floyd classic that all die hard fans need. Great music and writing.
Songs You Know by Heart : Jimmy Buffett's Greatest Hit(s)Songs You Know by Heart : Jimmy Buffett's Greatest Hit(s) by Jimmy Buffett
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $0.13
I know this one doesn't really fit in with the rest of my list, but really, how can you argue with Jimmy Buffett. His music will always put you in a good mood, and he doesn't take himself too seriously, so there's no need to judge the lyrics or his antics. Great for summer parties.
Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. by Bruce Springsteen
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $2.05
Bruce's first real album with a ton of great songs. It's amazing that he was so good from the very beginning.
The RisingThe Rising by Bruce Springsteen
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $1.00
Sad and uplifting at the same time if you listen to all the lyrics. Also the first great album with the E Street Band in a long long time. It's good to have them back.
Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-NerdPronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd by Lynyrd Skynyrd
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $7.00
You need to own "Free Bird". As a bonus you get other greats like "Tuesday's Gone", "Simple Man", and the piano on "Things Goin' On".
MagicMagic by Bruce Springsteen
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $1.48
Really great album with Springsteen and the band. Good old rockin' Bruce as we knew him in the 70's, but with joy instead of depression.
Greatest HitsGreatest Hits by Neil Young
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $6.00
One of the best albums I own. Unfortunately, I went years without it, and I really regret it. There are so many great songs on this album and everyone needs to have it.
