My Top Albums of 2008
By an Amazon.com customer
WarpaintWarpaint by The Black Crowes
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $2.93
There’s one thing I have to say about Chris Robinson and company: they know how to deliver a comeback for studio releases (their last studio release was 2001’s “Lions”). This is one of the few best straight-up rock album releases in the past year. See my review for further details. Favorite track: Movin’ On Down the Line
Partie TraumaticPartie Traumatic by Black Kids
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $1.99
With a sound somewhat reminiscent of The Cure, this band walked away with what I consider the true best single of 2008. An influential and groundbreaking album for 2008. Favorite track: I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You
Viva La VidaViva La Vida by Coldplay
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $4.86
I’m not that big of a Coldplay fan, but the release of the single “Viva La Vida” is alone worth making this album one of the best of the year. It’s a damn near perfect song, written about something other than love and relationships. The group proved with this release that they are expanding. Favorite track: Viva La Vida
Gavin DeGrawGavin DeGraw by Gavin DeGraw
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $0.32
It took DeGraw five years to release his sophomore album! And was it worth it? Well, yes. Although not as catchy as his debut, this album still grows on you and contains songs that are catchy. While there wasn’t too much difference from his debut album, this new release still offers fans plenty of satisfying tracks to hold them over until his next release. Favorite track: Cheated On Me
UnfoldUnfold by Marié Digby
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $3.68
2008 saw PLENTY of young female pop artists all having top selling albums. However, it's ironic that the best of them all was one who had the lowest sales. Soon after debuting her version of “Umbrella” on YouTube, Digby was signed onto a record deal. She’s one of the few that writes her own songs and that makes her extremely talented. See my review for further details. Favorite track: Spell
RockferryRockferry by Duffy
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $2.00
Some blasted Welsh singer Duffy’s debut album but I found it quite delightful. It’s the kind of music you listen to on a lonely, rainy Sunday morning. Of course, I’m a sucker for those vintage sounding ‘50/’60s girl group-sounding artists. Duffy truly took ‘60s blue-eyed pop soul and satiated those yearning for a new album from an ailing Amy Winehouse. Favorite track: I’m Scared
The Felice BrothersThe Felice Brothers by The Felice Brothers
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $9.50
One of THE best albums in 2008! Sounding like classic Bob Dylan and The Band, these guys take pure Americana folk music (mixed with rock) and make it their own. It’s uncanny how much the lead singer sounds like Dylan through most of the album and how great the songwriting is! I can’t wait to see what they do with their next album! Favorite track: “Frankie’s Gun” and “Loves Me Tenderly
Flight of the ConchordsFlight of the Conchords by Flight of the Conchords
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $7.50
One of the best exports out of New Zealand (although Evermore ain’t too shabby either)! Bret McKenzie and Jermaine Clement definitely don’t hold back creatively when it comes to comic songwriting. It might not be everybody’s cup of tea, but, man, it sure should be! Favorite track: “Bowie” and “Mutha’uckas
Lost: Season 3 (Original Television Soundtrack) [2-Discs]Lost: Season 3 (Original Television Soundtrack) [2-Discs]
Buy new: $19.98 / Used from: $11.77
This was the score that I had been anticipating its release for what seemed like years! Giacchino should win several Emmys for his work on this season alone! The music was so appropriately matched to every scene that to not have this special music would definitely have robbed the show of all its magic. Favorite track: Looking Glass Half Full
Stay PositiveStay Positive by The Hold Steady
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $7.57
One of my favorite bands continues their “under-the-radar” popularity with this album. This album is pure, unadulterated rock n’ roll! I also definitely recommend “Boys and Girls in America." Favorite track: Sequestered in Memphis
Let Me Introduce My FriendsLet Me Introduce My Friends by I'm from Barcelona
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $2.86
With all of the greatness of The Flaming Lips and The Polyphonic Spree, I’m From Barcelona (a line taken from BBC’s Fawlty Towers) is a 29-person band hailing from Sweden. They also recently released their second album “Who Killed Harry Houdini?” which is the melancholy companion to this album. I can honestly listen to this album the whole way through. Favorite track: The Painter
Let Live and Let GhostsLet Live and Let Ghosts by Jukebox the Ghost
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $8.75
This trio from Washington, D.C., just might give Ben Folds a run for his money. Consisting mostly of piano rock, this band created an interesting concept album this past year with something that sounds like one long, continuous jam. If you’re looking for something quirky and different from the everyday, check this band out! Favorite track: Hold It In
JunoJuno by Original Soundtrack
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $3.36
Taking a cue from the movie soundtracks to Garden State and The Last Kiss, and with hits from the likes of Belle & Sebastian, Moldy Peaches, The Velvet Underground, Mott the Hoople, Kimya Dawson, Buddy Holly, Cat Power, and The Kinks, the Juno soundtrack just about has it all for that mix tape/CD fan! Just as quirky as the movie it accompanies. Favorite track: “Anyone Else But You” (Moldy Peaches)
LenkaLenka by Lenka
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $4.50
Another shiny rock/pop album by another young female musician, which definitely is a guilty pleasure of mine - if the music is good. And this definitely is. Sounding similar to Ingrid Michaelson and Colbie Caillat, this young Aussie singer/songwriter racks up the hits with this album. Favorite track: Knock Knock
Oracular SpectacularOracular Spectacular by MGMT
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $5.10
This is one of those albums by one of those bands I thought I’d despise, but, is it good! Invoking all kinds of sounds from Pink Floyd to Ween, The Flaming Lips to Neil Young, MGMT’s album contains songs that each sound different from the other. Even if you don’t like the bands I listed, still give this album a try. You might be pleasantly surprised. Favorite track: Kids
Made of BricksMade of Bricks by Kate Nash
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $4.18
I can’t stress this enough: I LOVE Kate Nash! My favorite female artist this year, who hails from Ireland, has made a brilliant album full of songs about crumbling relationships, unrequited love, blossoming love, and low self-esteem. Sang in a very heavy London cockney accent, Nash utilizes the slang that I’ve come to love so much to help sing some great songs. Favorite track: We Get On
One of the BoysOne of the Boys by Katy Perry
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $5.25
My guilty pleasure of ’08. Regardless of what anyone says, this is a great pop/dance rock album. As much as I despise the exploitation and cashing in on lipstick lesbians and bisexuals, Perry’s hit single “I Kissed a Girl” works. Some songs fall flat, but it’s very few. Favorite track: Self Inflicted
Pot of GoldPot of Gold by Alice Russell
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $5.96
Another British soul-singer, another talented singer with that classic soul sound that I just love! Be sure to check out Russell's soulful remake (gospel choir and all!) of Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy." Favorite track: Turn and Run
Volume OneVolume One by She & Him
Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $10.85
Actress Zooey Deschanel and musician M. Ward teamed up to form this duo, recording tracks that are heavily reminiscent of Dusty Springfield and 60’s girl groups. There are three cover songs on here, but they pale in comparison to the originals, all composed by Deschanel herself. See my review for further details. Favorite track: “Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?” and “Sweet Darlin’
Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum EndalaustMed Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust by Sigur Ros
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.50
This band from Iceland has always been one of my faves and with each album they release, they never fail to disappoint. With their newest release, they slightly altered their usual atmospheric, ambient sounds to more tight, polished pop tracks that although strip down most songs to single instruments, still never lose their luster and still retain their “wall of sound.” Favorite track: Ara Batur
LET THE RIGHT ONE IN [Soundtrack]LET THE RIGHT ONE IN [Soundtrack]
Buy new: $17.95
Composed by underrated composer Johan Söderqvist, this beautiful score is the best movie score of the year! It's difficult to find but so worth it! I can't recommend this enough. It covers the entire spectrum of genre music for every taste. Favorite track: Eli's Theme
FearlessFearless by Jazmine Sullivan
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $6.65
My favorite R&B singer this year was 21-year-old Pennsylvania native Jazmine Sullivan. Reminiscent of a young Lauryn Hill, Sullivan produced and co-wrote many hit songs before even recording her own stuff. The album is damn near flawless. With beats by Missy Elliott, “Fearless” is an album that gets me unnoticeably grooving along. Favorite track: Fear
