Pride and Prejudice (Penguin Classics)Pride and Prejudice (Penguin Classics) by Jane Austen
Buy new: $8.00 / Used from: $2.73
Jane Austen. Anything she wrote. All six novels. What more can I say?
Little Women (Unabridged Classics)Little Women (Unabridged Classics) by Louisa May Alcott
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $2.39
I've loved Louisa Mae Alcott since I was six or seven. Her books get better every time I read them
The Complete Little House Nine-Book SetThe Complete Little House Nine-Book Set by Laura Ingalls Wilder
Buy new: $36.84 / Used from: $30.55
In grade school, I had to wait to get to read these books. Now I own them!
Murder on the Orient Express (Hercule Poirot Mysteries)Murder on the Orient Express (Hercule Poirot Mysteries) by Agatha Christie
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $1.98
When I lived in Mexico City, I used to hunt more Agatha Christies every time I went to the airport or into the parts of town where English novels could be found. Great reading when you live and work in another language.
CotillionCotillion by Georgette Heyer
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $5.59
Read anything by Georgette Heyer. They are all wonderful. The language, the humor, the romance. Oh, well, skip the mysteries.
Night and DayNight and Day by Virginia Woolf
Buy new: $24.80 / Used from: $3.17
I love this book. Maybe I was afraid of Virginia Woolf for too many years. Maybe what makes reviewers say this novel is unlike her other books is why I like it. But the language, the characters, the symbols and imagery are perfect. I relate to the tension between being alone and separate and being with other people.
Their Eyes Were Watching GodTheir Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
Buy new: $10.87 / Used from: $4.45
This was the book that taught me about women's themes. Why do men try to keep us quiet?
A Distant Mirror: The Calamitous 14th CenturyA Distant Mirror: The Calamitous 14th Century by Barbara W. Tuchman
Buy new: $12.89 / Used from: $2.20
I enjoy all of Barbara Tuchman's books (except The First Salute) and used to buy them as they were published. This is my favorite. I also recommend The Proud Tower, The March of Folly, and The Guns of August.
Ursula, UnderUrsula, Under by Ingrid Hill
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $0.01
Modern fiction at its best. I personally love the idea that all our ancestors, who are unknown to us, still make us who we are. Wonderful style, great narrative devices, imagery and characters. And detailed historical and geographical setting is what it's really about.
The Time Traveler's WifeThe Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
Buy new: $8.52 / Used from: $1.97
When someone asks for my opinion, I will say they shouldn't make movies from great books. This was wonderfully conceived, detailed and constructed. The upcoming movie will have to fail at capturing so much.
