![]() | Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01 I like books about ghosts and books about rock stars. This had both. Unlike his dad, Hill keeps it straightforward; tells his story and gets out. 3 1/2 stars
![]() | A Dirty Job: A Novel by Christopher Moore
Buy new: $18.96 / Used from: $1.98 Much more comedy than horror, this is my first Christopher Moore read and I had fun with it. The tale is unique and his style refreshing. More Moore will follow. 4 stars
![]() | The Lost by Jack Ketchum
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.11 Solid, but not overly impressive, The Lost reads more like a crime novel than straight horror. Like all these here, this was a page turner, but I'm not overly keen on Ketchum yet. 3 stars
![]() | Island by Richard Laymon
Buy used from: $0.76 Now this is my cup of tea! Laymon has his own style, seems to write without inhibition, kind of like Bukowski (though without the autobiographical basis I would imagine). Island is great fun, and a slew of used Laymon books are now headed my way. 4 1/2 stars
![]() | Blood Crazy by Simon Clark
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.00 Excellent imaginative apocalyptic page turner marred only by a lengthy explanation and fairly predictable traditional climax, Blood Crazy is straightforward writing. I'm more impressed with Clark's imagination than his prose or story telling ability. 3 1/2 stars.
![]() | The Stupidest Angel: A Heartwarming Tale of Christmas Terror by Christopher Moore
Buy new: $11.51 / Used from: $8.48 Moore's strength is character development, and he's got a great cast assembled here. Stupidest Angel is a quicker read and lacks the meat of Dirty Job, but still a solidly entertaining read. 3 stars.
![]() | After Midnight by Richard Laymon
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01 Laymon is two for two in my book. Another absolute page turner from my latest fave author, After Midnight contains all the fun, violence, sex, action, and poor decision-making I've come to expect from the master. I'm just never quite sure what is going to happen next and I love that in my fiction. 4 1/2 stars.
![]() | Rumors of the Undead (30 Days of Night) (Bk. 1) by Steve Niles
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01 Read the three 30 Days of Night mass market volumes some months ago and thought I'd add them since they are genre relevant. I like these novels better than the graphic novels. The writing is somewhat uneven, but the main character is easy to empathathize with and adds a human element to this modern day vampire tale. 3 1/2 stars.
![]() | Immortal Remains: 30 Days of Night (v. 2) by Steve Niles
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01 Things really pick up here. Immmortal Remains, volume 2 is easily the best of the three published so far. This is an epic vampire tale, rivaling the best of Anne Rice and highly recommended if you're into vampire fiction or engrossing page-turning horror. 4 stars.
![]() | 30 Days of Night: Eternal Damnation: Book 3 (Bk. 3) by Steve Niles
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.55 After an exciting peak with volume 2, Eternal Damnation, the 3rd installment falls somewhat flat. The scope and shocks try to up the ante, but without the effectiveness of the previous volume. This is still a decent tale, and while best to read in order, each of the three volumes is a fairly stand alone novel. 3 stars.
![]() | Nightmare House by Douglas Clegg
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.33 I was on a roll until I hit this one. Nightmare House is a faux gothic haunted house yarn that failed to engage me. The set up was overly long and the characters flat. The included novella Purity fairs better, but not enough to save this one. I'll put off my 2nd dose of Clegg for awhile. 2 1/2 stars
![]() | Headhunter (Onyx) by Michael Slade
Buy used from: $0.01 Although associated with the horror fiction genre, Headhunter is more of a dark crime novel. There are some mildly gruesome bits, and several unsettling and tense scenes. I was impressed by the writing throughout, especially the stunning climax. It does get convoluted at times, but stick with it for a satisfying payoff. I will follow up with more Michael Slade soon. Solid 4 star effort.
![]() | The Tomb (Adversary Cycle/Repairman Jack) by F. Paul Wilson
Buy used from: $1.75 The Tomb is a ripping good adventure with a well-paced, action packed plot and a classic hero in Repairman Jack. The style is straightforward, and not particularly imaginative, but the tale is a good one and builds to a thrilling climax. A solid 3 1/2 star effort and I will probably seek out more Repairman Jack novels.
![]() | Come Out Tonight by Richard Laymon
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.85 Are diminishing returns setting in or is this a lesser Laymon? This one started to lose momentum about half-way through, then Laymon switched gears and introduced some new characters. This was rather unorthodox, but effectively set the train rolling again. I let this one eke out 3 1/2 stars.
![]() | Ghoul (Onyx) by Michael Slade
Buy used from: $0.01 The second Michael Slade novel amps up the horror, the depravity, and the grue to a new level of creepiness. The Ghoul is one of the most cold-blooded villains ever. At times, Ghoul makes Laymon books seem light-hearted in comparison. This should have been a 4 1/2 star near classic, but I thought the ending a bit weak and the epilogue unnecessary. 4 stars.
![]() | Relic (Pendergast, Book 1) by Douglas Preston
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01 Solid action adventure with good characters. I liked the setting of NY museum. Fans of The Tomb and Crichton will dig this. The pacing built up speed to a satisfying conclusion and an epilogue which sets up an intriguing sequel. Solid 3 1/2 stars.
![]() | The Pariah by Graham Masterton
Buy used from: $8.99 The Pariah is a very solid ghost story filled with some genuinely scary moments. Definitely a page turner, I plowed through this one quickly. The basic haunted town premise turns into something much bigger as we race towards the climax. Things get a bit out of hand towards the end, but a fun read throughout. 4 stars.
![]() | One Rainy Night by Richard Laymon
Buy used from: $0.45 More straight-up horror than trademark Laymon lunacy, I liked the idea of behavior modifying black rain and the pacing skipped right along, what the heck: 4 stars.
![]() | The Ignored by Bentley Little
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01 Great, original ideas from Mr. Little! Although I wasn't super impressed with the over all writing, I loved the concept. This is much more thought provoking than your typical hit 'em over the head gorey horrorfest. Some might not even get the "horror". Little might be a modern day Camus or Kafka: 4 1/2 stars.
![]() | In Silent Graves by Gary A. Braunbeck
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.50 At first I was both impressed and involved with the writing of Gary Braunbeck. Characters were well developed and the book had an emotional heft to it. As things moved from the real world to the fantastic, I kind of lost interest. The extended question and answer sessions took the remaining wind from my sails. 3 stars.
![]() | The Rising by Brian Keene
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $3.44 Nothing groundbreaking here as far as the writing goes. Characters are stereotypical and dialogue nothing flashy. Where The Rising succeeds is in pacing. The story grabs you from the onset and doesn't let go until the rather hurried finish. This is one rock solid horror ride and I'm picking up the sequel and a few more Keene offerings. 4 stars.
![]() | November Mourns by Tom Piccirilli
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $2.49 No doubt Piccirilli can write. He creates memorable characters, interesting dialogue, and fleshes out an essential American Gothic vibe. the only shortcoming here is lack of plot. Our hero is in prison when his sister dies. Following his release, he returns home to get to the bottom of her mysterious demise. That's about it. 3 1/2 stars for style and mood.
![]() | City Infernal by Edward Lee
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.75 City Infernal is a great concept and the execution is mostly effective, with just a little much of that making-it-up-as-we-go-along feel. For a potentially dark and mean project, it's really a great deal of fun, kind of like Buffy goes to hell. Should have been 4 stars, but I'm awarding 3 1/2.
![]() | In the Dark by Richard Laymon
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.15 While still very entertaining, In the Dark was not as joyously over-the-top as some of my previous Laymon experiences. The first half is relatively tame, and just when I let my guard down, wham! Laymon sucker punched me good! Couldn't get over MoG writing on Jane while she slept and her not waking up. Minor quibble aside, In the Dark merits 3 1/2 stars from me.
![]() | The House Next Door by Anne Rivers Siddons
Buy new: $10.08 / Used from: $2.98 Super solid writing and a nice spin on the dusty old haunted house tale are the attractions here. The horror could have been amped up a bit, as this is much more subtle than anything I've read lately, and I was unsatisfied with the abrupt ending. Still, I was engaged throughout and gladly award 3 1/2 stars for the effort.
![]() | The Mailman by Bentley Little
Buy used from: $43.89 Lucked out getting this cheap. The Mailman is a great villain, somewhat in the S. King tradition. Unlike King, this is pared down to straight plot, no messing around. I want to go 4, but for consistency sake should award 3 1/2 stars.
![]() | The Jigsaw Man (Leisure Fiction) by Gord Rollo
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.58 The Jigsaw Man is a rather horrifying update of Frankenstein told through first person. It's a lightning fast read, with no need to look for or ponder any subtext. I would have appreciated a bit more depth. The underwritten pulpish style didn't quite suit the horror potential here. Great concept and story, but lacking in execution: 3 stars.
![]() | Infernal Angel by Edward Lee
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.99 I liked this sequel slightly better City Infernal. The writing was more polished with more thought behind the plot. Lee must have had a great time creating this vision of hell, although the explanations interrupt the story flow at times. I go a stout 3 1/2 stars
![]() | Fluke: Or, I Know Why the Winged Whale Sings (Today Show Book Club #25) by Christopher Moore
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $1.98 I needed something a bit lighter and got it with Fluke. Moore is clever and witty. Nothing scary here, but very creative plot with memorable characters. Not quite as good as "A Dirty Job", but pretty close. 3 1/2 stars.
![]() | Vampyrrhic by Simon Clark
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01 After a slow start, the suspense really started to build and I was completely on board well past the halfway point. Unfortunately, the characters (except for Jack) didn't grow on me and they seemed to have it a bit easy. Innovative slant on traditional vampire legend and good set up warrant 3 stars.
![]() | The Conqueror Worms by Brian Keene
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.99 A grabber from start to finish, Keene really knows his way around a modern horror story. Nothing super deep here, just a fast-paced, apocalyptic horror yarn featuring giant monsters and rather believable, if somewhat stereotypical characters. 4 1/2 stars. Keene is a keeper.
![]() | The Dead Letters by Tom Piccirilli
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $0.01 It took me 50+ pages to get into this, but once in, I was hooked. This is not a horror tale, although there are strong elements of violence and madness. Piccirilli is a serious talent and some of his prose just jumps off the page. Witty, clever, taut and devastating, if not for my problem getting into the flow early, I would have awarded more than 4 stars.
![]() | Night in the Lonesome October by Richard Laymon
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01 Even though light on Laymon's usual over-the-top horrific violence, I enjoyed the premise of wandering the lonesome night and sneaking into folks' homes. Memorable characters and even some thought provoking moments add up to 4 stars.
![]() | Off Season by Jack Ketchum
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $2.20 If not for the unlikeable yuppie group of characters, this would have been higher rated. It's relatively short, but the action is well-paced and exciting, with gripping moments of true horror. I want to like Ketchum, so he gets one more chance with "Girl Next Door". 3 1/2 stars.
![]() | Mirror by Graham Masterton
Buy used from: $1.63 Mirror is one original horror story, with a surprising amount of comedy. The comedy downplayed the horror at times which might have kept this from 4 stars. Is Boofuls a darling little cherub or is he... Satan? Fun read throughout at 3 1/2 stars.
![]() | Sineater by Elizabeth Massie
Buy used from: $3.98 After 100+ pages of not very much happening, I had my doubts, but then things started to happen. The snowball of suspense started rolling, gathering steam as it went. Massie writes some good characters and has great control of her plot. The finish was very appropriate. 3 1/2 stars.
![]() | The Walking by Bentley Little
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01 Another thrilling adventure from Little, with an easy to identity with lead character. If there's anything on the down side, it's that I am coming around to the school of thought that Little starts out great builds momentum and then loses steam at the very end. The climax was fairly anti-climactic in my view. 3 1/2 stars.
![]() | Deep in the Darkness by Michael Laimo
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $2.75 After your standard opening, Deep in the Darkness subtly grabbed me and didn't let go. I kept turning page after page wanting to know what the main character would do next. I found this novel original, fascinating, and ultimately horrific. Even though I figured out part of the conclusion ahead of time, the ending still blew me away. This is the stuff: 5 stars!
![]() | CUTTHROAT by Michael Slade
Buy used from: $132.58 The 3rd Slade novel is overwritten and disjointed. Cutthroat is crammed full of historical, geographical, and scientific research detracting from the story. There is too much going on here, and while there are fascinating nuggets of information, the flow is poor and the story lost. Weak on horror and heavy on details, this is more of a leisurely read than a page turner. 2 1/2 stars.
![]() | The Cellar by Richard Laymon
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.06 I can see why this didn't skyrocket Laymon to fame and fortune. Pedophilia and demon/beast sex isn't really mainstream stuff. While the ideas are pure Laymon, his style isn't quite developed in this his first novel. Worthwhile for fans, but not where you want to start if you're new to Laymon. 3 1/2 stars.
