![]() | Hoodwinked (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $1.93 Remember those terrible, live-action movies that were made so awfully and cheaply that it's easy to imagine that the film stock they were printed on cost more than the movies themselves? They had miserable special effects, obnoxious children, misbegotten sets and music that sounded like a circus soundtrack gone horribly awry. Hoodwinked feels a lot like that.

![]() | Nanny McPhee (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $2.25 Based on the widely-read (in the U.K.) Nurse Matilda series, this family movie is proving that director Jones's follow-up to Waking Ned Devine is certainly a hit. Quite good, if I do say so myself...
![]() | Curious George (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $2.99 George's enduring charisma has turned this film into a suprise mid-range hit. However, the animation department failed spectacularly.
![]() | Doogal
Buy used from: $0.99 Has a storyline that runs somewhat parallel to The Lord of the Rings, which makes it... interesting.
![]() | Aquamarine
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $1.26 Splash for tweens! With a screenplay by Jessica (Bring It On) Bendinger!! This was pretty good, but remember: it's a movie for young girls, not surly adult men!!!
![]() | The Shaggy Dog
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $0.92 It's official: dogs are this year's penguins. It's hard to knock a family comedy with such as random cast as this, especially one that has roles for Jane Curtin, Robert Downey Jr., and Danny Glover, but one thing is for sure: this has the most unsettling poster of the year.
![]() | Ice Age - The Meltdown (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $3.11 The caveman toddler, who was the emotional core of the original Ice Age film, isn't in Ice Age: The Meltdown. His absence is noticed as with him has gone any particular attempt to mount any story at all, leaving "Meltdown" as a string of sight gags and clever conceits with prehistoric animals. It makes for mild entertainment but leaves as much of an impression as a popsicle on a park bench.
![]() | The Wild
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $2.92 I don't have children, but I'd still be hesitant to shell out big money to take my (perfect, well-behaved) family to something with such a seemingly base sense of humor. On top of that, the animation looks incredibly behind the times.
![]() | Hoot (New Line Platinum Series)
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $2.17 You're thinking, "Owls?" But don't make fun; two years ago no one would have said a documentary on penguins would have had a chance. Hoot is like a Pixar movie come to life, and I'd rather watch defiant, environmentally friendly teens than some petulant layabouts.
![]() | Over the Hedge (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $2.93 Despite losing Jim Carrey as the main voice actor (he was replaced by Willis), DreamWorks banked on director Tim Johnson to get back his magic after his last outing, Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas sank like a stone. The wise move here was bringing writer Karey Kirkpatrick (James and the Giant Peach) to co-direct.
![]() | Cars (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $7.91 GREAT! FANTASTIC! LOVED IT!
![]() | Garfield - A Tail of Two Kitties
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $1.98 Here's to another year of keeping Bill Murray's bank account solvent and Breckin Meyer gainfully employed!
![]() | Monster House (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $15.49 / Used from: $0.99 Robert Zemeckis is using the same motion-capture technology he employed for The Polar Express last year. I love the concept here, the design, and, of course, the cast.
![]() | The Ant Bully (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $1.43 With a great sense of humor and a stellar voice cast (if you care about such things, Julia Roberts voice the queen ant) should make for good film for the whole family.
![]() | Barnyard - The Original Party Animals (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $1.23 The movie's zoology is all over the place (boy cows with udders?) and its generally a weird ride in places.
![]() | How to Eat Fried Worms (New Line Platinum Series)
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $1.25 Some twenty years after the TV movie, Thomas Rockwell's coming-of-age novel gets the big-screen treatment.
![]() | Lassie (Widescreen)
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $1.93 This remake of Lassie is part of a planned reintroduction of the beloved collie. But this time? Lassie's female. And, thankfully, she's not animated or portrayed by Andy Serkis in a motion-capture leotard. Contains bit performances from Peter Dinklange, John Standing, Kelly Macdonald, and a handful of UK finery.
![]() | Open Season (Widescreen Special Edition)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $2.39 The escaped/lost animal idea seems a little played out (ahem, over the hedge), but count on Steve Bencich and Ron Friedman (Chicken Little, Brother Bear) to create a refreshing story for their extra-lively cast.
