![]() | Stagecoach
Buy used from: $7.00 This is considered the Western that redefined the genre. With "Stagecoach," John Ford made the western into a respectable genre for adults. This movie is not for everyone, but it is highly recommended for serious film buffs. For film lovers, it is an incredibly well crafted film that influenced Orson Welles, Akira Kurosawa, Sergio Leone and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

![]() | High Noon (Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $18.49 / Used from: $7.84 Low budget film that really gets psychological on the values of a just retired sheriff. Scripted in real time (or as close as you can get), I am not sure, but this could have been the first one based in real time. The Tex Ritter song is also a classic (Do not forsake me, oh my darling; it'll stick with you)

![]() | Shane
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $3.76 Has a few a flaws from classic acting, but the character development is excellent. There is a lot unsaid and a real moral struggle on both sides, the good and the bad.
|
![]() | The Searchers (Two-Disc Anniversary Edition)
Buy new: $24.49 / Used from: $3.59 This is probably the first best anti-hero movie that influenced Leone's movies and American cinema. The cinematic photography is excellent, the acting is well choreographed and the characters clearly develop. If you want a classic Wayne movie, take this one.

![]() | Unforgiven (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $8.66 / Used from: $3.98 Eastwood really learned from his teachers and this was his first real masterpiece as a director.
|
![]() | The Ox-Bow Incident
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $5.20 Excellent dialogue driven movie. There are no shoot outs to look forward to in this one, but it will challenge you intellectually and morally.
|
![]() | The Outlaw Josey Wales
Buy used from: $1.99 If you can find it, this is worth having. After a brief over the top sequence, the movie settles down and proves exceedingly well crafted and entertaining as a Western. This is more of a fast paced movie than the ones mentioned here, but as far as I've seen, it's the best fast paced western.
|
![]() | The Wild Bunch - The Original Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $4.15 Included in the AFI list, this movie was too violent for its time, but again, it deals with outlaws running out of time; a character driven movie.
|
![]() | The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
Buy used from: $3.75 I thought this role fit Wayne just fine because his character is more in tune with his personality; a tough guy but always well intentioned.
|
![]() | 3:10 to Yuma
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $1.29 I didn't consider this a great movie, but it definitely surpasses the remake. It has much more substance. There is no one wooden leg hero who runs and jumps over buildings and there is no tied up criminal that kills someone every 20 minutes; just a real man to man conversation that explores our motivations.
