2666: A Novel2666: A Novel by Roberto Bolano
Buy new: $19.80 / Used from: $7.00
One of those books you'd love to discuss with other people who had just read it. Difficult to put down, and yet horrifically bleak at its core.
The Holy Qur'an with English Translation and Commentary (English and Arabic Edition)The Holy Qur'an with English Translation and Commentary (English and Arabic Edition) by Maulana Muhammad Ali
Buy new: $19.40 / Used from: $7.68
Read a few chapters at a time between other books (as I did with the King James Bible a few years back). The introductions to each chapter helped. Glad I read it.
Enough: True Measures of Money, Business, and LifeEnough: True Measures of Money, Business, and Life by John C. Bogle
Buy new: $16.47 / Used from: $10.59
Simple but good advice (the best advice usually is pretty basic -- it's those complex rules you have to be skeptical of...)
Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4 For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech))Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4 For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech)) by Joel Scott
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $12.39
Fine as an introduction to this system. Easy to skim over most of it while still getting the basic concepts.
SpinSpin by Robert Charles Wilson
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.70
Wow, what a fun ride! I enjoyed every twist and turn this one took (down to the last images of interplanetary travel). A real page-turner, and yet as intelligent about the possibility of extra terrestrial life as Carl Sagan’s “Contact”.
U and I: A True StoryU and I: A True Story by Nicholson Baker
Buy new: $10.36 / Used from: $0.25
I’m a big Updike fan myself, so when I read about this book in one of the many memorials of Updike’s life a few months ago, I really wanted to read it. I enjoyed it, but what may be more enjoyable would be hearing what Updike himself thought of it. I wonder if he ever publicly commented on this in-depth fan letter from Baker
WatchmenWatchmen by Alan Moore
Buy new: $13.59 / Used from: $6.99
Wanted to read it before seeing the movie. Glad I did, because there's no way a movie could do justice to this. The praise it has received is completely warranted.
The Voice and Other Stories (Japanese Mystery Writers)The Voice and Other Stories (Japanese Mystery Writers) by Seicho Matsumoto
Buy used from: $26.74
Clever little stories. Nothing memorable, but enjoyable for what they are.
A Hope in the Unseen: An American Odyssey from the Inner City to the Ivy LeagueA Hope in the Unseen: An American Odyssey from the Inner City to the Ivy League by Ron Suskind
Buy new: $10.87 / Used from: $0.25
Quite inspiring. A bit of a page-turner, too. The eldest daughter of a good friend of mine is about to head to college this fall, so I've suggested it to her because in addition to many aspects of the book dealing with the struggle out of a very tough environment, there's also a lot about adjusting to that first year of college. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.
The Scarlet Letter (Penguin Classics)The Scarlet Letter (Penguin Classics) by Nathaniel Hawthorne
Buy new: $7.00 / Used from: $0.65
Ever since I was forced to read this in 11th grade, I have referred to The Scarlet Letter as the worst book I ever read. I mocked it then, and I mocked it until recently. I decided enough time had gone by to give it another chance. And I found I really enjoyed it -- I couldn't put it down. Maybe I'll have to pull the same stunt with Wuthering Heights next.
"Why Are All The Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?": A Psychologist Explains the Development of Racial Identity"Why Are All The Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?": A Psychologist Explains the Development of Racial Identity by Beverly Daniel Tatum
Buy new: $11.18 / Used from: $1.49
Broader in scope than the title might lead you to believe. Enjoyed it.
Unaccustomed Earth: Stories (Vintage Contemporaries)Unaccustomed Earth: Stories (Vintage Contemporaries) by Jhumpa Lahiri
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $3.06
Enjoyed this almost as much as her “Namesake”. Controlled, almost cool writing with such a sense of nostalgia (especially for the 1970’s) that no matter how each story ended, there was a tinge of sadness. Recommending this to everyone.
I Am LegendI Am Legend by Richard Matheson
Buy used from: $3.89
Really like all of this. Watched the Will Smith movie, then Omega Man from the 70s. Finally reading the source topped both of them. And the other short stories were lots of fun; I've seen the Karen Black adaption of the Zulu doll one.
Children of Cain: Violence and the Violent in Latin AmericaChildren of Cain: Violence and the Violent in Latin America by Tina Rosenberg
Buy new: $12.24 / Used from: $0.75
Good introduction to the various forms of violence in six different South American countries, and good research into why violence and oppression are so common there. Didn't dwell on the shock factor of the details, but did a good job at explaining how these things can become part of daily life.
Little Bee: A NovelLittle Bee: A Novel by Chris Cleave
Buy new: $16.32 / Used from: $12.00
Excellent juxtaposition of two worlds in crisis colliding. The way Cleave tells the story from the two points of view emphasizes how far apart these two worlds really are. Quite good, very disturbing.
Julian Comstock: A Story of 22nd-Century AmericaJulian Comstock: A Story of 22nd-Century America by Robert Charles Wilson
Buy new: $17.13 / Used from: $9.94
Nope. Did nothing for me. And that was a real shock after how much I truly enjoyed everything about "Spin". I just couldn't wait for this one to be over. Maybe his next will be better.
The Management Myth: Why the Experts Keep Getting it WrongThe Management Myth: Why the Experts Keep Getting it Wrong by Matthew Stewart
Buy new: $18.45 / Used from: $12.99
I felt he belabored the point that "management" is not a true science, but I think his unpleasant experience with his own consulting firm (the saga of which comprises half the book) has tainted his opinion a bit. Sure, ease up on the lionization of an MBA, but don't give up on the idea all together. That being said, I'm completely with him on the worth of a strong liberal arts education.
The Wrecking Ball: A Novel (P.S.)The Wrecking Ball: A Novel (P.S.) by Christiana Spens
Buy new: $11.92 / Used from: $0.01
Mmmm, not really impressed. Felt like "Less Than Zero" without the edge. Lots of adjectives, lots of coke, but no real reason to care. Honestly, nothing even that shocking.
The Bear Comes Home: A NovelThe Bear Comes Home: A Novel by Rafi Zabor
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $0.01
As someone who’s played an instrument or two in his life, this was an incredible description of when the physical technique and pedantic methodology of playing can mysteriously morph into something much more metaphysical and rewarding. The Bear makes a memorable jazz man, and the inclusion of real musicians in his adventures made this quite a fun read.
Ender's Game (Ender, Book 1)Ender's Game (Ender, Book 1) by Orson Scott Card
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.98
Quick read -- enjoyed it.
