The notorious, originally X-rated film 'The Devils (1971)'; it's so controversial that Warner Bros. are reluctant to release it on DVD at all! Fans are clamoring for a Director's Cut with the inclusion of the infamous 'Rape Of Christ' sequence (which was originally cut). Even before George Lucas considered digital filmmaking, British director Peter Greenaway had already experimented with HD technology--and this beautiful visual smorgasbord 'Prospero's Books (1991)', is one of them. Starring the late great John Gielgud, this film is also noted for its pioneering use of digital image manipulation, and is still only available on VHS. Ironic, eh?

Frank Zappa's mind-warping '200 Motels (1971)'; it's easy to discard this as psychedelia with all the heady visuals, but take note that this was the FIRST ever feature film shot on video (and then transferred to film). The soundtrack to this was released some years ago, probably to placate the burgeoning demand for this movie, but still no DVD has surfaced.

Fellini's 'Casanova (1976)'; now this DVD here is an import: a 2-disc, remastered version from the UK; but this needs a region 1 release in rein of Fellini's 'Satyricon (1969)' or 'Roma (1972)'. This is the usual Fellini, not as 'out there' as 'Satyricon' but non-linear nonetheless.

The biker flick from the 80's 'Rad (1986)' has a fervent cult following, but so far only fake DVD-R's have been available.

The original Phantasm, and Phantasm 3 & 4 are available on DVD. 'Phantasm II (1988)' has been the odd one out. What gives?

Luis Bunuel's 'Tristana (1970)'. Again no region 1 DVD, but a region 2 DVD has been available for a long time. As Criterion are releasing excellent versions of Bunuel's films on DVD, I guess it won't be long before they get their hands on this one.

Yes, Friedkin's overlooked 1977 thriller is available on DVD. But look again: it was released in 1998--the formative years of DVD, thus it is NOT anamorphic; plus, it's a pan & scan version. Friedkin other cult flick 'Cruising (1980)' got a nice new DVD release. Let's see a new, remastered version of this as well!

What are the studios thinking? Why on earth would you want to 'discontinue' this 1974 cult film from (gasp) Robert Altman? Crap gets released on DVD everyday, and it's not cheap to digitize a film, why not spend it on something that has artistic merit once in a while?

Wow. Directed by the great John Huston. Included in the IMDB Top 250 list. Still no proper DVD release? Just wow.

Starring Diane Keaton, 'Looking For Mr. Goodbar (1977)' is another 70's artifact that continues to suffer from VHS-only syndrome.

Dennis Hopper's 'The Last Movie (1971)'; after directing this, Hopper was barred from directing for ten years. It was considered a drug-fueled mess, and at one time Hopper asked Alejandro Jodorowsky to edit it for him as well. The studios wanted to recut it, much to the resent of Hopper who refused. A rare, cult curiosity that needs a DVD.

Jodorowsky's films were notoriously unavailable for a long time on DVD, but after some time (mainly because of the internet) his 70's cult classics like 'El Topo' & 'The Holy Mountain' were released with great transfers on DVD. But this one from 1989, 'Santa Sangre' still hasn't got a region 1 DVD release.

This is a major cult flick. 'The Decline Of Western Civilization Part II (1988)' has many memorable scenes, but continues to be unavailable for future generations on DVD. Actually, no 'Decline Of The Western Civilization' documentaries have been released on DVD (there are three parts, part 1 & 2 concerns Punk and this one is about 80's glam-rockers, and easily the best of the lot).

An obscure, bizarre post-apocalyptic flick from Louis Malle 'Black Moon (1975)'. As you can see, the imported DVD is not compatible in US players. Why not have a region 1 DVD then?
