A List Of Films That Need To Be On DVD
By an Amazon.com customer
Devils, The [VHS]Devils, The [VHS]
Buy used from: $7.18
The notorious, originally X-rated film 'The Devils (1971)'; it's so controversial that Warner Bros. are reluctant to release it on DVD at all! Fans are clamoring for a Director's Cut with the inclusion of the infamous 'Rape Of Christ' sequence (which was originally cut). Here's the online PETITION: http://www.petitiononline.com/Grandier/petition.html
Brewster Mccloud [VHS]Brewster Mccloud [VHS]
Buy used from: $14.91
An obscure gem from Robert Altman 'Brewster McCloud (1970)'; this cult oddity has never got an official DVD release by MGM. Presently this movie is only available on inferior DVD-R versions, VHS tapes, and the internet. Starring Bud Cort (Harold & Maude), this was the FIRST feature film shot inside the Houston Astrodome--where the premiere was also held.
Prospero's BooksProspero's Books
Buy used from: $5.39
Even before George Lucas considered digital filmmaking, British director Peter Greenaway had already experimented with HD technology--and this beautiful visual smorgasbord 'Prospero's Books (1991)', is one of them. Starring the late great John Gielgud, this film is also noted for its pioneering use of digital image manipulation, and is still only available on VHS. Ironic, eh?
Baby of Macon RARE UNCUT [ NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Reg.4 Import - New Zealand ]Baby of Macon RARE UNCUT [ NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Reg.4 Import - New Zealand ]
After the controversial 'Cook The Thief His Wife & Her Lover', people thought Greenaway had reached the apex of notoriety--alas, this film's content turned off any potential North American distrubutors, so there's no US VHS version either. Regardless, this film has serious artistic merit, so here's the petition for a DVD: http://www.petitiononline.com/1a2b3c4/petition.html
200 Motels [VHS]200 Motels [VHS]
Buy used from: $22.89
Frank Zappa's mind-warping '200 Motels (1971)'; it's easy to discard this as psychedelia with all the heady visuals, but take note that this was the FIRST ever feature film shot on video (and then transferred to film). The soundtrack to this was released some years ago, probably to placate the burgeoning demand for this movie, but still no DVD has surfaced.
Lisztomania [VHS]Lisztomania [VHS]
Buy used from: $11.82
Another musical/cult oddity in the rein of 200 Motels--'Lisztomania (1975)', but this time starring Roger Daltrey from The Who and directed by enfant terrible Ken Russell. Probably the only time you'd get to see Daltrey ride a huge penis. There was a Laserdisc release sometime back, but no official DVD was ever released.
Fellini's Casanova - 2 DVD Special Edition (Digitally Remastered) [PAL, Region 2, Import]Fellini's Casanova - 2 DVD Special Edition (Digitally Remastered) [PAL, Region 2, Import]
Buy used from: $99.99
Fellini's 'Casanova (1976)'; now this DVD here is an import: a 2-disc, remastered version from the UK; but this needs a region 1 release in rein of Fellini's 'Satyricon (1969)' or 'Roma (1972)'. This is the usual Fellini, not as 'out there' as 'Satyricon' but non-linear nonetheless.
Salome's Last Dance [VHS]Salome's Last Dance [VHS]
Buy used from: $13.09
What's the similarity between British filmmakers Ken Russell & Peter Greenaway? Both their best works are scarcely available on DVD! This here is another gem by Ken Russell: 'Salome's Last Dance (1988)' that's not available on DVD. Oscar Wilde arrives at a brothel where his play 'Salome' is enacted by prostitutes. Who wouldn't want to see that?
Rad [VHS]Rad [VHS]
Buy used from: $28.00
The biker flick from the 80's 'Rad (1986)' has a fervent cult following, but so far only fake DVD-R's have been available.
Ken Park (Uncut Uncensored NTSC Region Free!) [DVD] Larry ClarkKen Park (Uncut Uncensored NTSC Region Free!) [DVD] Larry Clark
Again, no official release. But this near-pornographic film from Larry Clark never found a North American distributor in the first place. There are region 2 PAL versions, but no region 1 DVD.
Phantasm II [VHS]Phantasm II [VHS]
Buy used from: $1.96
The original Phantasm, and Phantasm 3 & 4 are available on DVD. 'Phantasm II (1988)' has been the odd one out. What gives?
Celine and Julie Go Boating [VHS]Celine and Julie Go Boating [VHS]
Buy used from: $16.25
A major cult favorite: the 193 min French film 'Celine & Julie Go Boating (1974)'. Region 2 DVD? yes. Region 1 DVD? no. It's such a rare flick that even the used VHS versions are going at $45.
TristanaTristana
Buy used from: $4.84
Luis Bunuel's 'Tristana (1970)'. Again no region 1 DVD, but a region 2 DVD has been available for a long time. As Criterion are releasing excellent versions of Bunuel's films on DVD, I guess it won't be long before they get their hands on this one.
Rolling Thunder [VHS]Rolling Thunder [VHS]
Buy used from: $12.46
The 1977 action flick has built up quite a cult following over the years, and it has garnered more attention after Tarantino claimed it was one of his favorite films. But, where's the DVD?
SorcererSorcerer
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $6.58
Yes, Friedkin's overlooked 1977 thriller is available on DVD. But look again: it was released in 1998--the formative years of DVD, thus it is NOT anamorphic; plus, it's a pan & scan version. Friedkin other cult flick 'Cruising (1980)' got a nice new DVD release. Let's see a new, remastered version of this as well!
Wild At HeartWild At Heart
Buy used from: $6.79
This item has been discontinued by the manufacturer''--are you kidding me? This is a David Lynch film, and all Lynch films have a huge cult following. There's no possible excuse to 'discontinue' this title.
California SplitCalifornia Split
Buy used from: $25.95
What are the studios thinking? Why on earth would you want to 'discontinue' this 1974 cult film from (gasp) Robert Altman? Crap gets released on DVD everyday, and it's not cheap to digitize a film, why not spend it on something that has artistic merit once in a while?
The Keep [VHS]The Keep [VHS]
Buy used from: $20.95
Michael Mann's horror flick from 1983. The rumor is that director Man isn't particularly fond of it, but it has a steady cult following. Rumors of a DVD have been in the air for years, but hasn't materialized yet.
The African Queen [VHS]The African Queen [VHS]
Buy used from: $2.88
Wow. Directed by the great John Huston. Included in the IMDB Top 250 list. Still no proper DVD release? Just wow.
The Magnificent Ambersons [VHS]The Magnificent Ambersons [VHS]
Buy used from: $9.97
Directed by Orson Welles in his prime. This classic from 1942 is still not available on DVD. It's Orson Welles for crying out loud!
Looking for Mr. Goodbar [VHS]Looking for Mr. Goodbar [VHS]
Buy used from: $22.99
Starring Diane Keaton, 'Looking For Mr. Goodbar (1977)' is another 70's artifact that continues to suffer from VHS-only syndrome.
Let It Be [VHS]Let It Be [VHS]
Buy used from: $199.00
This 1970 Beatles documentary should be released on DVD for one reason alone: it contains the last time the Fab Four played together: at the rooftop concert at the Apple Building. Enigmatically, the current owners of this flick deem it as 'too controversial' to be released on DVD.
The Last Movie [VHS]The Last Movie [VHS]
Buy used from: $29.95
Dennis Hopper's 'The Last Movie (1971)'; after directing this, Hopper was barred from directing for ten years. It was considered a drug-fueled mess, and at one time Hopper asked Alejandro Jodorowsky to edit it for him as well. The studios wanted to recut it, much to the resent of Hopper who refused. A rare, cult curiosity that needs a DVD.
Housekeeping [VHS]Housekeeping [VHS]
Buy used from: $27.55
A DVD is long overdue for this darkly comic, quirky Bill Forsyth movie 'Housekeeping (1987)'; fans have been campaigning online and some even send requests to Criterion for a DVD. But as of yet there is no DVD.
Santa Sangre [VHS]Santa Sangre [VHS]
Buy used from: $7.94
Jodorowsky's films were notoriously unavailable for a long time on DVD, but after some time (mainly because of the internet) his 70's cult classics like 'El Topo' & 'The Holy Mountain' were released with great transfers on DVD. But this one from 1989, 'Santa Sangre' still hasn't got a region 1 DVD release.
Johnny Guitar [VHS]Johnny Guitar [VHS]
Buy used from: $2.75
Imports and VHS to DVD transfers abound, but this revisionist/feminist western from 1954 starring Joan Crawford is yet to get a region 1 DVD release.
The Decline of Western Civilization Part II-The Metal Years [VHS]The Decline of Western Civilization Part II-The Metal Years [VHS]
Buy used from: $44.98
This is a major cult flick. 'The Decline Of Western Civilization Part II (1988)' has many memorable scenes, but continues to be unavailable for future generations on DVD. Actually, no 'Decline Of The Western Civilization' documentaries have been released on DVD (there are three parts, part 1 & 2 concerns Punk and this one is about 80's glam-rockers, and easily the best of the lot).
Goodbye 20th Century [VHS]Goodbye 20th Century [VHS] by Aleksandar Popovski
Very, very rare Macedonian film 'Goodbye 20th Century (1988)' is a surreal flick in the rein of 'El Topo (1971)'. Very hard to believe this will get a DVD release, but one is allowed to wish.
Black Moon ( Luna nera ) [ NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Reg.4 Import - Australia ]Black Moon ( Luna nera ) [ NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Reg.4 Import - Australia ]
Buy used from: $30.99
An obscure, bizarre post-apocalyptic flick from Louis Malle 'Black Moon (1975)'. As you can see, the imported DVD is not compatible in US players. Why not have a region 1 DVD then?
Husbands [VHS]Husbands [VHS]
Buy used from: $19.99
A John Cassavetes film: 'Husbands (1970)'; with the steady output of films from indie godafther Cassavetes hitting DVD, specially via Criterion, there's no reason why this complex comedy should stay in VHS purgatory.
