My List of Book Reccommendations Part I
By an Amazon.com customer
His Dark Materials Trilogy (The Golden Compass; The Subtle Knife; The Amber Spyglass)His Dark Materials Trilogy (The Golden Compass; The Subtle Knife; The Amber Spyglass) by Philip Pullman
Buy new: $15.30 / Used from: $8.00
Despite the fact that this trilogy is sometimes referred to as “The Anti-Narnia”-no matter how you feel about the anti-religious themes, you have to respect Pullman’s remarkable storyline and writing style. While the Catholic Church and parental “watchdog” groups may be out there warning against these books I think the best thing is for people to read them and come up with their own opinions.
The Chronicles of NarniaThe Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis
Buy new: $15.83 / Used from: $0.40
When it comes to fantasy C.S. Lewis is second only to Tolkien. Narnia is a beautiful world, and Lewis’s writing style always leaves you hungry for more.. The Lion, the Witch, & the Wardrobe is the most famous of the series, but I have to say that none of the movies based on the novel do it justice. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is my favorite.
The Princess Diaries (The Princess Diaries, Vol. 1)The Princess Diaries (The Princess Diaries, Vol. 1) by Meg Cabot
Buy used from: $4.24
Admittedly, these are more girly books, but guys can read them too. :) They are meant for a young adult audience and they are hilarious. The movies are absolutely nothing like the books, and like many book-to-movie adaptations kind of suck when compared to the real thing. These are super fast reads that are sure to make you laugh.
Angus, Thongs and Full-frontal Snogging: Confessions of Georgia Nicolson (Confessions of Georgia Nicolsn)Angus, Thongs and Full-frontal Snogging: Confessions of Georgia Nicolson (Confessions of Georgia Nicolsn) by Louise Rennison
Buy used from: $0.51
The writing style is very similar to The Princess Diaries, but these books have a British twist to them. As Georgia is a little obsessive and psychotic they are laugh-out-loud funny and extremely hard to put down. With off-the-wall titles like On the Bright Side, I’m now the Girlfriend of a Sex God and Knocked out by my Nunga-Nungas, …how could these not be great books?
The Lord of the Rings (50th Anniversary Edition)The Lord of the Rings (50th Anniversary Edition) by J.R.R. Tolkien
Buy new: $53.55 / Used from: $39.73
High Fantasy at its greatest. In my opinion there is nothing comparable to Middle Earth and the LotR. The trilogy requires some patience and perseverance but once you finish it, you’ll be glad that you did. Even though they obviously had to cut out quite a bit to make the movies (even the extended editions), Peter Jackson did an excellent job.
The Complete Wreck (A Series of Unfortunate Events, Books 1-13)The Complete Wreck (A Series of Unfortunate Events, Books 1-13) by Lemony Snicket
Buy new: $94.50 / Used from: $74.29
While most of what happens in these books is terribly misfortunate and horrible and you might just be better off picking up a happy book to read, Lemony Snicket is a great author. The first few books were my favorite, as they got closer to the end, I have to admit that I liked them less. But if you’re ever looking for a darkly humorous book, pick up The Bad Beginning and you won’t be disappointed.
Dragon Sword and Wind ChildDragon Sword and Wind Child by Noriko Ogiwara
Buy new: $13.25 / Used from: $5.00
This is a great book about fate and honor and love; not to mention the great battle between the Children of Light and the Goddess of Darkness. This is a great book for anyone interested in Japanese fantasy. Ogiwara wrote two sequels to this book, but sadly they were never translated into English. With the reappearance of this one, I really hope they get around to translating the others!
Ella EnchantedElla Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine
Buy used from: $0.01
The Cinderella story has probably been retold more than any other fairy tale, but this retelling is notably awesome. Ella is smart and funny and about as far from Disney’s Cinderella as you can get. It is funny and light and makes for a very quick read.
The Time Quartet Box Set (A Wrinkle in Time, A Wind in the Door, A Swiftly Tilting Planet, Many Waters)The Time Quartet Box Set (A Wrinkle in Time, A Wind in the Door, A Swiftly Tilting Planet, Many Waters) by Madeleine L'Engle
Buy used from: $17.00
These are the first “sci-fi” books I probably ever read, even though I’m not sure they’re completely sci-fi. Even though they’re catalogued as children’s books, some of the themes and ideas in these books are interesting even to older readers. I highly recommend them.
Birth of the Firebringer (Firebringer Trilogy, V. 1.)Birth of the Firebringer (Firebringer Trilogy, V. 1.) by Meredith Ann Pierce
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.01
Though these books are not well known, I must mention them as this trilogy contains my favorite book: The Son of Summer Stars. Though the main characters are not human and that may turn some people off, the Firebringer Trilogy is an excellent work of art. I would definitely classify this trilogy as a High Fantasy, up there with LotR and Narnia.
WolfskinWolfskin by Juliet Marillier
Buy used from: $4.64
Everything I have read by this author has been excellent. The Sevenwaters Trilogy is a retelling of a Grimm’s fairy tale and she does an excellent job on it. She paints an absolutely beautiful setting and deep storyline. Wolfskin and its sequel Foxmask are beautiful books too and while they also have a Celtic theme in parts, most of Wolfskin in particular is told from the point of view of a Viking
The Last UnicornThe Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $8.67
This is one of my favorite books because the themes in it are so deep and intense. On the outside it’s about a unicorn- the last unicorn- and her quest to find her people. On a deeper level it’s about mortality, regret, and –of course- true love. There was a good cartoon made back in the 80s that follows the books *almost* exactly.
The Julie Trilogy (Julie of the Wolves)The Julie Trilogy (Julie of the Wolves) by Jean Craighead George
Buy used from: $5.95
This book, followed by its two sequels: Julie and Julie’s Wolf Pack always made me want to run away to Alaska and live like an Eskimo. Though they are children’s books they are still very sweet and interesting and worth the short time they take to read.
Hans Brinker, or The Silver SkatesHans Brinker, or The Silver Skates by Mary Mapes Dodge
Buy new: $15.25 / Used from: $3.20
This is about a poor Dutch boy named Hans and his family. It is also about his friends and there is a lot of very interesting information in it about Holland. It is a great book to curl up with on a cold snowy day.
Harry Potter Boxset Books 1-7Harry Potter Boxset Books 1-7 by J. K. Rowling
Buy new: $114.07 / Used from: $93.88
If you don’t like Harry Potter, you’re in the minority. I’m not like CRAZY about Harry or anything, but yea, I was at the midnight book release parties at Barnes & Noble, lol. My favorite out of the series is number four. My least favorite was the last book; I could have done without the endless camping trip and the epilogue. Talk about dull.
BeastBeast by Donna Jo Napoli
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.80
This story is about the Beast, from his point of view. In this version of the story he is a Persian prince who angers a fairy. This story has a lot of twists in it, but overall its extremely interesting.
The Island of the Blue DolphinsThe Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell
Buy used from: $0.01
As far as I know, this is based on a true story. A girl was actually left on this island (I think there’s some kind of military base there now) when her people were relocated, and then was found like twenty years later.. It’s a sad story, but it’s also interesting to read about how this girl survives on her own.
A Little Princess (Unabridged Classics)A Little Princess (Unabridged Classics) by Frances Hodgson Burnett
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $2.65
My favorite thing about A Little Princess is the quote about how it is easy to be a princess if one is rich, so everyone knows it, but it’s a far more special and courageous thing to be a princess when you have no riches, or something like that.
The Secret GardenThe Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
Buy used from: $2.69
I actually like A Little Princess more than I do this book, because I like Sara more than I do Mary. However, both books are very sweet and I reccommend them.
Eleanor's Story: An American Girl in Hitler's GermanyEleanor's Story: An American Girl in Hitler's Germany by Eleanor Ramrath Garner
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $2.94
This is the true story of an American girl in Hitler’s Germany. She lived in Berlin through WWII. You often find books about Holocaust survivors and such, but rarely do you get a more German perspective.
Acorna: The Unicorn GirlAcorna: The Unicorn Girl by Anne Mccaffrey
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
I would classify these books as “science fantasy”. Though they deal with fantasy elements, they do so in a very science fiction setting. I recommend them for anyone who thinks that science fiction is just for nerdy boys.
Shogun: A Novel of JapanShogun: A Novel of Japan by James Clavell
Buy used from: $7.41
This is the longest book that I have ever read (1210 pages) and also my third favorite. It takes place in the year 1600 when an English pilot is shipwrecked in Japan. This books has everything: samurai, ninjas, pirates, courtesans, and noodles with soy sauce. Very highly recommended.
The Martian Chronicles. The Martian Chronicles. by Ray BRADBURY
Buy used from: $9.63
I will admit that I used to not like this book. I thought it was boring and stupid, and the one passage “It Will Come Soft Rains…” used to scare me. But I’ve had to read it like four times for different classes and every time I read it I like it a little bit more. It deals with the human colonization of Mars, the disposal of the Martians, and then the rebirth of the “Martian”.
The Dark Tower Boxed Set (Books 1-4)The Dark Tower Boxed Set (Books 1-4) by Stephen King
Buy new: $20.13 / Used from: $16.86
These books are not just horror books, though I think parts would qualify. They are fantasy, which a little bit of action, a pinch of western, and a whole lot more thrown in. The whole series is excellent from start to finish, though I think my favorite was possibly The Waste Lands. If you’re looking for a big in-depth series, I suggest you try these out.
Little House on the PrairieLittle House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder
Buy used from: $0.01
I first read these books in the first grade, and I loved them. When we read them again in fourth grade (and visited Mansfield,MO where they were written) I liked them even better. They are a great view into pioneer life, and while meant for younger audiences, everyone can enjoy them. I think my favorite one is either Farmer Boy or On the Banks of Plum Creek.
The Princess Bride (Fox): S. Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High AdventureThe Princess Bride (Fox): S. Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure by William Goldman
Buy used from: $2.39
I don’t know if it’s just because I’m stupid or because I’m unobservant, but I suggest that you watch the movie first as to not be totally confused by the format of this book. Once you’ve seen the movie, you will enjoy this book very much, as they follow each other fairly closely and are both funny. If you’re looking for a tale of true love and high adventure, look no further.
Casino Royale (James Bond Novels)Casino Royale (James Bond Novels) by Ian Fleming
Buy new: $10.08 / Used from: $3.90
Everybody knows James Bond. Well, this is the book that started it all. If you’re a big Bond fan, I suggest you read it just so you know where it’s all coming from.
The Black StallionThe Black Stallion by Walter Farley
Buy used from: $2.90
Though meant for children, this book is really good as well. The story of Alec and the Black is awesome, and the original movie is beautiful, with very little dialogue and just a lot of pretty horse. There is a whole long Black Stallion series, and while the first 7 or so are very interesting and good, they go steadily downhill. Stay towards the beginning of the series and you’ll be happy.
On a Pale Horse (Incarnations of Immortality, Bk. 1)On a Pale Horse (Incarnations of Immortality, Bk. 1) by Piers Anthony
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
This is the first book in the Incarnations of Immortality and in my opinion the best in the series. It is part fantasy and part satire on how our society views both death and religion. It is also pretty funny, as it’s told from the point of view of the Grim Reaper. My second favorite book in the series is For Love of Evil, which is similar- only it follows the Devil around. It’s also pretty funny
The Great Gatsby (Wordsworth Classics)The Great Gatsby (Wordsworth Classics) by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Buy used from: $0.01
This is my favorite classic. Before this, I thought all classics were like Dickins’ Great Expectations and Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter. Not true. The Great Gatsby is about love and obsession, adultery, and jealousy. It’s also a quick read.
A Walk to RememberA Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks
Buy used from: $1.65
I don’t know why Sparks gets such a good living writing depressing stories and selling them to… women, lol. Though The Notebook is better well known, I personally like this book better. Either way, both are absolute tearjerkers, but are worth the read.
Wuthering Heights (Norton Critical Editions)Wuthering Heights (Norton Critical Editions) by Emily Brontë
Buy new: $11.14 / Used from: $4.19
Another excellent classic. This one is kind of a spooky twisted love story. It’s kind of sad, but at the same time you kind of feel like they all got what they deserved. Interesting read.
The Zombie Survival Guide: Complete Protection from the Living DeadThe Zombie Survival Guide: Complete Protection from the Living Dead by Max Brooks
Buy new: $8.97 / Used from: $4.99
This is on my list for one reason, and one reason only: So you can survive the next major zombie outbreak. This book prepares you for what might happen in the event of a zombie outbreak and what to do and what NOT to do. Be prepared.
World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie WarWorld War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $6.99
Also, fantasizing about what to do in a zombie war is all fun and good until you read World War Z by the same author. No longer is the thought of zombie-induced anarchy all fun and games. Instead, you start sharpening your machete and stockpiling bottled water.
Gone with the WindGone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell
Buy new: $12.96 / Used from: $7.52
This IS the Great American Novel- nothing else comes close. It shows an elegant and honorable world destroyed for lack of understanding and greed, and tells how gallantry and honor fought their last battle. Sigh It is also the story of ambitious Scarlett O’Hara- and the ever-so sexy Rhett Butler I will admit that every time I read it I start feeling a little hostile towards those damn Yankees lol
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-timeThe Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon
Buy used from: $0.21
This book is an interesting window into the mind of a boy with Ausperger’s Syndrome, and how he overcomes it to solve the mystery of why someone decided to murder the neighbor's dog.
Star Wars: From the Adventures of Luke SkywalkerStar Wars: From the Adventures of Luke Skywalker by george lucas
Buy used from: $0.01
The original Star Wars- in book form. Though the movie is better, the book is still fun to read. There are a few differences between it and the movie, so that’s interesting too. Also, you really notice the things that differ from the book to the prequel movies. A quick and fun read.
A Clockwork Orange (Essential Penguin)A Clockwork Orange (Essential Penguin) by Anthony Burgess
Buy used from: $2.08
For the first few chapters, I didn’t even like this book. But then, as I got further into it I really began to like it, and by the end I loved it Though this book requires some thought and concentration to read (the language isn’t exactly modern English) it’s well worth it. Alex is terribly violent and messed up, but at the same time you almost feel sorry for him after his “treatment”, or I did
The Epic of Gilgamesh (Penguin Epics)The Epic of Gilgamesh (Penguin Epics) by Anonymous
Buy new: $8.00 / Used from: $5.12
Gilgamesh was king; he had a great wall, and he was a little loose with the ladies. So the gods sent him a friend and together they had all kinds of adventures. But then when his friend dies, he goes on a great quest for immortality. This story is thousands of years old and still its messages are just as good today as they were back then.
