I kept thinking about Van Gogh (also about the film, Lust For Life) while watching this film. Malick is painting cinematically and his shots of the natural landscape are breathtakingly beautiful. His style is distinct and carries forward to The New World 25 yrs later.

Todd Haynes is a master of color. The amazing shots of "Woody Guthrie" running through fields at sunset and jumping a train -- and all the train shots with him for that matter made me add this film immediately to my amazon purchase list. But styling doesn't get much better than Heath Ledger and Charlotte Gainsbourg walking arm and arm in the Greenwich Village scenes.
RepriseReprise
This film is brilliant, unforgettable, and richly textured. Trier is telling a story of some in his generation and the result stays with you. There is a really great party scene with music by Le Tigre which will make you want to throw a party like they do in the film. And maybe you will.

Robert Downey Jr. is so witty and fun in this film. The Best film for girls who love adventure and spontaneity. Plus roadtripping in Italy with Bonnie Hunt and Marisa Tomei is so hilarious. The costumes are divine, lots of goddess dresses, and Anita Ekberg inspired

FUN!!! A bunch of people from all over Europe in early 20s in Barcelona sharing an apt. and their lives. Great Radiohead track. Romain Duris in one of his, if not his first, film roles. I think the director discovered him on the street in Paris.

Films like this don't come along...really ever. The casting, the locations, the story, the language. At some points, I felt like Van Sant was channeling Shakespeare. Perhaps he was. But for the modern day. It certainly captures an era and encapsulates a time all while feeling timeless.

Ahh Nancy Meyers! I didn't get this film the first time I saw it, then I swapped my room in New York for a farmhouse in Bordeaux and understood just how truthful and whimsical the film is.

This film is painterly and I'll say it: sexy. There is something very attractive about the piece as a whole and a raw honesty that you rarely see in films about what it means to be young and figuring out your way in the world.

I watch this film every few months and always notice new things I like about it: first is was the soundtrack and the performance by Alessandro Nivola. Another time it was the aerial shots of LA which happen at the beginning of the film to establish LA; and relationships between parents and kids, growing up, and finding love in the City of Angels.
