Julius, the Baby of the WorldJulius, the Baby of the World by Kevin Henkes
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.01
I'm a Kevin Henkes fan - the stories are witty and engaging, as are the pictures. Addresses the "new baby in the family" situation in a way that kids can relate to without being cheesy. Its also written on two levels (not in a crude way) which makes it fun for the parent/teacher.
Flotsam (Caldecott Medal Book)Flotsam (Caldecott Medal Book) by David Wiesner
Buy new: $11.05 / Used from: $6.99
No words in this one! The pictures tell an intriguing story, however. The intricate, rich in color, though evoking pictures will have children studying each page carefully so as to not miss anything. They love to share what they've discovered, too!
ChrysanthemumChrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.01
I love this one so much! The words are soothing somehow so it makes a great bedtime story. This story addresses teasing in a creative, tender, and positive way.
Owen (Caldecott Honor Book)Owen (Caldecott Honor Book) by Kevin Henkes
Buy new: $12.23 / Used from: $0.01
Owen is so adorable! Every time I read it aloud to kids they are always giggling and pointing at what Owen has done next. This addresses security blankets.
Chester's WayChester's Way by Kevin Henkes
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.01
This one is cute too - and Lilly and Wendell make an appearance!
I go with my family to Grandma'sI go with my family to Grandma's by Riki Levinson
I wish this could have a thumbnail so you could see the cover illustration! The main characters are five little girls from each of the burrows of NY. The text is concise and pleasingly repetitive. "I go with my family by (trolley, ferry, bike, car, or wagon) ... to Grandma's" The pictures are elaborate and are the main means of conveying the story.
A Weekend with WendellA Weekend with Wendell by Kevin Henkes
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $2.35
Another Kevin Henkes book.
Where's Our Mama?Where's Our Mama? by Diane Goode
Buy used from: $0.49
Another without a picture! So sad... The pictures are by Diane Goode, the same illustrator as "I Go with My to Grandma's." The story is about a little girl and her little brother lost in early 20th century Paris. They travel around the city with a policeman as they describe their mama to him.
June 29, 1999June 29, 1999 by David Wiesner
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
This is probably geared towards 2nd grade and up because of the amount of text. I remember being entranced by the Reading Rainbow version - what kid doesn't like extremely oversized vegetables falling from space?
Mrs. Pigs Bulk Buy (Mrs Pigs Bulk Buy A143 Paper)Mrs. Pigs Bulk Buy (Mrs Pigs Bulk Buy A143 Paper) by Mary Rayner
Buy used from: $118.06
Why don't these books have thumbnails?! They're so good! Any of Mary Rayner's pig books are great - and hilarious. This particular one is about Mrs. Pig dealing with her twelve piglets' picky eating. She is certainly creative!
Free FallFree Fall by David Wiesner
Buy used from: $12.33
Similar to David Wiesner's Flotsam, but more surreal. The pictures are engaging and calming - an excellent book for winding down before bed.
Where the Wild Things AreWhere the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak
Buy new: $9.97 / Used from: $5.73
Ah, this is probably is on every children's book list, but for a good reason! This was by far my favorite bedtime story as a little girl. Maurice Sendak's pictures are atypical but mysterious and the wild rumpus is a great opportunity for doing voices - The kids eat it up!
