Faust (Dig)Faust (Dig) by Gounod
Buy new: $25.98 / Used from: $12.95
I love this recording. Sutherland and Corelli are both outstanding, but this is Ghiaurov's show and nobody does it better. The supporting cast is also outstanding--especially Massard's Valentin. Just a warning, this is a "grand opera" interpretation (bigger, louder, better), so if you want a more "gallic" sound (whatever that means) try Rizzi.

A beautiful recording of one of my very favorite French operas.
Massenet: HérodiadeMassenet: Hérodiade

Studer and Heppner rock in this recording.

The studio romance pays off in this, probably the best outing for the dynamic duo.

Flemming and Sabbatini are outstanding.

Spectacular recording of one of my favorite Massenet operas.

Another splendid Massenet offering. I can't imagine there ever being a better recording.

A phenomenal cast for this entertaining though often overlooked Massenet gem.
Bizet: CarmenBizet: Carmen
Buy new: $50.98 / Used from: $15.40
The best Carmen CAST on disc. Baltsa & Carreras are ideal in their roles. Unfortunately, it has the stupid spoken dialogue made even worse by dubbing. Abbado's recording doesn't have as good of a cast (Berganza is so annoying), but it knits together a little better mostly because the singers speak their own dialogue and do so in the same room as the orchestra--gee what a novel idea...
Bizet - Carmen / Gheorghiu · Alagna · Capitole de Toulouse · PlassonBizet - Carmen / Gheorghiu · Alagna · Capitole de Toulouse · Plasson
Buy new: $49.98 / Used from: $23.76
Sadly, this is the best cd of a de-comiquified Carmen out there--Plasson's conducting must be an acquired taste and why Gheorghiu? Beecham is good though his cast isn't; Reiner's got Reise Stevens, but that's all; Karajan's RCA recording sounds good on paper but isn't; Callas is, well Callas; and Schipper's is just plain awful. Gimme Graves.

Great recording. Don't get suckered into buying the Sutherland recording with Corelli--it's dreadful.
Meyerbeer: L'AfricaineMeyerbeer: L'Africaine
Buy new: $26.99
One of my favorite opera DVDs out there. Verrett made this role a signature and she is very well matched to Domingo.
Delibes: Lakmé / Bonynge, Opéra de Monte-CarloDelibes: Lakmé / Bonynge, Opéra de Monte-Carlo by Léo Delibes

Bacquier rocks.

Messiaen isn't for everybody, but this is some gorgeous pretty modern music.
Saint-Saëns: Samson et Dalila / Domingo, Meier, ChungSaint-Saëns: Samson et Dalila / Domingo, Meier, Chung by Camille Saint-Saëns

Lots of people seem to think this isn't an opera. I disagree. This is the best (cd) recording available for now...
Saint-Saens - Samson et Dalila / Rudel, Domingo, Verrett, San Francisco OperaSaint-Saens - Samson et Dalila / Rudel, Domingo, Verrett, San Francisco Opera

Here's a pretty good DVD with Verrett and Domingo (hard to beat).
Offenbach - The Tales of Hoffmann / Domingo, Sutherland, Bacquier, BonyngeOffenbach - The Tales of Hoffmann / Domingo, Sutherland, Bacquier, Bonynge
Buy new: $32.99 / Used from: $20.86
Sutherland is a phenomenal Olympia, even if she is only mediocre in the other roles. The rest of the cast is outstanding although Alagna makes a better Hoffmann than Domingo. For a more complete and authoratative recording (with recitives rather than spoken dialogue) try Nagano.
Offenbach - Les Contes d'Hoffmann / Alagna, van Dam, Dessay, Vaduva, Jo, Lascarro, Dubosc, Ragon, Sénéchal, Bacquier, Lamprecht, NaganoOffenbach - Les Contes d'Hoffmann / Alagna, van Dam, Dessay, Vaduva, Jo, Lascarro, Dubosc, Ragon, Sénéchal, Bacquier, Lamprecht, Nagano
Buy new: $50.98 / Used from: $60.00
This is the best edition available. Unfortunately, despite a stellar cast, this recording lacks something in mojo--I blame Nagano. I don't like the Muse/Nicklausse here either--too bright--should'a hired Verrett--don't care how old she was at the time.
Thomas: HamletThomas: Hamlet by Joan Sutherland

I hessitate to add this because it is currently unavailable, but this is a great recording of a somewhat neglected French opera.
Charpentier: Louise (Complete)Charpentier: Louise (Complete) by Charpentier

It's back again at last! And it's cheap!
Berlioz - La damnation de Faust / von Otter · Terfel · K. Lewis · von Halem · PO · ChungBerlioz - La damnation de Faust / von Otter · Terfel · K. Lewis · von Halem · PO · Chung by Hector Berlioz
Buy used from: $40.28
It's not really an opera, but it is just so much better than the overhyped & tedious "Les Troyens" (there is something to be said for the wisdom of contemporary audiences--sometimes, not always).
Maurice Ravel: SongsMaurice Ravel: Songs

Wonderful performances by all--especially Heather Harper and Jill Gomez. Best Sheherazade ever. Curse the Sony corporation and their callous deletions!

Best "Nuits" on disc. Scheherazade, not so much.
