Beethoven's violin concerto is a lush work that combines the best of classical & romantic styles.I have recently started to explore Latvian violinist, Gidon Kremer's work. I really like Kremer's innovative cadenzas in this work, which use piano & timpani. This CD is now available on the Elatus record label (and in print as of 2008) and is the one I own. Do a general internet search for it.

Considered by many, including myself, to be the finest recordings of Mozart's violin concertos on record. Arthur Grumiaux was known for a very refined violin tone which serve these concertos very well.

I have two other, period performances of this work, one of which I will list below, but I really enjoy the sound of modern strings for these works. The use of the organ (by famous organist, Simon Preston) is unique to this interpretation and confirms Sir Neville Marriner as a master conductor of the Baroque & Classical world.

Shostakovich's piano concertos are among the most enjoyable of his works and the final movement of the the first concerto is like a having a ho-down on the Russian steppe!

Like I said, Boulez, like Dutoit, excels in conducting Ravel and this a great interpretation to along side the Dutoit/pianist Pascal Roge version of these works.

Many prefer Leonard Bernstein when it comes to Mahler, but I prefer tempi to be a little bit faster and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Solti really give some dramatic bite into these performances. All comes down to taste in the end. If you prefer a more soulful & reflective Mahler, by all means go with the Bernstein digital set on the DG record label.

My favorite version of this ballet classic. The sound is wonderful.

Gardiner performs Beethoven symphonies using the fast tempi the composer envisioned. If authentic instruments aren't your bag, try Zinman's Beethoven symphonies on the Arte Nova label or Karajan classic 1960's recordings on the DG label for a more traditional sound.

Brilliant performances by one of the Romantic era's most prolific composers. If you like lush, sensual piano concertos, you cannot go wrong here.

A bit on the expensive side,but I had to let my Ashkenazy/Previn on the Decca/London set of Rachmaninov concertos "retire" after I listened to these CDs.

This piano trio is made famous in the movie, "Barry Lyndon" nad it was recently used in the HBO series, "John Adams".

If you would like to get to know Max Bruch's other violin concetos, Salvatore Accardo & Kurt Masur are just the guys for the job.

If you had to get just one CD of cello music with orchestra, I'd would have to say this would be the one.

Perhaps this isn't Mozart or Beethoven, but this is, hands down, my favorite soundtrack of all time. It is orchestral music at its best. R.I.P Basil- you are missed.
