Andrei Rublev (Criterion Collection Spine #34)Andrei Rublev (Criterion Collection Spine #34)
Buy new: $34.49 / Used from: $16.95
(A-) Incredibly long, slow and detailed Tarkovsky epic manages to combine a genuine epic feel with a stronger human element. It runs out of steam a bit in the last act, but most of it is excellent.
Death Wish 2Death Wish 2
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $5.19
(C+) Not nearly as over the top as some of the later Death Wishes, though it's not overly plausible. Bronson is fun, though, and it's fairly watchable.
Viridiana - Criterion CollectionViridiana - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $27.49 / Used from: $16.49
(C) Surrealist Bunuel goes for a more straight up satire to fairly little effect. In mocking trad Catholicism and bourgeoise Spain, it just doesn't have an impact on a modern American, and the satire is frankly shallow. It obviously got by on shock value, and is incredibly tame by modern standards. It's never really dull, though.
AlteredAltered
Buy new: $4.99 / Used from: $1.90
(B+) A surprisingly taut and briskly-paced sci-fi horror pic with some surprisingly likable characters. Deserved a wider release.
ScalpsScalps
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $4.70
(D-) Mind-bogglingly wretched slasher flick is too talky and uneventful to have much camp value. The ridiculous gore is sometimes slightly amusing.
Through a Glass DarklyThrough a Glass Darkly
Buy used from: $33.99
(B-) Middle of the road Bergman pic isn't a thrill a minute, but is largely carried by an effectively sympathetic central performance and some intriging dialoge.
Watchmen [Theatrical Release]Watchmen [Theatrical Release]
(A) Like the comic, it is not w/o flaws, but it's filled with so much clever, amusing and surprising material that any weaknesses are completely overwhelmed. Snyder's visuals are also remarkable.
The Invisible ManThe Invisible Man
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $6.94
(B+) Better than the other Whale efforts I've seen, this is a briskly paced and sometimes funny horror pic with some great old-time fx.
Cries & Whispers - Criterion CollectionCries & Whispers - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $14.00
(D) Wretched Bergman flick goes beyond self-parody. He floods the film with death and sorrow w/o explaining or justifying any of it, making the film as shallow and manipulative as any gory horror flick. It's also incredibly boring with a tediously obvious visual style. Watch "The Seventh Seal" or "The Virgin Spring" instead.
ChokeChoke
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $1.29
(B) Long-awaited second Palahniuk adaptation is superior to the relatively weak source material. Excellent performances make the obnoxious novel characters much more entertaining. It doesn't entirely come together, but it's quite an enjoyable watch.
A Nightmare on Elm Street 4 - The Dream MasterA Nightmare on Elm Street 4 - The Dream Master
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $1.97
(C-) In my mind, all the later NoE flicks have coalesced into a single mass. Turns out this one is quite a bit better than 5, not that that is saying much. I don't really know what the film is trying to do: it's too goofy to scare anyone, but it has little real humor. The set design is sometimes cool, though.
PhantomsPhantoms
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $1.75
(C+) Goofily entertaining horror flick. Very much a b-movie throwback. Affleck's lack of charisma is on full display, though McGowan is sadly overdressed. Featuring Peter O'Toole!
The Exterminating Angel - Criterion CollectionThe Exterminating Angel - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $35.49 / Used from: $31.30
(B) As usual, I'm not much interested in Bunuel's Marxist commentary, but as a pure, surreal horror movie this is quite the bizarre, entertaining watch.
Let The Right One InLet The Right One In
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $3.75
(B) It's "The Bridge to Terabithia" with a vampire. As with most modern, critically beloved horror movies, it's 1- good but not great 2- not much of a horror movie. It's a fairly uniqe, well-acted film, and works quite well considering I'm not much for coming-of-age stuff.
Synecdoche New YorkSynecdoche New York
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $3.93
(B+) Kaufman's directorial debut is arguably even more bizarre than his screenplays, if you can imagine that. It's certainly a unique, well-crafted experience, and I suspect I'd like it either more or less on a second viewing. I couldn't say which.
Freddy's Dead - The Final NightmareFreddy's Dead - The Final Nightmare
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $2.67
(D) Yuggh, I thought 4 and 5 were bad. As with the other later entries, I have no idea what this film is trying to do. It ain't working, that's for sure.
Death Wish 3Death Wish 3
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $5.89
(C+) Death Wish teaches a bunch of old people to fight back against the gangs. It's a goofy film, of course, though it's more competently made than you might expect.
The Last House on the Left [Theatrical Release]The Last House on the Left [Theatrical Release]
(B+) The original had a few effective moments submersed in ineptitude, but this remake is sharply made and brutal. The revenge, of course, isn't as harrowing as the initial crimes, but this is still one of the better exploitation throwbacks. The last scene is stupid, though, and doesn't fit.
Death Wish 4: The CrackdownDeath Wish 4: The Crackdown
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $1.97
(C-) Series is running out of steam at this point. It lacks the old DW tone, and seems like more of a generic 80s actioner.
Candyman 3: Day of the DeadCandyman 3: Day of the Dead
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $2.03
(D-) Horrendous direct-to-DVD sequel with a spectacularly awful lead performance. Todd isn't bad, though.
The Flesh EatersThe Flesh Eaters
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $8.48
(B) Highly entertaining b-movie with some enjoyably goofy characters and a relatively novel plot.
Student BodiesStudent Bodies
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $6.97
(C) Initially fairly funny slasher spoof steadily runs out of steam over the brief runtime.
Short Cuts - Criterion CollectionShort Cuts - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $27.49 / Used from: $17.49
(B-) Typical Altman pic where a bunch of characters blather on about nothing while nothing happens. As often occurs, however, the excellent cast makes this far more interesting than it deserves to be, and it never gets dull despite the length.
In the Realms of the Unreal - The Mystery of Henry DargerIn the Realms of the Unreal - The Mystery of Henry Darger
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $11.99
(A-) Fascinating and sad documentary about Henry Darger, an eccentric recluse who spent his life composing a 15,000 pg. children's/war novel and creating hundreds of bizarre paintings. It's quite a remarkable tale, in spite of Darger's seemingly dull life.
The Most Dangerous Game - Criterion CollectionThe Most Dangerous Game - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $23.49 / Used from: $9.95
(B) A highly enjoyable and efficient adaptation of the fun short story. Has entertaining old-time performances.
Night Train MurdersNight Train Murders
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $7.17
(C) Italian-made Last House knockoff is technically adept and has a few decent scenes, but it hopelessly padded.
Blast of Silence - Criterion CollectionBlast of Silence - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $11.40
(A-) Late noir pic about a detached, methodical hitman is fantastically dark and existential with excellent location usage. Definitely an overlooked film deserving of the late attention.
Cut and RunCut and Run
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $2.91
(C+) Deodato returns to the jungle again, this time to make a rather cheesey 80s action flick. It has a sense of fun, though, and some excellent gore.
I Spit On Your Grave (Millennium Edition)I Spit On Your Grave (Millennium Edition)
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $10.99
(D+) Notorious rape-revenge flick is so lifeless and flat that I dunno how anyone can find the energy to be offended by it.
TriloquistTriloquist
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $2.94
(D+) God knows why I saw this. From the director of Leprechaun. All you should need to know. Also, the pretty, innocent-looking teen girl in this uses lots and lots of swears. Hilarious, no?
Dario Argento's Four Flies on Grey VelvetDario Argento's Four Flies on Grey Velvet
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $14.85
(C+) A bit better than "Cat O' Nine Tails," with some visual flair and rad drumming on the soundtrack, but this is still minor Argento with a mediocre story, even by giallo standards.
The House on the Edge of the ParkThe House on the Edge of the Park
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $9.39
(C+) Deodato-directed Last House knockoff is too much sexploitation for my taste, but is slickly made and probably the best I've seen from that rather unimpressive cycle.
Late BloomerLate Bloomer
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $11.22
(B-) Edgy B&W Japanese film about a dude with muscular dystrophy who goes on a killing spree. Less lurid than that sounds, though it's not the serious, psychological film some have imagined it to be.
Troll/Troll 2Troll/Troll 2
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $4.70
(D- for just Troll 2) Infamous camp flick is unlike much you've ever seen before. Has okay technical credits combined with the most inexplicable plot and acting ever. It grows old, though.
Horror Rises from the TombHorror Rises from the Tomb
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $5.75
(B-) Another fun Naschy pic that mixes old-fashioned gothic horror with 70s style gore and nudity. It's a good watch.
SlaughterSlaughter
Buy used from: $3.43
(B) Jim Brown is Slaughter! Blaxploitation action pic has a whole lotta action, and amusing performances. Very entertaining, though the purportedly hot white love interest is a tad on the old side.
The Last House in the WoodsThe Last House in the Woods
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $1.92
(C-) Italian-exploitation pic tribute is too meandering and incoherent to be much fun, and the over the top gore is kinda weak.
Broken (Unrated)Broken (Unrated)
Buy used from: $3.04
(D+) British Saw knockoff has a few effectively disgusting moments, but is mostly boring and incredibly chintzy looking.
Red SandsRed Sands
Buy new: $14.94 / Used from: $2.11
(B) Up till the lame CGI of the climax, this is a very atmospheric military-themed horror movie about a squad of soliders who run afoul of a djinn. Better than that sounds.
TimecrimesTimecrimes
Buy new: $25.49 / Used from: $8.99
(B+) Time travel thriller doesn't add much new to the genre, but is clever and well put together.
