![]() | Mahler: Symphony No. 1 - Titan / Symphony No. 10 - Adagio
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $7.95 Here is Bernstein's earlier CBS recording of the Titan symphony (no. 1). Not only is the performance better than his later DG re-make, but here, you also get the adagio from the tenth as well.
![]() | Gustav Mahler: Symphony No. 1 / Songs of a Wayfarer - Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau / Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra / Rafael Kubelik
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $6.38 A predictable recommendation, and rightly so! This is one of the essentials in any respectable collection of the Mahler symphonies. Without a doubt, this recording of the "Titan" has never been surpassed. You also get a great interpretation of the Wayfarer Songs with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.
![]() | Mahler: Symphonies No. 1 & No. 2; Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen by Bruno Walter
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $12.41 Here is a great set of CDs. Walter's interpretation of the first is good, but it simply can't compare to what he has given us in the Resurrection symphony (no. 2). Here he is leading the New York Philharmonic, chorus, and great soloists in one of the most recommendable Mahler seconds of all time. The sound is dated, but thats the last thing you will be thinking about while listening.
![]() | Mahler: Symphony No. 2 / Klemperer, Philharmonia Orchestra by Gustav Mahler
Buy used from: $15.19 This is another good recording of the second symphony. While not as great as the ones listed above and below, you can purchase this on one (mid-priced) CD, and Elizabeth Schwarzkopf is absolutely amazing. Tempi are a bit quick for my tastes (an anomaly in Klemperer recordings), but nevertheless a great CD to have.
![]() | Bernstein Century - Mahler: Symphonies no 2 & 8 (Part 1), etc...
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $10.49 Ok, I truly believe this to be one of the greatest recordings ever made-of any piece of music. Many will prefer Bernstein's later DG recording with the same orchestra, but I believe the present disc surpasses that recording in every way. The quicker tempi Bernstein uses in this earlier version are much more compelling, and it works wonders in the finale. You also get great fillers here as well.
![]() | Mahler: Symphonie No. 3 in D Minor
Buy new: $33.98 / Used from: $9.00 Mahler's third symphony is the longest symphony (of any composer) in the mainstream literature; this later Bernstein recording does it complete justice and is one of the greatest in the catalogue. His earlier CBS recording is also fantastic, but for me, this is the one to get. The tempi are perfectly chosen throughout, and the sonics are vastly superior to the CBS disc.
![]() | Mahler: Symphony No. 3
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $6.99 Andrew Litton and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra have produced two fantastic Mahler records; a white-hot performance of the second (check it out), and the one listed here. Litton and the DSO give Mahler's vast orchestral scope everything its due, and much more. The sound is ideal. This is a truly great recording.
![]() | Mahler: Symphony No.4; Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen by Gustav Mahler
Buy new: $6.98 / Used from: $5.99 I know I know, its out of print, but i just have to list it anyway. Its without a doubt the greatest recording of the fourth symphony ever. I will dispense with the descriptive adjectives, and just say that if you can ever get a copy at a reasonable price, do it! Youll understand what all the hype is about once you do.
![]() | Mahler: Symphony No. 4
Buy new: $7.98 / Used from: $6.53 This is very very good recording of the fourth symphony. Bernsteins way with the slow movement is unsurpassed (not even by Szell in the previously listed recording). The sonics may be better on his DG release, but the boy soprano on that disc doesnt quite work as well.
![]() | Mahler: Symphony No. 4 [Hybrid SACD]
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $6.77 Even if not quite as expressive as the two previously listed recordings, Reiner does a fantastic job with the forth; and this, a mid priced Hybrid CD, is a prime recommendation.
![]() | Mahler: Symphony No. 5
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $5.23 An essential recording. This was recorded in 1987 and has yet to be surpassed. The scherzo and finale are particularly outstanding. This has been recommended by almost everyone since its release; get it and find out why.
![]() | Mahler: Symphony No. 5
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $5.99 Some people live by Barbirolli's Mahler, and while I am a bit less enthusiastic, its impossible to deny the perfection he achieved with this recording. The adagietto is the greatest I have ever heard, and no less great is the finale, where Barbirolli takes a more convincing tempo than many conductors. At mid-price, theres no reason not to have this CD.
![]() | Mahler: Symphony No.5
Buy used from: $4.50 The sound is a bit dated, and Walter slows things down in the scherzo, but overall this is a worthy addition to ones collection.
![]() | Gustav Mahler: Symphony No. 5
Buy used from: $3.75 Mehta is vastly underrated as a Mahler conductor. This is one of my personal favorites; I see its out of print, but if you can pick it up at a decent price, I promise you will be duly rewarded. The adagietto is absolutely amazing.
![]() | Mahler: Symphonie No. 6; Kindertotenlieder
Buy used from: $9.89 Wow. This is a great disc. The "tragic" symphony gets a definitive performance, almost to the point of it being the only recording one would need to own (the operative word here being almost - Boulez has done wonders with this symphony as well). The slow movement can be exceptionally beautiful (as is the case here) or, in the hands of a lesser conductor, just plain weird. Dont take the chance.
![]() | Mahler: Symphonie No. 6
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $6.05 As I said before, Boulez has done great things with the Sixth. The slow movement is stunning, and the hammer blow in the finale will send chills down your spine. You need this CD.
![]() | Mahler: Symphony No. 7
Buy new: $7.98 / Used from: $6.98 Mahler's oddest symphony. It takes some getting used to, but it grows on you. By now you may think I am a knee-jerk Bernstein/Mahler advocate. Well, youd be right, and theres a damn good reason for it.
![]() | Mahler: Symphony No. 7
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $4.50 Claudio Abbado gives us another good recording of the seventh, and at budget-price too.
![]() | Mahler - Symphony No. 8 / Popp · Auger · Minton · Harper · Kollo · Shirley-Quirk · Talvela · Chicago SO · Solti by Gustav Mahler
Buy used from: $27.89 This historic recording speaks for itself. Solti's interpretation is immense. He must have been in the same Wagnerian-type mindset with this recording as he was when he recorded the Ring.
![]() | Mahler: Symphony No. 8; Kindertotenlieder
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $11.94 This is the only one of his Mahler recordings on CBS without the New York Philharmonic. The LSO fills in, and they dont miss a step. Not quite as good as the Solti recording, but nevertheless, still essential Mahler. The Kindertotenlieder is fantastic.
![]() | Gustav Mahler: Symphonie No. 9
Buy new: $33.98 / Used from: $19.99 The greatest recording of Mahler's greatest symphony.
![]() | Mahler: Symphony No. 9
Buy new: $57.99 / Used from: $14.24 This is the best of the three Bernstein recordings. If you can get this one at a decent price, then do; however, if thats not possible, get his older CBS recording on one, mid-priced CD.
![]() | Mahler: Symphony No. 9 by Gustav Mahler
Buy used from: $6.98 Another great recording. This has been a prime recommendation since it was released.
![]() | Mahler: Symphony No. 9 by Gustav Mahler
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $7.73 This is one of the all time historic recordings of the ninth. The sound is, of course, dated; but the music-making is outstanding. The latest transfer and remastering is far superior to EMI's older issue. This is another Mahler essential recording.
![]() | Mahler: Symphony No. 10 [Performing Version by Deryck Cooke]
Buy new: $7.98 / Used from: $6.90 Actually, I dont recommend the tenth beyond the adagio, which is all that Mahler completed. However, if you must, than this is a great recording of to get.
![]() | Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde / Bruno Walter by Gustav Mahler
Buy used from: $8.57 For me this surpasses Klemperer's famed recording. Ferrier's voice is outstanding, and Walter (as always) leads the Vienna Philharmonic flawlessly.
![]() | Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $6.50 Any guide-book to classical collecting will list this as one of the all time essential recordings. It is great, just not quite as great as the Walter/Ferrier recording listed above.
![]() | Great Recordings Of The Century - Janet Baker Sings Mahler / Barbirolli, et al by Sir John Barbirolli
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $7.52 Janet Baker had a perfect voice for Mahler, and the second song of the Kindertotenlieder (the basis for the famous adagietto of the fifth symphony) is one of the most haunting pieces of music I have ever heard. The rest of the CD is fantastic as well.
![]() | Mahler: The Complete Symphonies by Lili Chookasian
Buy used from: $44.99 Want to save some money? If you have yet to commence on building your Mahler collection, heres what to do: Get this box set, take the recording of the fifth symphony and throw it in the trash. Buy Bernstein's later DG recording of the fifth, and there you have it - a pretty good start on a great Mahler collection
![]() | Mahler: The Complete Symphonies & Orchestral Songs / Bernstein by Gustav Mahler
Buy new: $191.98 / Used from: $115.98 If you win the lottery, get Bernsteins later DG box set as well; alongside impeccable recordings, it also has the complete song cycles as well. However, financially, I think it would be wise to acquire these essentials in a piecemeal fashion (omitting a few along the way), rather than the whole lot at once.
